After much deliberation, I decided to approach Miles. I just needed a good reason.

Before I could act, Tessa called. Her voice was sharp with anger. "That rascal, Logan, is driving us to our graves! If he dares to marry that woman, I'll die right in front of him-with Ethan!"

Her fury didn't surprise me. I tried to calm her down. "Don't get upset, Tessa. Parents shouldn't interfere in their children's marriages."

"We didn't interfere, or things between you and Logan wouldn't have ended like this. But if he thinks he can marry a widow, he can forget it!" Tessa declared firmly.

Her words stung. Despite everything, I didn't want to defend Logan or Selene. They owed me an apology, and I wasn't saintly enough to forgive them so easily.

Tessa's tone softened as she revealed the real reason for her call. "Elaine, Ethan is so mad that he's staging a hunger strike. Could you come over and talk to him? You're the only one he listens to."

"Ethan is upset and refusing to eat. Tessa asked me to come, but I don't think I can handle it alone. Can you come too?"

Miles hesitated briefly before agreeing.

When I arrived at the Mercer estate, Miles was already there, waiting for me outside.

"You know how stubborn my father is," he said as I approached. "It's unlikely he'll listen to anyone,

even you."

I nodded, understanding his meaning. Ethan still hoped I would reconcile with Logan.

A mocking smile crept onto my face, but I said nothing.

We entered the house together. Tessa looked surprised to see us arrive together but didn't comment. "Where's Ethan?" I asked.

"In the study," Tessa replied. "He's locked himself in and refuses to come out. He spent the whole night there. If he wasn't yelling occasionally,
