Chapter 1
Present-day
(Him)
“Hey Bro! Ready for the big day?“ Logan, my future beta, says entering the kitchen.
I’m in the packhouse, cooking my breakfast. Let me introduce myself, I’m Ezra the future alpha of the Blood Moon pack and with my best friend, Logan with just came back from two years of absence. We are both 19 and we graduated a year earlier to be able to do our Alpha and Beta’s training before going to university.
The good news is we have the only university for werewolves in all North America. My father is really proud of that and as we have to ensure the safety of so many werewolves from different packs we are one of the stronger too. What I like most is the fact we don't need to move to study. I'm happy to be able to stay home after I spent two years away, far away.
“Hey Bro! I don’t know why you’re so exciting. We are just going to university.”
“After two years of rough training. We are finally going to be free to live a normal university life!” He explains.
I shake my head.
“Come on, Ezra! You should be happy. Maybe we will find our mates.”
I frown: ” I already smelled her twice, it’s clear she is masking her scent because she doesn’t want me to find her.”
“Sorry! Wrong topic. Maybe she has a good reason to hide.”
“I don’t see what reason she could have. I’m a nice man and I never was a player!” I say annoyed.
“Maybe it’s time for you to find another mate. If she’s avoiding you then she doesn’t deserve you.” Mariana, Logan’s sister says entering the kitchen.
She is 17 and a half. With Logan, they have exactly 2 years of age gape and she will start university with us. They are really close and I envy their relationship. I have a little brother, Elliot, but he's 5. I love him so much but we didn't grow together like Logan and Mariana. Back to her, I don't know what happened while we're in the training camp but she is not as carefree as she used to be. I know it pained Logan because they are closed still she doesn't want to tell what's wrong.
“My father told me the same thing!” I mutter.
“Well, the university is the best way to find a chosen mate then.” Logan adds.
“Maybe...” I reply.
The thing is I don’t want another mate. I want the one who is destined for me. I wish I know what's wrong with me for her to stay hidden. Why does not she want me to find her? And why if she doesn’t want me, she is not rejecting me?
“Well, it will also be the occasion to get closer with Asher,” I say and that made Mari scrolls.
“What’s wrong?” Logan asks her.
“Good luck with that, with Lana they are inseparable!” She replies.
“Is she his mate?” Logan asks, curious.
“No! But how his mate can accept him when he is always with another girl.” She scoffs.
“He is my future Gamma. He will be close to my Luna and she will be one of his priorities so his mate is better to accept that.” I explain.
“He is right. I’m sure he is so close to Lana because of his instincts as a Gamma. We all know she had a rough start.” Logan adds.
“Well, I don’t want that for my mate.” She comments.
Why is she saying that? Asher is not her mate, we would have known.
“Do you have something to tell us?” Logan asks her, suspicious.
“NO! Just, it’s even worst than before you left.”
“I still can’t believe he refused to come with us as your future Gamma.” He says looking at me.
“I know and I don’t understand why his parents and mine agreed.” I reply.
“Yeah... I would like to know too.” He says nodding.
"Anyway, this will be my chance to see if I still want him as my Gamma or if I have to find a new one." I say pensively.
"You should someone else." Mari comments.
"Did he hurt you?" Logan asks her.
"No. It's just that his future position of Gamma should be is a priority, not some weirdo that cannot even shift." She replies.
Lana is the girl that Mari is talking about. She lost her parents when she was 5, they did in front of her. 5 is s big step for us, werewolves, as it’s when we are able to connect with our wolves for the first time. We can’t shift before our 16 but still, we are meeting our wolf and acquiring our ability at 5. Lana with the traumatic experience she added lost her connection with her wolf and my parents hoped she would shift at 16 (it had already happened with similar cases) but she didn’t.
Lana is kind of... annoying. At least for me. Not because she can't shift, it doesn't matter for me. She is still one of my pack members and she deserves acceptance and respect like anyone else. No, what is annoying me is the fact she doesn't like me and I did nothing to deserve that! That and the fact she stole on of my best friend aka Asher. Since they became friends, Asher grows apart for me and Logan. It's pained me and my wolf. It's still paining me at the point I'm asking myself if I should choose another Gamma. I will see how goes this university year, this is a test for him even if he doesn't know.
"I really hope he will make the right choice. I miss him." My wolf sighs in my head.
"I hope too, buddy! I don't want someone else as our Gamma." I reply to him.
Suddenly, Logan slaps my left shoulders bringing me back to reality.
"Stop dreaming princess or we are going to be late!" He tells me.
"This is not a way to speak to you alpha!"
"Future Alpha! Not alpha yet... So I have to enjoy that until it lasts." He smirks and I shake my head.
"You're lucky, I'm in a good mood!" I reply.
" Mari are we driving you?" He asks his sister.
"Sure! Never I would have imagined we will be in the same class. I graduated, and you... Just retarded you." She teases him making me laugh.
"Hey! I was in a training camp! I graduated a year earlier too so I'm as smart as you."
"Come on we all know they went easy on you as you are our future Beta. Everybody knows I'm the one with the brain." Mari sasses.
"Bro? Any support?" Logan asks looking at me.
I shrug my shoulders in surrender and just say: "Let's go or we are going to be late for our first day."
