That night, a fever consumed me. Grant did not return, and I was too weak

to summon aid. I managed to locate some remedies and swallowed them down with water, then collapsed back into bed, burning with fever. Finally, feverish sleep claimed me.

After a day and a night, the fever subsided. I heard the door creak open. Grant entered, ignoring me, packing his belongings. Only when he finished did he deign to glance at me.

"Wanda is unwell. I shall remain with her for several days. Summon me if you require anything."

Watching him leave without a second glance, I chuckled bitterly. What use

was a summons? I was pale and weak, and he hadn't noticed. Could I truly expect him to forsake Wanda for me?

Over the following days, Grant neither returned nor contacted me. Yet, I

My voice was so calm that none detected my deception. "The pack is

relocating, so I have retrieved my belongings."

"Relocating? To where?" He frowned. Before I could answer, Wanda interrupted.

"Rosie, I have been consumed by grief over Father's illness. I cannot believe I

requested Grant to sire a pup with me. It was foolish. Nothing transpired between us. Now that Father is gone, I no longer require a pup. I apologize." 12:41

She appeared sincere. Had I not seen that message, I might have believed her. But I didn't bother to challenge her. I merely nodded and withdrew to my room.

I had barely unpacked when my phone rang. It lay in the main room. As I

retrieved it, Grant burst in, my phone in his hand. His face was grim, his scent sharp with suspicion.

"Who is your mate?"
