Chapter Ghost of The Past
Kade's P.O.V
I decided that Madi might need some time with her wolf alone for a run, she was going through a lot but handling all the changes so well. I’m so proud of her, my mate. My wolf was a little on edge about her being out there, pacing back and forth. And truth be told so was I, something didn’t feel right.
I could sense her feelings before her voice broke through. She was on edge, her guard up. ‘Kade I’m worried, I’m not alone out here.’ Madi’s voice floated into my head. I growled, damn it, I knew I should’ve gone with her. I ran outside disregarding my clothing and shifted and bolted into the woods, trying to catch her scent. It was a faint warm caramel scent, I was on the right path, ‘Where are you, I’m coming.’ I said to her. Moments after, I heard a strong howl rip through the Forrest and I pushed my wolf harder to get to her. My wolf was roaring inside to find and protect our mate.
I broke through a clearing and my eyes instantly locked onto Madi’s pure white wolf, I quickly went to her and nudged my nose into her neck inhaling her intoxicating caramel scent, instantly I felt a million times better with her at my side. Thank the moon goddess she was okay. My concentration was broken when I heard footsteps nearing us, everything in the Forrest was eerily quiet. I protectively stepped in front of Madi pushing her behind me and growled in the direction.
The blonde woman came barreling through the bushes, I watched as Madis vision was playing out right before us. The blonde looked behind her in a panic but then she spotted us and my hackles rose and I released a warning growl. “GO! He’s coming!” she shouted at us before sprinting away from us. “Wait! We can help!” Madi yelled as the woman was running, I groaned when I turned and noticed Madi was in her human form. She was leaving herself vulnerable and defenseless, ‘Madi you need to shift back it isn’t safe like this!’ I warned her but she had a block up, damn it! Madi took off after the woman and I turned back waiting for the man, I could hear his heavy footsteps coming from the same direction.
I could hear the footsteps slow and I got into a crouching position, ready to attack. But the Forrest went silent and I could hear the steps change direction, I let out a deep growl and took off towards the man. The next thing I know, I hear Madi let out a scream, I was too late. Her scream sent me into a spiral of panic. I pushed my wolf to go as fast as we could. I can’t lose her!
I made it to Madi and the man was almost to her now, I let out a deadly warning growl and lunged at the man. I locked my jaws around his leg and pulled him away from Madi and the woman, I released my hold as he swung at me. I lunged again, this time catching his neck in a deadly grip making him still instantly, knowing one wrong move would end it all. ‘Get alpha Finn here and some warriors.’ I said in Madi’s head. ‘They’re almost here Kade’ she spoke back frantically.
Alpha Finn and some pack warriors found us finally. Alpha Finn shifted back to human form along with the warriors “Take the rogue to the cells!” He growled out. I released my hold on the rogue when the warriors had him in custody and shifted back. “I’ll see you soon Katie!” The rogue yelled as he was hauled to the cells, a cruel smile on his face. I froze. It can’t be Katie.
I looked at Madi for confirmation and back at Katie. “K-katie? Is it really you?” Madi asked with a broken voice, I could feel the broken hope coming from her. “Yeah, Who are you?” She said quietly back to Madi. I watched as Madi fell to her knees, I could feel the sorrow and hope seeping through the ever-growing bond we shared. Madi burst into tears ” It’s me, Madi.” I saw Katie’s grey eyes connecting the dots and then widen in shock, in recognition as to who we are to her. “Madi is it really you?” Madi nodded her head in reply and Katie erupted in tears.
“Oh Katie I thought I’d never see you again,” Madi said as she rushed to hug Katie. “I’ve missed you so much Madi.” Katie said in between sobs. I let the girls have their moment before approaching Katie myself.
“Katie, do you remember me?” I asked. “I’d remember those green eyes anywhere Kade, get over here!” she all but yelled with a sad smile and tears still streaming down her face. We all sat there for a while in a group hug, with our lost childhood friend.
Katie is alive, and she’s home.
Madilynne's P.O.V
I didn’t expect my vision to be of Katie, but for it I was thankful. She’s alive, and back home where she belongs. I wanted to ask her where she had been but I could see by just looking at her, wherever it was, it wasn’t good. My heart hurt for her. “let’s get you to the house, it’s getting late. Are you hungry, tired?” I asked her, she looked worn out. Exhausted like she hadn’t slept for days. Her eyes looked so dull from what I remembered them being.
The three of us started our walk back to the house, as we fell into a quiet walk. The Forrest was alive, with all the night critters and crickets singing their tune. I could hear an owl hoot off in the distance, as the wind carried it to my ears. I glanced over at Katie, I noticed a burn mark on her neck that looked like it was recent. I made a mental note to ask her about it later after she was settled in, I didn’t know what she had been through and I didn’t want to push her.
‘It’s a mating mark, it can only be removed by death or burned off from silver or wolfsbane.’ Willow’s voice floated through my head.
Fuck, I hadn’t even considered she was a shifter too. Where was her mate?
