My heart skipped a beat at his confession.
"I already told you that we can't be together," I said firmly. "If you're still holding onto that idea, I think we should stop pretending to be a couple. I'll find someone else." As soon as I said it, he took a step forward.
"Then who will you find?" he asked, his tone low and demanding.
Instinctively, I stepped back, but he advanced, his words dripping with jealousy. "Are you going to go. on more blind dates? Or find another guy? Maybe a friend?"
"Ashton!" I raised my hand to stop him, but my back hit the wall. I had run out of space to retreat.
Before I could say anything more, he said, "I do have feelings for you, but you rejected me. So I won't persist."
His words caught me off guard.
I blinked in confusion.
Ashton's expression remained composed, his deep, piercing eyes locked on mine. "I'm just a regular tenant living across from you now. Don't overthink it. Nothing will happen."
Did he just imply that 'I' was overthinking things?
Before I could respond, Ashton smoothly changed the subject. "What did you want to talk to me about?"
His question snapped me out of my daze, relieving some of the tension in the room. I followed his lead. "It's pretty late. Are you off work already? Is everything done at the amusement park?" "No," he replied matter-of-factly.
I scoffed. "If it's not done, why did you leave early? You said you'd finish on time-or even two days early!"
"I will," Ashton said confidently, his tone unwavering.
My irritation flared again. "But changing the testing process like this could cause delays if there are issues during the final inspection."
"I understand that, but I'll handle it. If there are any problems, I'll take responsibility," he said, his voice
calm but resolute.
His confidence was infuriating.
But as the lead on the lighting project, Ashton did have the authority to make those decisions.
After taking a moment to think it over, I reminded him, "Ashton, even though I've resigned and am no longer in charge of the lighting, I won't forgive you if the final result doesn't meet my expectations." Ashton's expression remained unchanged. "I promised I'd deliver, and I will."
There wasn't much more I could say after that.
"Fine. I hope so," I muttered and turned to leave.

But Ashton blocked my way.
I stared at him, confused. "What now?"
"I need your help with something," he said, his tone softer than usual.
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What is it?"
"I cooked too much food. Can you help me eat it?"
His words left me momentarily stunned before I burst out laughing.

All the tension I had felt since discovering he lived across the hall melted away. I kicked at him lightly and swatted at his arm. "Are you kidding me, Ashton? Do you think I'm a child?"
He let me hit him a few times before grabbing my wrists gently. "New neighbor, I hope we can get along."
"Ashton!" I exclaimed, exasperated.
He pulled me toward the dining table, where four dishes and a steaming bowl of soup were waiting. Had he really cooked this much for himself?
Or had he planned all along for me to discover he'd moved in?
I realized he must have decided to reveal it tonight, whether by chance or by intention.
Feeling outmaneuvered, I glared at him. "Ashton, you..."
Before I could finish, his deep voice interrupted me.
“Ms. Hart, please do me the favor of helping me with this food."
