Chapter 47
Cheyenne’s POV
I was falling into a very dark place; my mind going 100 miles per hour, anxiety at an all-time high and no family here to bring me out of a panic attack. I was sitting on the floor of my room with my back to my bed rocking back and forth and my hands were shaking uncontrollably.
“Sweetie, you need to calm down. Your human counterpart family might not be here, but you still got me.” Koa softly said, back to her motherly voice. I swear she either had bipolar or multiple personality disorder sometimes.
“I don’t know if I should be more worried or if that was meant to be calming.” I said with a shaky voice.
“Look I know I’ve ‘off the rails’ as you kids call it nowadays, a couple times, but with my history with these people and now the new freedoms females have in this century, I get carried away. So much pent-up emotions for so many years can drive you crazy.” She was laughing now, actually laughing.
My breathing started to get shorter and faster. Great, I’m supposed to be the damn “Chosen One” picked by the Moon Goddess herself, and I’m stuck with a lunatic crackhead for a wolf.
“Serious time sweetie. We need to get our heartrate down before Jax comes busting threw that door! I’m sure the pack back home can hear it.” Koa said making me roll my eyes even more if that was even possible.
“How can you help me!?” I was still shaking and my stomach was starting to hurt.
“Grounding sweetie. It’s called grounding. We did this when we first woke up here. Remember?” She asked softly.
“Not really in the state of mind to be remembering that Koa. All I can think about is the FUCKIN VAMPIRES!” I shouted that last part and slammed my fist into the floor, causing the floor to actually crack. I probably would’ve been more impressed with myself if I wasn’t freaking the fuck out right now.
“First we need to get your breathing under control. Slow deep breath in the nose for 5 seconds and slowly out the mouth for 5 seconds.” Koa said softly.
I did as she said and repeated it until I felt my heartrate come back down a little bit, but I was still internally freaking out.
“Koa, how do we beat them?! I’ve never even met one let alone had to fight one.” I asked.
“Who says we have to fight them? Now that you’re breathing somewhat normal again, name 5 things out loud.” Koa pressed.
“Jax doesn’t know about them coming, so they’re not on our side! So, they have to be on the King’s side! And I see closet, bed, nightstand, lamp, and rock walls.” I said as I whipped my head around my room.
“He seemed just as shocked as we were. Trust me on that one. That kid said something about wanting their land back, so that tells me their against Seeley. Now tell me 4 things you can feel.” Koa wasn’t going to stop till I followed this through.
“You have a point, but who the fuck is Seeley?! And I feel the cold floor, my sweaty palms, the cold ass draft from under the door, and the soft blanket on my back.” I said closing my eyes and rest back against my bed.
“The King sweetie, your father. His name is Seeley Romanov. Now 3 things you can hear.” Koa’s voice still that motherly soft tone that made you homesick for your real mother’s arms.
“Romanov?! Weren’t they the Royal family from Russia that Disney made a movie about? And I hear you in my head, I hear,” I closed my eyes and focused on my wolf hearing, “I can hear people walking through the corridors, and I hear water running in the showers.” I was already feeling a little bit better at this point. The shaking had almost stopped and my lungs weren’t burning from the fast breathing anymore.
“Yes and yes, but that’s the human version. The Romanov’s faked their deaths to escape death if that makes sense. They fled up here to this mountain where they’ve been hiding ever since. Granted not all of them made it. It was mainly just the children. They had to leave bodies for someone to validate. Now 2 things you can smell sweetie. You’re doing great.” Koa pressed on.
“It does make sense actually. Good piece of info to know because now I know to make sure he’s good and dead before I walk away from him. And I smell,” I closed my eyes again and focused on my nose, inhaling deep, “I smell my food coming this way and someone’s vanilla shampoo in the shower.”
“You would go straight to the food.” Koa chuckled. “Ok last one, 1 thing you can taste.”
“What can I say, I’m a fat kid trapped in a skinny kid’s body. It’s a blessing and curse sometimes.” I shrugged my shoulders and smirked. “And I taste…I taste, oh for the love of all things holy, all I taste is the food that’s about to be in my mouth!”
Koa laughed at me and then asked, “How you feel now?”
“Actually, a lot better. Thank you Koa.” I softly smirked to myself.
