Chapter 516
Chapter 516 Narrow Escape *Selena*
As Emile and I cautiously emerged from the treacherous territory of the data room and stepped into the dimly lit lobby far away from the perilous situation of getting caught, I seized the opportunity to engage in a conversation with her. "So, you already know why I'm here?!" I inquired, my curiosity bubbling to the surface.
"I received information that someone was coming to the pack to get the job done, and well, here you are and the only new addition to the pack. Not much of a surprise," Emile replied nonchalantly, her tone tinged with a hint of indifference.
I couldn't help but snort, shaking my head in disbelief. So, that was the reason she had never bothered to meet me after my return to the Moonglow Pack.
"So, you're the one who hired me for this job then?" I pressed, trying to hide the skepticism in my voice.
The idea of Emile being the mastermind behind such an intricate plan seemed improbable, considering the astronomical amount of money involved. Nonetheless, I hoped to glean some information about the elusive client from her. "No," she answered with precision, denying any involvement in the hiring process.
"Then who is the boss? I mean, you work for someone, right?!" I probed further, determined to unearth any tidbits of information she might be withholding.
The lobby had small windows aligned along its outer wall, and the moon cast an eerie glow over the desolate clearing, its pale light barely illuminating the figures locked in a tense standoff.
Emile remained silent, refusing to divulge any information.
"Emile, I asked you something," I said, my voice laced with an undercurrent of politeness as I desperately tried to maintain an air of enthusiasm. "Who is your boss?"
A flicker of doubt passed through her eyes before she composed herself and replied, "I don't know."
Really?! Did she actually not know about her employer?! It was hard to believe.
Suppressing a surge of frustration, I decided to test her further, hoping to expose the depths of her betrayal.
"You know, Emile, I must say I'm impressed," I began, my voice dripping with a mix of admiration and veiled menace. "Taking such risks, defying the cruelest Alpha King. How is it that I never knew about you before? It would have made exacting revenge so much simpler." I watched her carefully, searching for any sign of vulnerability. A glimmer of hope danced in my eyes as I urged her to succumb to my manipulation.
Come on, fall for it!
Emile, however, remained unfazed by my words. Her indifference sliced through the tension, shattering the illusion of control I had tried to project.
"Selena, don't forget you are here because you are getting paid for this job, and I am also here for one reason only-I am getting paid. I hold no personal grudges against the Alpha king," she replied coolly, her voice devoid of emotion.
A wave of disappointment washed over me. It seemed my attempt to manipulate her had failed, and she remained resolute in her loyalty to her motives, unmoved by my words. I would need to find another way to uncover the truth.
Although the revelation that she was betraying Alpha Zander had surprised me, now I needed to know if there were others involved. I couldn't help but give her an enthusiastic smile, hoping she would accept the truth and share more information with me. "This means Maddox also works against the Alpha?!" I asked in a voice filled with intrigue.
I couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the mightiest Alpha King, Zander Blake, wondering how long he could survive with his own people turning against him, even his trusted Beta.
Emile's face turned pale, panic evident in her eyes.
"No!" she exclaimed, her voice laced with fear. "Don't talk to him about it. He knows nothing."
Ah, so Alpha Zander still had a loyal Beta. At least Maddox wasn't a traitor like Emile. I nodded, trying to convey my understanding of the situation.
"Okay," I said, my tone filled with sincerity. "It's good you told me. I will be cautious around him."
I wanted Emile to believe that I was on her side and that I understood the gravity of the situation.
Emile nodded in response, yet the serious expression never left her face.
"I am here to help you whenever you don't get yourself out of trouble. Don't expect anything more from me," Emile whispered, but her tone held an icy edge. Her words carried a hint of reluctance as if she was bored of doing this. I nodded slowly. However, a lingering question plagued my thoughts, refusing to be silenced.
