Chapter 107

Gers

Ashton didn't say a word during our drive to the Mercer estate. I glanced at him, thinking he might be

nervous.

"When we get there, you just need to greet them. I'll handle any questions that come our way," I reassured him.

"Okay," he replied simply.

"If Logan is there and he says something mean or tries to make things difficult for you, don't hold back," I added firmly. "Okay," he said again, his tone calm.

"Oh, right. We need to get our story straight," I said, remembering the details we'd need to sell this charade. "Let's say we met in Amaty, and you... well, you liked me so much that you followed me here.*

I trailed off, feeling too shy to finish the sentence.

Ashton didn't miss a beat. "I probably won't mess that up," he said.

"Huh?" I turned to him, confused, but understanding dawned on me quickly.

He didn't elaborate, and I didn't know how to respond, so I stayed quiet. The silence between us grew, making the atmosphere slightly awkward.

The awkwardness made me a bit nervous, and my hands gripped the steering wheel tighter. Suddenly, the car in front of us slammed on its brakes, forcing me to react.

I barely had time to process what was happening when Ashton's hand shot out like lightning. He grabbed the steering wheel and turned it sharply. The car veered 45 degrees, skidding slightly but avoiding a collision. When the car screeched to a halt, I sat frozen in shock. Ashton's reflexes were unreal-almost superhuman.

"Focus on driving," he said, his voice steady but filled with concern. "It's fine if the car gets damaged, but what if you get hurt?"

I watched as he straightened out the car once the vehicle in front of us started moving again.

In that moment, my three years of driving experience felt laughable compared to the control and skill Ashton had just displayed.

It took me a while to recover from the shock, but as I drove on, I couldn't help but ask, "Your driving skills are unbelievable. Were you a driver in the army?"

"No," he replied, his tone neutral.

I glanced at him briefly. "Then what kind of soldier were you?"

"Special forces," he said simply.

I didn't know much about the military, but I'd seen enough on television to know that special forces were the elite-the best of the best. They were the ones on the front lines, handling the toughest missions. Ashton really was incredible. There was a toughness about him, a quiet strength that wasn't common

"Then why did you leave the military? Why not join the SWAT team or something?" I asked, genuinely curious.

His expression shifted slightly, and his voice softened. "My parents are gone," he said.

I stayed quiet, sensing there was more to the story.

"My father died in a car accident while driving his boss. He died with his boss and the boss's wife," Ashton continued, his gaze meeting mine briefly.

My heart clenched. His story hit too close to home-my parents had also died in a car accident. Hearing his words brought a wave of sadness over me.

"My mother passed away a few years later," Ashton said, his voice barely a whisper. "She couldn't cope with the depression that followed his death."

I could feel the pain in his words. He must have carried so much sorrow inside him. I regretted bringing up the topic.

"I'm so sorry," I murmured, unsure of what else to say.

But Ashton wasn't finished. His voice took on a sharper edge as he added, "But I suspect my father's accident wasn't an accident at
