Chapter 1293
Anthea hurried to a military hospital.
As soon as the taxi stopped, Anthea, who was sitting in the back seat, had already rushed out of the building. Without waiting for the change, she made a dart for the building.
She did not even wear a coat. Upon receiving the call, she immediately lifted the quilt and ran out with the green surgical suit.
Her collar was tilted slightly at an angle. While she ran, her forehead and temples were sweating slightly, her hair wet with sweat. Just like the private hospital she worked for, it was very quiet here at the time.
Her footsteps echoed in the empty hall.
Anthea took the elevator. As soon as she got out of it, she saw Carter standing at the end of the corridor.
He leaned against the wall in a camouflage uniform, his clothes covered with some dirt, which made him look dirty and decadent.
His back was not as straight as before. Under the dim light above his head, Carter appeared to be a disconsolate statue.
Anthea's heart jolted.
Her legs felt like jelly.
Finally, she walked up to Carter. An unfamiliar voice came out of her numb lips. "Where is he?"
His shoulders drooped. Carter, in low spirits, pointed to the ward next to him and said with a hoarse voice. "He's inside... You'd better go in and have a look yourself!" Anthea's breathing became slow and heavy.
She stared at Carter, trying to find some information about Adam in his eyes, but Carter did not say anything. He just shook his head silently over and over again with a serious expression on his face. She shifted her eyes from him to the half-open ward door in front of him.
Her gaze landed on it. It seemed that she wanted to look right through the door to see what was inside.
Finally, she pushed the door open.
Her legs went weak.
The first thing she saw was the white sheet on the bed. It covered the person from toe to head. The medical equipment next to him was shining with cold light. On its screen was a simple straight line. She was a doctor, so she knew what this simple line meant.
It showed that the patient finally died after all attempts to resuscitate him failed.
Anthea was unable to think or move.
Unconsciously, she licked her lower lip, feeling cold from inside to outside.
There seemed to be gusts of piercing wind pouring into her heart, freezing her all over.
How could he...
Anthea was stunned, her eyes bloodshot.
She suddenly thought of the news that she saw in the hospital during the day. He and Carter went to rescue people in the collapsed construction site. The TV screen showed his tall and strong figure, which was gloriously radiant in her heart.
Being a military man had to face lots of dangerous situations at anytime.
In the past, sometimes, she had to separate from him when he was going on a mission. But even it was a short time, Anthea would always be very nervous for fear that he would get hurt or encounter danger. But each time, he came back with only little injuries. But this time...
Anthea walked to the bedside, stiffly reached out her hand, and lifted the white sheet.
Adam lay quietly there.
His facial features were still handsome. His nose was straight and his jaw was still defined. However, his deep-set dark eyes were closed. He was lifeless.
"Adam..." She still wanted to call him.
But he did not answer her.
Instantly, her legs went weak and she collapsed onto the ground.
The moment she made sure that the dead person was Adam, she went to pieces.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
No matter how frequently she wiped them away, there were more and more tears coming to her eyes. At first, she just wept, but gradually, she lost control and began to cry unrestrainedly.
"Ha!"
Suddenly, someone gave a short laugh.
At first, Anthea was not sure about it. She thought that she was crying so hard that she had an illusion because her brain lack of oxygen.
However, after listening carefully for a long while, she could still hear the laughter.
How could it be?
Anthea looked up with tears in her eyes and looked back with a blank face.
Carter, who had followed her in, placed a hand on the door. He laughed so hard that he could barely stand up. "Hahaha, I'm sorry, Mrs. Chin. I failed to hold back my laughter! But your expression is really... Haha!"
Anthea looked shocked and dumbfounded.
She looked at Carter, who laughed till tears came, and said, "You think Captain Chin had an accident and died, don't you? You came here without wearing a coat! Besides, you have your shoes on reversely!" "Do you really think that Captain Chin is dead? So you burst out crying with tears and snivel falling down at the same time! Boo-hoo, I am moved!"
Anthea was stunned.
She looked back at her feet first and then looked up, only to find that Adam was looking at her with his dark eyes.
There was a light smile on his thin li. Only at this time did she notice that the medical equipment did not connect to him at all!
Adam grasped her hands with his big hands.
It was not until his heat reached her that Anthea realized that she had been fooled!
Nothing bad happened to Adam.
During the day, he and Carter went to the fire bureau to do business and happened to see firefighters there going out to put out the fire, so they rushed to support them.
A place on a construction site collapsed and many workers were buried underground. They stayed there for more than half a day to deal with this emergency. Fortunately, there was no death in the end. Adam came to the hospital only to deal with the few scratches on his arm. The nurse had already treated his wounds.
Adam tightened his grip on her hands, her hands so soft. He was willing to let her go for the rest of his life.
He gazed into her eyes. 'Anthea, how could you prove that you have no feelings for me now?"
"I..." Anthea's mouth corners twitched.
She could not deny the fact.
After such a long time of moral suffering, the warmth of his hands made the deep-hidden emotions in her heart surge violently.
Adam had already sat up and grabbed her soft hands, trying to take her into his arms. "Anthea, my sweetheart, let's start over again. No one can stop us this time and we won't separate again."
He was referring to his father. He said so to assure her that he would always be with her!
Anthea, clenching her hands, made a great effort to prevent herself from jumping into his arms.
She struggled to break free and ran out of the ward, awkwardly wiping her tears.
As she ran straight out of the hospital building, the cold moonlight outside instantly covered her face that was full of tears.
Both her close friend Leonardo and Victor, a senior, had asked her if she still missed Adam. She remembered that she said she did not miss him at all.
But neither of them had ever asked her whether she loved him or not.
Perhaps, it was because everyone knew that she still loved him.
In the ward, Carter swallowed hard and uneasily turned to look at Adam. "Captain Chin, did we screw it up? I think she is in a bad mood!" After all, it was his lousy idea!
Adam made no reply.
Silently looking at the door of the ward, Adam frowned and fell into deep thought.
Anthea still had him in her heart.
There was no doubt about it.
Just now, when she thought that something had happened to him, she looked so sad. She still loved him and could not forget him, but she refused to marry him. So, why? Slowly, Adam narrowed his dark eyes.
