Chapter 2. New Girl
In 14 minutes and 7 seconds to be exact, I was in the car park of my new prestigious school in New York.
It was much harder than I thought finding a space to park.
I continued to drive around for about five more minutes before finding a spot. Just as I was about to go in, a black range Rover that came out of absolutely no where went from behind me and into the said spot I was about to go in.
Who does this person think they are. That was extremely rude!
I must say though, knowing that I was late for first period, i'm a bit comforted knowing that i'm not the only one.
I sat there frozen in my car looking at the guy who happened to steal my spot.
He casually stepped out of his car, running his fingers through his hair, like a male model. I felt my heart stop at the sight I was beholding.
Okay he was definitely not what I had expected.
He had shiny dark hair that was ruffled and he had the body a quarterback would have. He could make any girl's knees buckle if he made eye contact with them. He wore black jeans, a black v-neck t shirt that showed his perfectly toned chest and a black leather jacket. Why so much black though?
I was so preoccupied looking, or should I say gazing at him admiring his hotness that I happened to not realize he was deadpan looking at me with a bored expression plastered across his hard rock features.
I got back my senses and scowled at him before driving off. I could still feel his gaze on me as I drove pass him.
There was an open space around the bend and I parked and hurriedly got out making sure I took out the school's map out of the glove compartment before heading straight into yet another school as the new girl. I noticed that the guy who took my spot was walking ahead of me. I slowed down my pace trying to avoid running into him. He was walking so casually you would've thought that he was early for class. Doesn't he care about school?
As if hearing my thoughts, he turned around with a not so welcoming look. My heart stopped. I dared my feet to not stop as well. He furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at me from head to toe with confusion in his eyes. I felt self conscious as he did his observation. Shaking his head, he turned his attention to where he was walking.
He took the left while I froze at the entrance gazing at his back. My intention was to get through school without being noticed so I ridded him from my mind.
I had no problem finding the front office so I could retrieve my schedule and my student I.D. I pushed open the glass door to the office, only to be greeted by the fresh cool air. Closing my eyes, I inhaled deeply before walking to the counter where a middle aged woman sat with a welcoming smile.
"Hello umm. . ." I began. "My name is-" my voice broke.
She looked at me with a sweet smile and opened the nearby folder on her desk.
"Elena Maguire?" she inquired with her eyebrows raised.
Elena?
Oh right! I slapped my forehead with the palm of my hand. The lady looked at me with confusion. I was no longer Xayla Maguire. Kalina must have changed my name for safety purposes. Thanks for the heads up big sister.
Thinking back I remembered my best friend back at my old school, Shira.
I missed her so much. She was the only person who knew about my ability. Well, other than the psycho, Jason, who I happened to befriend in chemistry class, whose father who I later figured out to be a Geneticist at a Medical Facility in Florida.
I can't believe I trusted that guy with my secret. I guess remembering now, he caught me at a vulnerable moment and I just needed to vent to someone. I should've seen how evil he was behind those grey eyes of his. Well technically he wasn't evil at all. He just happened to tell his father about me, for what reason I don't know. Which later had me in a very confined position.
I was unaware of how fast I was breathing. I felt like I was going to faint.
"Miss Maguire? Are you okay?" The lady at the front desk asked me apparently worried.
I was in that dreadful room again. I closed my eyes to compose myself but that made it worse. I felt like I was there again. Trapped in that 'operating room'.
"I think she's having a panick attack!" I heard her shout to someone.
I stepped back and dropped myself in a chair and tried to control my breathing. This is not how expected to start my first day at school. "Miss Maguire are you okay?" The lady from behind the counter now standing in front of me said, holding a plastic cup filled with water.
"Yes I'm perfectly fine. Just peachy." I breathed sarcastically like I usually do when in serious situations like this. I grabbed the water from her and muttered a thank you. Drinking the water, I realized how thirsty I was.
"I'm sorry about that. I'm just worried about my first day here that's all." I lied.
"Okay i'll write a note asking the teachers not to bother you in introducing yourself to the class then if that will make you feel better." The lady told me before walking back to her desk. She came back back with a notepad scribbling something on it. The note I assume. She gave me the note with a smile. "Here you go Elena."
"Thank you....." I checked her I.D hanging from her neck for her name.
