Chapter 161
Avery’s pov
Xade power rippled under me as his massive beast race through the trees, following closely behind Xaden whose wolf was just as big but the fur was a tad bit lighter. I held his fur tighter, sinking my upper body closer to him as I try to not fall off his huge beast.
Rustling leaves, the sound of distant animals around…the sound of the whistling wind. All was normal, yet I couldn’t help but notice some movements amongst the bushes in my peripheral vision.
It could be other animals, but the figures were as tall as humans and cloaked in darkness. I looked back, spotting Kaylee just a couple of inches behind. Her coppery fur glistened red under the streaks of sunlight.
Even though she was smaller than the boys, her eyes were laser focused around us, scanning the area sharply. I looked back forward, swallowing. Something about here seems eerie: It feels as if Xade sensed it too because I felt his beast muscles grow tense under me.
The unease grew and the air began to crackle with tension. The sounds, rustling and twigs snapping sound louder, closer. Suddenly a sharp yipping sound comes from behind and I look back quickly.
It was Kaylee.
My heart leaps into my throat. Was she warning us of something? Did she see something?
Xaden’s pace quickened and Xade responds swiftly, increasing his speed which leads me to clutch his fur tighter, my heart racing. My breathing gets stuck in my throat as I could sense the change in the air.
It was clear something was amiss as I had thought.
I snap my eyes around, darting them around the area quickly. The figures were on the trees, covered by the thick branches but I can spot them if I look closely. ” They’re in the trees,” I lowered my head, hoping Xade would catch my words without alerting whoever or whatever was around.
His ears twitch, giving me hope that he heard. It seems he did because his pace quickened and so did the others. Kaylee was holding her own just behind us, a low growl rumbling under her breath as warning.
It feels like the forest was closing around us and my fear spiked, stinking the air just as I felt a sharp gust of wind brush close to my left ear and then I heard it, a loud snap as that gust of wind turns out to be a huge arrow, splitting right between a thick branch up ahead.
My heart leaps in my throat when another shoots right pass my shoulder, nearly piercing through Xade. My knuckles turn white as I clutch his fur harder. Xade growled loud and harsh, his warning shaking the already tense air around us.
My breathing haste as I try to not let the terror numb me since I had to be on high alert too.
Another sharp gust of wind right beside my nose made me gasp, my fingers turning shaky as Xade and the rest picked up their pace. Xaden lets out a bark, turning to the left and making Xade follow behind him.
However, the further we dig into the forest the dark shadows become more visible until up ahead a figure clothed in black stands in our path, in his or her hand is a a bow and arrow, aiming right for Xaden.
Panic surges within me as I watch the figure clothed in black pull back the drawstring to aim. ” Watch out!” I yelped just as the figure releases and the arrow comes zapping through the air like a whipping wind.
Thankfully Xaden moves just in time, but the arrow moves too close to me. I wince when I felt a bit of the stabbing pain on my ear and knew it had scrapped me.
Xade’s beast snarls, his beast moving so quickly he ends up passing Xaden, aiming right for that figure clothed in black. However, before he could reach the figure a huge beast comes from the right and in a swift blur tears through the figure with no remorse. Blood smears on the forest floor in seconds.
It’s that man from Xade’s place….the man named Henry. His wolf had traumatized me enough so forgetting him was impossible.
