Chapter 159
Avery’s pov
I knew things would not be as easy as I had hoped they’d be. Nerves bundle in my stomach, turning into painful cramps. I held my stomach, hoping that all this stress was not harming our baby.
Fucking hell,” Xaden snarls just as frustrated and angry. “We’re not dealing with just any hunter,”
Xade slowed down and his dad who drove behind him overtook him to now be at the front. Xade’s jaw clenches and he snarls under his breath, his eyes hazing over. Dad says I should turn back around and find another way out.”
Xaden looks behind them, looking frustrated. ” We can make a quick round….but I think there are probably police on every corner. Our best bet would be to not go in the open.”
Xade glances at his brother through the rearview mirror, his brows joining into a furrow. ” What do you have in mind?”
Xaden winces. “It’s risky but better since we’ll be on our own turf. We leave the city and use the woods. We go home in our wolf forms.”
Xade’s grip hardens on the steering wheel, his eyes flickering with
indecision, the weight of it heavy on his shoulders causing them to stiffen to hold up the weight.
“It’s risky since the hunters can be there too. But you’re right, we’re on our turf and we’re stronger in our werewolf form than human. it’s our best shot to get V home and safe,” Xade utters tightly and looks at me as if to see if I disagree or not.
Fear is clawing at my sides but I know I could trust him with my life and knew he’d protect me with his life. So I nod. “We’ve faced worse,” I admit, I almost died last night. “If this is our best shot at getting out of here, let’s do it.”
Xade’s eyes soften and he nods, reassuring me with his eyes that he’d protect me. He didn’t have to remind me, I already knew.
Xade starts to turn the car in the street and barrels down the main road. We move from winding backstreets and halfway through Xade and Xaden switches to make it safer. Now with me in the backseat and Kaylee at front, we continue to move from street to street hoping to escape the chaos behind us.
The tension in the car was heavy and thick, everyone on edge and making sure to be on high alert. Xadeon and Eloise stayed back, hoping to not make things too obvious. They promise to meet us at home and told Xade and Xaden to keep them updated.
The further we drove, the more we were disappearing from the city until those huge buildings gave way to thick trees on either side of the road. Xaden drove further, turning into a narrow trail that led to the forest.
“It’s too easy,” Xade suddenly uttered, his eyes everywhere, his body tense.
His words made me stiffen and look around, trying to spot anything that wasn’t deemed safe. Xaden darts his eyes to Xade’s through the rearview and nods in agreement. “Stay sharp and alert, we must be ready for anything.”
We continued down the path, the trees now covering us until it seem to look later than it actually was. Xaden stops the vehicle. ” We shift here and continue on foot,” Xaden urged, unbuckling himself and opening the door.
Xade rests his hand on my thigh. “Wait until I tell you it’s safe to come out,” he said protectively, opening his side of the vehicle. I nod, nervously biting my lower lip. He stepped out of the car, his nose in the air and sniffs.
He’s tense but a little more relaxed when he motions for me to come to him. Fear is gnawing at my sides but I move to him, my knees weak as I stand on the ground.
“I’m going to shift and you’re going to crawl on top of me and hold my fur as reigns,” he instructed, making my heart slam against my chest as it finally clicks that I would be seeing Xade’s beast in a few for the very first time.
A shiver races down my spine at the thought.
Xade notices and steps toward me, cupping my cheek as he stares into my eyes. “I won’t bite….” he tilts his head and a small grin tugs at the corners of his mouth. “Unless you want me to.”