“Stop worrying so much. You are not alone. You have got to remember that sweetie.” Koa said gently.
“I know I know. I just feel like everyone is looking to me for answers and I don’t…” I was cut off by a knock on my door. “It’s open.” I hollered.
Koa suddenly jumped up in my head wagging her tail 50 miles an hour. “CHICKEN!” She hollered in my head loud enough for me to actually flinch and grab my head.
“DOWN GIRL DOWN! And you make fun of me about food. Fuckernuts.” I mumbled but I swear I could see her big wolfie grin in my head.
I looked over the edge of the bed to see who had brought my dinner and I was shocked to see Jax standing there and I looked at him like he had 5 heads sprouting out of his shoulders.
“You my maid tonight?” I asked as I used the bed as a brace to stand up.
I wouldn’t admit to anyone but I was still a little sore from Kira’s and I’s fight and then the wrestling match with the King didn’t help matters. But I couldn’t show “my people” that I was in any kind of pain. I had to remain strong. ‘Just a few more days’ I kept telling myself.
“Kinda, but let’s get one thing straight right now. I am NOT wearing any maid uniforms!” Jax stated sort of sternly just jokingly at the same time.
I couldn’t help but laugh at his statement, “Aw damn it! Koa, we going to have to come up with a new fantasy now. Jax won’t play along.”
The look on Jax’s face was just priceless. It caused me to laugh even harder and fall backwards on my bed holding my stomach because my abs hurt so bad from laughing so hard.
“Holy sweet mother of baby Zeus! Make it stop, it hurts!” I continued laughing. I couldn’t help it. It was one of those moments that every time you looked back at the person, you would just start laughing all over again, and Koa pushing mental images of Jax in the sexy maid outfit in my head was not helping at all.
“Go ahead. Get it all out now. Laugh it up. I’ll just eat all your food myself then.” Jax said as he took the lid off the plate and went to grab the silverware.
“Oh hell no!” I jumped off the bed and grabbed the fork and held it up, “I will fork you!”
Now it was his turn to laugh. “Fork me? You’re talking about fantasizing about me and then say you’ll fork me? Really now?” Jax lost it and started laughing hard.
“You know what I meant…shit head.” I mumbled the last part but he still heard it.
Jax came over and sat beside me on my bed and gave me one of those brotherly side hug things. We sat and talked about my pack and the others arrival and I told him about getting the warning to them about the vampires. Once I was finished eating, I pushed the cart away so I could stand and stretch.
“Feel like a run?” I asked Jax.
“Probably not safe with the blood suckers out there. We can go to the weight room if you want though.” Jax offered.
“I guess, I just got a lot of stress to get rid of. Wanna be my punching bag?” I slapped his chest and giggled as I started walking out of my room with him behind me.
“Not preferably. I’ll stand behind it and hold it though.” Jax retorted which had me laughing again.
We made our way towards the weight room and when we got there, there were only a couple of others in there that gave us both dirty looks when we entered. I just chuckled to myself knowing what was coming for them. I started with the leg press and then the dumbbells before moving to the squat bar. Jax made sure to “spot” me everywhere I went.
I joked that I wasn’t about to break out and do the cupid shuffle or something and that he didn’t have to spot me on the leg press of all things. He just laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Just making sure you’re using proper form. Don’t need you hurting yourself before the party.” He smirked and wiggled he eyebrows at me which had me laughing too.
“Yeah, like I…” I tripped over my own foot as I was walking to get my water bottle and decided to just lay there for a second before rolling over and facing him. He was never going to let me live this down, I knew it.
“See, can’t take my eyes off of you for one second!” He joked.
“Thought you were making sure I didn’t get hurt!” I snapped back. Now he was squatted over me with the biggest grin on his face.
“Are you hurt?” He asked.
“YES! I broke a nail.” I mumbled the last part which earned a husky laugh from Jax.
“You would have to have nails first Princess.” He said standing up and offering his hand to help me up.
“It’s official. You have a death wish.” I glared at him and he just chuckled.
Jax knew I could never hurt him. In our short time together, we had gotten close. He was the closest thing to a best friend I had here. We finished up and when I was about to fall over from pushing myself to far, Jax led me back to my room. We said goodnight and he left. I grabbed a towel and a change of clothes for bed and headed for the showers.
