Ellie stood by the door, not planning to let Alex in.

They stood facing each other at the door, with Alex staring intensely at Ellie.

He said, "Just because I disagree with the adoption, you decide to push me over the edge?"

Despite his harsh words, Alex offered Ellie the pink shopping bag in his hand.

Ellie glanced at the new phone Alex held out to her and took it without showing any emotion.

Probably due to drinking too much, Alex's eyes were bloodshot and filled with a dangerous and aggressive look that made Ellie step back cautiously. Locking eyes with Ellie, Alex threatened her by saying, "Ellie, I'm giving you one last chance. Promise me you won't pursue the adoption."

Ellie searched for the doorknob with her hand hidden behind her back. She said, "No, I won't promise you."

Alex grasped Ellie's shoulders with both hands, secretly applying pressure.

Towering over her, he carefully observed her expression. He asked, "Ellie, are you sure?"

Ellie replied, "Yes, I'm sure."

They locked eyes, and the atmosphere around them was incredibly tense and oppressive.

With a "click", the door lock opened.

Ellie pushed past Alex, turned into the room, and closed the door behind her, leaving him outside.

Alex didn't hurry to leave.

Leaning against the wall, he lit a cigarette. His suit jacket hung open casually, giving off a sense of sophistication. He squinted and took a deep drag, his fingertips glowing red. His half-closed eyes slowly blurred in the light smoke, making it hard to discern his real intentions.

He radiated a frightening aura, like a dangerous beast waiting in the shadows.

Ellie looked through the peephole and saw Alex lingering outside her door like a lurking criminal, occasionally smoking and staring at her door.

She couldn't understand the thoughts of the madman. As long as Alex was there, she was too scared to sleep.

As the elevator door opened, Lacey stepped out, making Haley stop.

Haley's face visibly twitched with anger. She said, "Lacey, you're from a prestigious family. How could you talk insults all the time? Aren't you worried about being mocked?"

Lacey shrugged. "If you bitch aren't worried about that, why should I be?"

Haley's face turned pale from Lacey's repeated insults of "bitch".

Trying to keep her temper in check, Haley changed the topic. "Lacey, if you really treat Ellie as your friend, you should talk some sense into her. Even if she joins the Warren family, she will never get their wealth, let alone Alex." Lacey rolled up her sleeves, ready to fight. "You son of a bitch. If you dare spread unfounded rumors about Ellie again, I'll make you regret it."

Haley frowned and stepped back. "I saw Ellie with Alex myself. She's plotting to join the Warren family not to be their adopted daughter, but their hostess."

Lacey talked back. "What's wrong with that? They're not related by blood. Anyone with the ability can go for it."

Haley exclaimed, "How can you say that, Lacey? Alex is my fiance"

Lacey said, "So what? Back then, you were dreaming about the future with Aaron while secretly getting close to Alex."

"How dare you!" Haley was rendered speechless by Lacey's words

Lacey said, "I don't have any principles, morals, or limits. I have nothing to say to someone as sleazy as you.

"Instead of wasting your time talking here, why don't you try to have more kids with your man? Maybe Mrs. Warren will let you join the family for the sake of the children."

As soon as Lacey finished speaking, Ellie opened the door and walked out.

Haley said, "So you were at home?"

Ellie pulled Lacey inside, completely ignoring Haley as if she were invisible.

As Ellie was about to close the door, Haley grabbed the handle and asked, "Is Alex here?"

Ellie frowned. "Why would you think someone you can't hold on to would be with me?"

Haley's face turned various shades from Ellie's remark.

Suppressing her emotions, Haley said calmly, "Ellie, we were friends for years. If you promise not to tempt Alex, I'll persuade him to let you join the Warren family. Let's forget the past and get along peacefully." Ellie showed a hint of impatience. "I don't need his permission to join the Warren family."

Ignoring Haley's furious look, Ellie said, "You, Haley Owens, and I will never get along peacefully."

Ellie never dared to expect those who hurt her to reflect on their actions. Instead, they would just keep increasing their harm.

Seeing that Ellie wouldn't give in, Haley couldn't keep her cool. "Alex is the only heir of the Warren family. His parents are getting older, and sooner or later, they'll hand everything over to him.

Ellie gave Lacey a reassuring look and said, "Don't worry about me. We're at the Warren Manor. She wouldn't dare try anything against me here."

Lacey tugged at Ellie's arm and whispered, "I just came up from downstairs. The people the Warren family sent to look for Alex haven't come back yet. Mrs. Warren even asked Layton for help yesterday, but there's still no news. Everyone's talking about it."
