Chapter Beginning the healing process
I changed into jeans and my old sweatshirt. When I finally felt comfortable, I sat on the bed and started staring at my new phone. I was hoping to get a call from Kanan or Martha before tomorrow. I couldn't believe that it had only been a day and I already missed them. I would probably sit like that and wait if it weren't for Beta Ari knocking on my door. I let him in, and once he entered my room, I invited him to sit down.
"I assume that you and Alpha had a fight?" he asked as soon as I closed the door behind him.
I smiled sourly at him. "How did you guess?"
"I saw him eat his lunch alone, murdering the food on the plate, and then he organized an extra training for his elite warrior squad," he smirked and narrowed his eyes at me.
"So why are you here instead of training?" I tried to ignore his interrogative gaze.
"I told Alpha that I would go and check on you. He agreed." Ari grinned cunningly.
"So I am your way of skipping training?" I chuckled.
"He was seriously concerned about you."
"I bet he was." I sighed and rolled my eyes.
Ari leaned forward in the chair and gazed at me, caringly. "Look... I know that Alpha Draven can be rough around the edges, but he is the Alpha of the biggest pack on this side of the world and the one worthy of claiming the royal title. Cut him some slack, and he might surprise you."
"Like seriously? You are worried that the big wolf will get hurt?" I shot him a meaningful gaze. "I'm sorry, Beta Ari, but I'm not going to 'cut some slack' to someone who disrespected me."
Ari sighed heavily. "Ms. Lilith-"
"Lilith," I insisted.
"Fine... Lilith. It's been a while since our Alpha took a serious interest in a woman. He spent many years leading his pack to battles. You cannot blame him for not being a romantic type," he smiled wryly.
"I don't expect him to shower me with flowers. I only wanted him to give me time. I know that you care about your Alpha's feelings, but it's been less than one day since I said goodbye to the man I love... and I don't feel the mate-bond that could change my heart in a flash." I prayed that he could at least understand me.
He looked at me sadly and nodded. I smiled faintly, slightly relieved. We sank into a heavy silence... interrupted by my stomach growl. I flushed and embarrassingly rubbed my abdomen as if trying to silence the rumbling sound. Ari chuckled.
"I will tell someone from the kitchen to bring some dinner to your room," he said, getting up from the chair.
"Thank you, Ari," I smiled shyly at him.
He nodded while smirking, then he opened the door and stopped on the threshold. "I'd better tell the kitchen to serve all meals to your room for a while. Would that make you more comfortable?" "Yes. I think it would be better..." I smiled hesitantly and asked, "I really pissed Draven off, ain't I?"
"You sure did," he snorted, "but you can only avoid him until tomorrow."
"What's tomorrow?" I swallowed nervously.
"Your first official training, eight o'clock sharp," he grinned. "Be prepared at quarter to eight. I'll take you there."
As he closed the door behind him, he left me feeling excited and anxious. From the moment my super-genes activated, I felt much more confident in my combat skills, fighting against any supernatural race. My current problem was with Draven; I had yet to learn how to handle him. At that moment, this fierce Alpha, whom I managed to infuriate, was about to run my first real training among the werewolves. I think I had every right to be hesitant about participating in it.
Less than an hour later, a lovely, plump old lady knocked on my door to bring me something to eat. She looked like a food-lover cook from a comic book. She had adorable rosy cheeks, emphasizing her large blue eyes, while her hair was almost white and wrapped up in a messy bob.
"Here you go, hon," she said as she placed a deep plate with what looked like a large portion of stew on my table.
"Thank you. I would have brought it upstairs myself... I just don't know where the kitchen is," I smiled awkwardly, feeling a little uncomfortable about forcing this old lady to serve me my meal.
"I am a strong woman, and I need to exercise as well. Don't take it away from me," she chuckled. "I've been cooking and bringing food to this brat who calls himself an Alpha nowadays since he was three, and I still do. I don't mind walking up here with another plate."
If I had a grandma, I imagined she would be exactly like that old lady, caring and filled with motherly-kind of love. The warmth in her eyes squeezed my heart, making me uncontrollably smile at her. "Dig in," she commanded.
"Yes, ma'am," I chuckled.
She sat in front of me and waited until I tasted her food. As my eyes widened at its amazing taste, she grinned, satisfied, then gave me a small acknowledging nod and walked back to the door.
"I'll tell one of the mutts to take back your plate later, and in case you'd like to have something more to eat... or gossip, the kitchen is on the ground floor, furthest to the right." She smirked goodbye and closed the door.
As I finished the plate, my anxiety vanished. I guess prepared with loving food could be an amazing cure for a lot of things. I was slowly getting used to my new surroundings. I loved the room. It emanated peace, and I needed that. Unfortunately, I wasn't too comfortable with the idea of taking a stroll around the area by myself, not until Alpha Draven would officially introduce me. I decided that it would be safer to spend the rest of my day in my room, reading online articles and enjoying my peace and quiet.
As the old lady said before, someone showed up to take my plate after eating. It was a young man, who seemed so nervous while walking inside my room, he almost shivered, and not even once looked me in the eyes. I was wondering if he would drop the plate on his way out because he even made me nervous just watching his slightly clumsy movements. I instantly thought that I would rather take away the plate myself next time someone brings me a meal. Nonetheless, seeing that young guy all awkward was strangely refreshing since while living with the vampires, I was always the most nervous one.
I lost track of time while reading the news on the markets, which I had recently found to be my best way to not dwell on my feelings. I would probably have spent most of the night in front of my laptop if it weren't for the phone ringing, which scared the hell out of me. I shrieked at the violent sound, which took me out of the world of digits and predictions. I grabbed the phone and tried to focus on the caller ID that popped up on the screen. My heart pounded when I saw "Martha" flashing brightly before my eyes.
"H-hello?" I answered nervously.
"Do you have any idea how you broke my heart by leaving with those wolves without giving me a heads up or a stupid goodbye?!" Martha snarled over the phone.
I chuckled. Her angry voice was the sweetest, most heartwarming sound I could hope for at the moment.
"Don't laugh! I cried for hours when I heard you left the Palace!" Her angry weeping curved the corners of my lisp into a foolish grin.
"You know I love you, girlfriend, right?" I said while smiling at the phone.
"Don't try to sweet-talk me! And that letter you left in your room... was awful!" A soft laugh broke through her scolding.
"I'm sorry. I just couldn't take it anymore... I had to leave," I confessed.
When my words sounded out, a silence came. It lasted a few seconds before I heard Martha's sigh.
"I know..." she stated, with her voice as serious as never before, and then she added timidly. "And I love you too."