While I was in the shower, I was thinking of the timeline and when the fight would happen. It was supposed to happen tonight, but with the vampires showing up, it put a wrench in our plans so we pushed it off. It all worked out anyways because my pack and the others were still not here. They were loading up and setting off tomorrow sometime, and I knew it was about a day and half trip. Unless Charlie had some more tricks up his sleeve to get them here sooner. I decided that I should check in with Gunner and see what their ETA was. I focused on our bond and created the connection.
“Hey babe. You ok?” Gunner’s voice sounded in his head.
Then it all hit me and tears threatened to fall. I was about to go back home to my family and to him, and to think I never wanted a mate. We haven’t even spent that much time together. I barely even know him! Get it together Cheyenne!
“Hey. Just wanted to check in.” Was all I said hoping he didn’t hear the sorrow in my voice.
“We are proceeding as normal with the exception of departing time. We are going to leave in the morning instead of tomorrow night.” He answered back. He sounded so tired but excited at the same time.
I stood there for a minute trying to fight the tears back and focused on the hot water running down my body, soothing my aching muscles.
“Babe? You still there?” He asked.
“Yeah sorry. I’m actually, well…” How do you tell your mate you’re in the shower and not tease him?
“Holy sweet mother of baby Zeus, omg I sound like you now.” Koa popped in.
“Holy hell! BABE!” Gunner was no longer tired now.
“What!?” I asked looking around the shower like he saw something that I didn’t. Just then I heard Koa snickering in the back of my mind.
“KOA! Please tell me you didn’t!” I begged and then covered my lady parts. I don’t know why I did it, the damage was done.
“You’ll thank me later.” Was all she said before she trotted off to the back of my mind.
“So um…you’re in the shower.” Gunner said matter-of-factly.
“Yep. I just got in the weight room.” I said and all I heard was a soft growl of approval. “Down boy!”
“Hey you can’t blame me.” I could see him actually shrugging his shoulders and I let out a chuckle to myself.
“So anyways, back to business. You said you get are heading out in the morning?” I asked rinsing the shampoo out of my hair for the second time.
“Y…Yeah. In the morning.” He stammered out.
I just rolled my eyes, “GUNNER! Focus!” I just got another growl in response. “You do know I’m the one that’s supposed to go into heat, not you.” I laughed.
“I’m sorry. It’s just been so long and we’re so close. I still might be hours away, but I can feel the bond stronger now than when I was home.” He sounded so heartbroken almost that I started tearing up again.
“Wait…hours away? I thought it was a day and a half trip?! They told me it was a 3-day trip with the refugees.” I asked shocked and confused.
“Security counter measures babe.” I could see him smirking again.
“I heard Charlie was good, but damn that’s genius. Ok so if you’re leaving in the morning, then when should we expect you to arrive?” I asked now washing the soap from my body and watching the suds circle the drain.
“As long as everything goes ok before nightfall. With the new threat of vampires, we don’t want to take the chance of arriving after sundown. Dad and the other Alphas want to have camp set and give the witches time to do their magic to cloak us before the vamps come crawling out of their holes.” He said sounding more…relaxed?
“Well not to throw a curve ball, but the vampire that met us on the beach, walked right into the morning sun rays. We are not sure how he did it without bursting into flames. I would let Charlie know in the morning.” I said while shutting the water off and grabbing my towel to dry off and then tied it around me.
“Yeah but how many of them can do that?” He asked.
“We don’t know. I think, to be on the safe side, just assume all of them can unless Charlie knows otherwise.” I said grabbing my lotion and squirting some in the palm of my hand before rubbing them together.
I started rubbing my legs down when I thought I felt Koa stir but didn’t pay her any attention until I heard the same growl from before.
“KOA! Damn it! He needs to be focused for the fight. Not horny! That’s just a distraction.” I snapped at her.
“Just a little motivation for him to stay alive.” If wolves could shrug, she did.
“I think I should go Gunner, before things get worse.” I said apologetically.
“Probably a good idea.” He chuckled. “I will see you soon babe.”
“See ya soon.” I answered back and then cut the connection off before Koa could humiliate me even more.
I finished up in the bathroom and headed back to my room and crawled in bed. The silk sheets feeling amazing against my skin making it so much easier to fall asleep.