"...Miss Landon?"
"Yes that's my name, now go. You're already late for your class with Mr Mathews. " she told me sternly. The polite facade gone.
I got up immediately a bit surprised by where the lady with the toothy smile went. I gazed in her eyes and realized that she was just pretending to be stern. I guess other students took advantage of her sweet tone in the past. I smiled while gazing into her eyes. Her eyes became glazed as if they were lost somewhere but returned to normal shortly after. Her smile came back as well. I liked her better that way.
I could hear Kalina's voice in my head. Xayla, don't use your powers.
I sighed. Its not like they are aware of what I did to them. Miss Landon has no clue that I made her politeness stay permanent. No one likes a grouchy.
Okay I'll stop. I made a promise to myself that this year, I will live a normal teenage life. But if something happens and I know I can help, i'm not going to resist. Not like last time.....
"Oh, don't forget your schedule and your ID!" Miss Landon called out to me as I turned my back.
I left the office and went ahead to find room 122. I took that as an oppurtunity to admire the school. It looked like any other school with lockers on both sides of the hallway. It wasn't so hard to find the classroom but when i did a double take, i realized what subject Mr Mathews himself taught. Calculus. Oh how I love me some Calculus. Just the sound of it makes me smile with joy.
Ha! I hate calculus just like any ordinary person would. But somehow, I still managed to ace the class. Don't ask me how. I'm not a nerd of that sort, I just happen to do well in all my classes.
Thankfully, the teacher who I now hate because of the subject he teaches, obliged to what was written on the note from Miss Landon.
He however introduced me to the class himself. I stood there awkwardly under the stares of my new classmates.
Mr Mathews pointed me to my seat at the back of the class which i'm forever thankful. I walked to my seat with my head down ignoring the stares I got from my classmates. Without even looking up, I took out my book and started to doodle not paying attention to whatever the teacher was saying. I was probably ahead of these bastard anyway.
Psssst!
"Hey new girl?" A girl to my right whispered to me.
"Hey!" She whispered once more. I could sense she was the over friendly type of girl. I tried ignoring her but I guess she's also the persistent type. I slowly turned my head with an annoyed expression on my face.
"Yes." She was a typical blonde girl with blue eyes. I could tell she had a good sense of fashion.
Nice shoes. I complimented her in my mind.
"Hi i'm Chloe. You are Elena if I remember correctly." She said with a dimpled smile. Yup, definitely over friendly. I took a deep breath and gave her a small smile.
"You are correct." I sighed. I literally have no time befriending anyone, even though this Chloe girl seemed sweet. Realizing she had her hand held out for me to shake, I started to ponder whether or not to take it.
No contact. I could hear Kalina in my head already.
I looked at her outstretched hand with my eyebrows raised. Should I take her hand? It would be rude not to. Who cares if its rude Xayla. She's just a girl. A really adorable girl.
I decided to take her hand and shake it quickly.
'Okay she is definiety weird'
I let go of her hand like it was on fire and muttered a sorry to her knowing she probably felt insulted by me. I returned back to my doodling with my head held down.
I know it wouldn't hurt befriending at least one person here. It would make this year less lonely for me.
Too late for that though Xayla. You blew your one chance at being friends with a very sweet girl who obviously both of you would have a ton in common even though she thought that you were weird.
Who else doesn't think you're weird though Xayla? Oh right. Kalina and grandma. Oh! Shira also
I smile at the thought of Gran.
She's been there for me when I first found out about my ability. She already knew before I did. It all started on my 16th birthday. She was there like promised and then it happened. I went bezerk because I had no idea what was happening. It all started with a headache and my eyes felt like they were on fire.
Gran carried me into the guest room and gave me a purple liquid to drink . I had no idea what it was but I had no time to even think about it.
I drank it quickly and immediately after, the pain stopped. I opened my eyes only to see grandma with a surprised expression.
"Gran why are you looking at me like that?" I asked her slowly. She was really starting to freak me out.
"Your. . .ummm, but how?" She muttered. Knowing grandma, she never mutters. Only when something caught her off guard. She put both her hands on my shoulders and turned me around to face the mirror.
"What happened to my eyes gran?!" I cried out. My eyes weren't the usual shade of green. Now they were
