"Your resignation is rejected," Miles said firmly, his tone carrying the authority of someone who wasn't used to being challenged.
I knew he had the power to do it. Even if he technically didn't, he could always get Ethan to step in and override Logan's decisions. But I didn't want any of that.
To discourage him, I replied calmly, "Mr. Logan already approved it."
After all, Logan was the real head of Mercer Corporation. Miles, regardless of his influence, wasn't.
There was silence on the other end of the line. Then, after a few seconds, Miles asked, "Where are
you?"
I hesitated. Other than Nora and Ashton, no one knew where I had moved. But I wasn't naive; I couldn't assume Miles wouldn't eventually find out.
This was the same man who had remembered the old phone I kept hidden, the same man who had feelings for me that he barely concealed. If he wanted to, he would figure it out.
Still, I wasn't ready to tell him. "Miles, the amusement park was my labor of love for two years. I trust you to see it through to completion."
"Elaine..."
"Miles," I interrupted him gently. "Let's stop talking about this."
Without waiting for a response, I ended the call.
I glanced at the bubbling pot of potato soup on the stove. The smell wafted through the kitchen, warm and comforting.
With no other ingredients on hand, I settled for a simple meal of soup, drinking it slowly as I opened my y laptop to browse for jobs.
Even though I was no longer officially part of the amusement park project, I couldn't let it fail. It was my father's dream, and by extension, it had become mine. I had agreed to Ashton's request to see it. through, but now, I would do so as an unpaid consultant-someone working in the shadows
It didn't matter to me anymore. As long as the project was completed perfectly, I would be satisfied.
Later that evening, I decided to head out to run some errands. As I stepped into the hallway, I noticed the door to the unit opposite mine was locked.
The thought of a strange man living so close made me uneasy. An idea struck me: I could rent the unit myself.
The landlord's number was conveniently posted on the door, so I called her immediately.
"Ms. Nash," I began politely, "I'd like to rent the unit across from mine."
There was a moment of hesitation on the other end. "Oh...J already collected a deposit from someone. How could I just take it back?"
"I'll pay you double the deposit to refund him," I offered. "And I'll increase the monthly rent."
The promise of extra income was too tempting for her to resist. After a brief pause, she agreed. "Let me speak to him and sort things out. I'll get back to you shortly." 1414

Feeling reassured, I hung up and headed to the hotel.
As soon as I stepped into the lobby, I spotted Selene sitting on one of the plush chairs.
She had every right to be there, but something about her presence felt deliberate. My instincts told me she was waiting for me.
Sure enough, when she heard my footsteps, she looked up and called out, "Elaine!"
Her tone was soft, almost pleading.
Since she had gone to the trouble of waiting for me, this had to be important-or so she wanted me to
think.
Without giving her a chance to speak, I cut her off. "If you're here to submit a report, you're wasting your time. I've already resigned."
I knew I was being petty, but I wanted her to feel embarrassed. My resignation had been partly because of her, and I wasn't over it yet.
She hesitated for a moment before saying, "Actually, I'm here to talk to you about that."
Her voice was gentle, her demeanor calm. I had seen both her sweet and manipulative sides before, but even now, she had the nerve to act like an innocent sheep.
No, not a sheep-a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Feigning interest, I sat down across from her. "Oh? What does Ms. Vaughn want to discuss?"
"Elaine," she began, "I really was at the amusement park for work. I had no ulterior motives, and I hope you won't misunderstand."
I laughed softly, the sound dripping with derision. "Misunderstand? You're the one who's overthinking things. I simply asked you to familiarize yourself with the park alongside Miles. Was that worth complaining to Logan about?" She shook her head quickly. "I didn't complain. Logan called me first, and I mentioned it to him. I never expected him to..."
She trailed off, her words hanging in the air.
I smirked. Of course, she wasn't here to explain. She was here to flaunt the fact that Logan had lost his temper and cut me off because of her.
Leaning back in my chair, I said calmly, "Logan's blinded by love. His brain is so fogged up with lust that it's not surprising he'd do something stupid."
Her face reddened, anger flashing in her eyes for a brief moment before she quickly masked it with feigned hurt. "Elaine, how can you say that? You loved him once. Isn't it basic decency not to insult your ex after breaking up?" "Decency?" I chuckled. "I reserve that for people who deserve it. When I was still married to Logan, you were busy making out with his friends and seducing other women's fiancés-all while carrying your dead husband's child. "So tell me, Ms. Vaughn, with your level of morality, do you really think you deserve mine?"
Her face turned pale as she stammered, "W-What are you talking about?"

"You said it yourself," I replied coldly. "If anyone is spouting nonsense, it's you. You admitted it at the restaurant that day."
Selene froze, her composure cracking as she stared at me in stunned silence.
After a moment, her eyes filled with tears, and she whispered, "He ruined me. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be like this. He owes me everything."
Her voice trembled with emotion, her body shaking as though she were genuinely distraught. It was hard to tell if she was acting or if some part of her words held truth.
People in the lobby began glancing over at us, but I wasn't worried. There were surveillance cameras everywhere, and I hadn't touched her. If she tried anything, it wouldn't hold up.
I regarded her carefully, dissecting her words.
Logan ruined her? He owed her?
I recalled what Logan had said about Selene's in-laws hating her and blaming her for her husband's death. Despite carrying her dead husband's child, her husband's family wanted nothing to do with her. Something clicked in my mind.
My chest tightened as I leaned forward slightly. "What does Logan owe you?"
