“What are you doing? Let me go.” Yvette tried to push Xavier away, but he only held her tighter. He freed one hand to gently grasp Yvette’s slender one.
“Don’t move. You might hurt our baby.” He then added, “It’s almost three months old now, right? We should go for a prenatal check–up today.”
Realizing he’d only just thought of this, Yvette frowned. “I’ve already had the check–up. The baby is healthy. And for the last time, this baby is not yours.”
Xavier seemed unfazed as he carried her upstairs.
“Xavier, put me down. I’m not going to the bedroom.” Yvette protested, digging her nails into his arm. However, he didn’t seem to feel the pain as he continued to hold her.
Yvette noticed he’d become increasingly overbearing lately. Once he had her in the bedroom, Xavier closed the door and carefully laid her on the bed.
“Be good,” he whispered.
Yvette felt exasperated. She couldn’t believe that she still couldn’t physically overpower him even when he was blind. Exhausted, she decided not to argue further. She eventually fell asleep.
Listening to her steady breathing, Xavier made sure she was deeply asleep before he quietly left the room.
Mark was waiting for him outside. When he saw Xavier he immediately opened the car door.
They drove into the most luxurious building in Sangine County, which housed the country’s top psychiatrists and state–of–the–art equipment.
Xavier lay down and continued his treatment. His memories had been becoming clearer recently.
Strangely, the clearer his memories became, the lonelier he felt. Much of his childhood memories had returned, and he could recall his past with Yvette. He remembered their wedding, how he had been tricked, and everyone’s mocking gazes and words.
When he suddenly opened his eyes, there was a cold expression on his face.
The psychiatrist, Hector Ingham, hurriedly asked, “Mr. Lane, are you alright?” He’d noticed Xavier’s erratic heartbeat and weak brainwaves earlier.
Xavier clenched his fists. His forehead was beaded with sweat. “I’m fine.”
Seeing that, Hector said, “We’ll end today’s session here.” He was concerned that Xavier might be
overwhelmed if they continued with the treatment.
Xavier didn’t push for more treatment. On the ride back, he remained silent, lost in thought. His vision was completely gone now–a development that seemed to suit certain people’s plans perfectly.
“Mr. Lane, we’ve arrived,” Mark announced.
Xavier hummed in response before stepping out of the car.
Mark watched as Xavier walked back into the house.

Inside, Yvette, who’d woken up, was helping the cook Xavier had hired, Grace Holtz, prepare dinner. Seeing Xavier return, she asked, “How’s your treatment going?”
Even though Xavier had recalled some humiliating memories related to Yvette, hearing her voice made his breath catch, as if he’d done something wrong.
He avoided her gaze and replied flatly, “The doctor says my memories won’t come back, but my physical injuries have mostly healed.”
He’d once told Yvette he’d do everything to recover his memory. But now, he was afraid to tell her that he had indeed recovered some of his memories.
“Oh.” Yvette was clearly disappointed.
Xavier stepped closer to her. “What? Do you want me to get my memory back that badly?”
“Of course. You can leave once you remember everything,” Yvette answered without hesitation.
So that was her plan? Xavier’s lips curled into a self–mocking smile.
Yvette didn’t notice the change in his demeanor. “Come on, help with the dishes. Why are you just standing there? I don’t feed freeloaders.”
Xavier’s throat tightened. Even though he didn’t want to do as Yvette told him, his legs moved on their own, carrying him toward her. He then stretched out his hands and got to work.