"But I don't understand one thing,
Emile. How did you manage to open the door without a key?" The query had burdened my mind for far too long, for f Emile possessed the key, the client would have entrusted it to me. Moreover, if I hadn't been apprehended within the confines of the data room, Emile's true nature would have remained concealed.
Her gaze, filled with a mixture of frustration and exasperation, met mine.
"I have Maddox's fingerprints, Selena. With that, I can gain access to anything he can." Her response held a note of resignation as if she had grown weary of my
persistent inquiries. "But do your best to avoid such predicaments. Sometimes, I may not be able to come to your aid, and it can cost you your life," she cautioned, casting a disdainful glance my way.
"I have no desire to meet my end in such a way," I murmured amusingly. Not before I fulfill my purpose!
"Have you finished the work?" Emile inquired, her voice laced with impatience as her gaze fixed on me.
"Not today. It's not such an easy task. Otherwise, your boss wouldn't have entrusted it to the best hacker," I retorted with a smirk, hinting at the high risk involved in the mission.
Emile rolled her eyes in response.
"Get it done quickly, Selena, and get out of this pack before anyone finds out. You've already wasted too much time," she commanded, exuding authority.
I found her authority quite amusing. Although she wasn't the one paying me for this job, it was her boss.
"Sure thing," I replied, maintaining a friendly smile.
"Now, swiftly make your way to your Omega quarter before anyone catches sight of you," she ordered once more, causing me to roll my eyes inwardly.
Emile wasn't someone I would willingly obey; I merely played along, letting her believe that I followed every command. With a nod and a smile, I pretended to comply.
I watched as she turned and retreated toward her own room.
Today had been a whirlwind of
drama, leaving my nerves frazzled and in desperate need of something to calm them down. With that in
mind, I stealthily made my way.
toward Zander's private bar. Il
he wouldn't be around until morning, giving me ample time to indulge in a few drinks, just like I had done countless times before, without him ever finding out.
The dimly lit room greeted me with its cozy atmosphere as I stepped inside. Rows of gleaming bottles adorned the shelves, tempting me with their intoxicating contents. The scent of aged whiskey and spiced rum filled the air, instantly soothing my senses. No one was allowed to enter his private bar, a testament to his self-centered nature. Such a conceited jerk he was!
I approached the mahogany bar,
running my fingers along its smooth
surface, and surveyed the
assortment of beverages. From
top-shelf spirits to artisanal
cocktails, the choices were plentiful. Tonight, I craved the deep warmth of a smoky scotch, its amber liquid swirling gently in a crystal tumbler. I reached for the bottle, the weight of
it comforting in my hands.
As I poured the rich, caramel-colored liquid into the glass, the sound of it hitting the surface echoed softly in the room. The aroma enveloped me, evoking a sense of sophistication and rebellion. It was my secret indulgence, my personal escape from the chaos that constantly engulfed my life.
Raising the glass to my lips, I took a slow sip, savoring the smooth, smoky flavor as it danced across my tongue. The warmth spread through my body, easing the tension and loosening the knots that had formed within me. Each sip brought me closer to a state of calm, a respite from the storm that raged both within and outside these walls.
Lost in the moment, I allowed myself to forget the troubles that plagued me, if only for a little while. The world outside ceased to exist as I became immersed in the solace of the bar, cocooned in its ambiance. For a brief moment, I had found the calmness I so desperately sought.
"The Alpha King, my ass!" I snorted, staring at the amber-filled glass before me. "His arrogance will be his downfall, and he'll pay for every sin he's committed," I whispered into the silence of the room.
In the intoxicating embrace of alcohol, I wanted to curse him further, to unleash all my pent-up frustration after the betrayal of my ex-mate. But the words refused to form in my mind, leaving me groaning in sheer frustration.
"What the hell! I can't even curse you in your own pack! What kind of magic have you woven here?" I exclaimed, feeling a desperate desire welling up inside me.
I had to escape this bizarre pack as soon as possible. I needed to run far away from the clutches of the murderous Alpha King before he discovered my plans.
