NightTide: The Girl With Red Eyes

Chapter Trapped

That sleep was a cold a one, I kept hearing voices. They just kept repeating welcome home over and over again. The closest thing I have to a home was that place with Kayla and Owen, I didn’t have anything else.

I woke up, covered in bandages. I guess this isn’t unusual at this point. But I had a tube down my throat, I felt my lungs moving but I couldn’t get them to move myself. My Entire upper body was in pain, it wasn’t severe pain but it was enough to feel. I was in a wooden room. There was a window in it. It felt weird having a window in a room. This room reminded me of cabins I saw pictures of, the walls looked like logs… There was a problem though, there was another one of those noisy machines, though this one is what kept me breathing.

I tried moving my arms, wasn’t happening. I tried moving my leg but I heard a clang. There was a cuff on my ankle attached to the bed. I was trapped here, I didn’t know where I was at and I couldn’t leave this room. As much as I tried to think about what to do I kept thinking about that girl. Why did she look like me? Why was she so strong? If I survive long enough I might find out, but I don’t know what their intentions with me are. I laid there for a long time before anything happened.

The door opened and I heard bickering. “Come-on Jessica why do we have to deal with her? She was helping the bad guys?!” I recognized that voice.

The one who replied sent a chill down my spine. “I have questions that need answered. I don’t want to hear anymore complaining from you about it, I know she killed your pet but you shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Be happy she kept YOU from being killed.”

There was a very deep voice right after hers, it was surprisingly polite. “So, what do we do if she puts up a fight?”

Jessica replied. “I’ll just break her bones again.” She was so cold about that. It’s like she’s done it many times before. We may look the same but we didn’t sound the same.

The girl replied to her. “So, uh, when are you going to wash her blood off you?”

Jessica didn’t seem to care. “Whenever I get time. Do you have any idea how many tracks we had to cover to get you of there?” The other girl didn’t reply

That deep voiced man chimed in. “You may have gone a little far. I don’t think you needed to go full force, you broke all her ribs and now you’re covered in her blood, which she vomited on you. That’s quite nasty. Not to mention bad for both your health.”

She shushed him. They stood by the door for a while before they walked in. I was right on the girl, it was that same girl from before. Along with Jessica her arm and some of her face was covered in blood, I guess that was mine, and the large man that walloped on Owen. Seeing her again… I was scared of her hurting me again. The other girl snickered a bit and I noticed there was a fast beeping, they had a heart monitor on me.

Jessica just smiled at me, then she turned towards the other girl. “So, Elizabeth. I’m aware you attacked her when she killed your pet right? How come you didn’t comment on how she looked just like me?” So, her name is Elizabeth…

She backed up and started sweating. “I didn’t feel it was relevant…”

Jessica look irritated again. “Right, we’re going to have a nice talk after this.” She looked over at me and walked up to the bed. “So, can you move?” I couldn’t move my arms or really any part of my upper body, it hurt too much. I lifted my foot up and she pushed it back down. “Good, you won’t be trying to escape any time soon… when you can talk we’ll be spending quite a bit of time together, I have several questions for you as well. Oh, if you try to run; I’ll do more than just break your ribs this time.” Jessica and Elizabeth walked out and that guy stayed behind.

He sat in the chair that was next to the bed. “Well, I suppose greetings may not be appropriate given the circumstances, either way my name is Keith. I’m supposed to watch you for the time being… I guess the circumstances of our meeting was, unfortunate.” He was being nice, at least nicer than the other two. “You shouldn’t be afraid, Jessica is rough around the edges but she’s a good person. She won’t hurt you unless you give her a reason to.” After that he pulled out a book and started reading it.

I laid there in silence, at least until he would flip a page. That and the annoying machine were the only noises I was being greeted by for the next several days. It seems I heal very quickly, I guess Jessica does to, because she didn’t have anything covering the chunk I took out of her shoulder.

I was in the bed, I couldn’t move but I was able to breath on my own. She had finally washed my blood off as well. She was standing at the foot of the bed and had her arms crossed.

She was being stern but I didn’t feel threatened. “You’re names Red, right?” I nodded my head. “Ok then I want to hear in great detail how you found yourself in that place?” Why did she want to know about me?

I didn’t understand. “Why do you want to know about me?”

She glared at me. “Answer my questions.” She sounded threatening now.

What else could I do, I told her about the first time I woke up. Being covered in bandages, being threatened after. Then I told her about Elizabeth being in my room the first time I woke up without the bandages. She wrote something down when I said that. Then I told her about everything after. She wondered who the man was that let me out of the bed just like the Pathfinder did. She seemed pleased when I told her about my attempts to stop them from beating Elizabeth to death. Then it got up to now. What I didn’t tell her was the dream I had watching her kill several people.

She leaned back in her chair and smiled. “So, you don’t know anything before that point? Doesn’t matter we should be getting the blood test back soon.”

Blood tests? “What are you testing my blood for?”

She seemed to calm down a little. “I might tell you when it comes back.” Then she walked out of the room.

It was a few more days before anything happened, I could sit up my own now but it hurt so I choose not to. I would sit in the room, someone would bring me food; usually it was just a piece of bread and a water… Although Keith did bring me a cookie occasionally and that made my day.

The only reason I would consider this to be something happening was because Jessica walked in holding a bottle, she was drunk. She was barely able to stand. “Hey Red, how are you doing?” She was slurring pretty badly but I could understand her, for some reason this worried me more than just being around her sober. She wobbled there for a minute. “Wait… I shouldn’t be in here right now, see you later Red.” Then she wobbled out of the room. It was strange…
