Chapter Epilogue | Kirk's Journal | The Dragon Master
We lost. The battle against Osiris didn’t end well at all. We held our own for a little while, but we have suffered a major loss. I had known for weeks that Nara Roman and Julie Brooks had cast an illegal body switching spell. Today, that problem has come to a head. The real Ms. Roman was stabbed by the remains of a Basilisk Arrow, wielded by one of Osiris’s undead warriors. She is laying in the Academy’s infirmary as we speak. There is no known cure for this type of poison. She will die in a body not her own. Jason and Ms. Brooks haven’t left her side. As for Mr. Dickenson, he remains under the possession of Osiris... if his soul still exists.
Reinforcements arrived in enough time to destroy the revived mummies. Osiris managed to escape and grows more powerful with every passing moment. If this continues, his words will come true... every living person on earth will die. The dead will become slaves to Osiris, and it’s all my fault. I should have realized that Barry was going through too much for someone his age to deal with. He’s a good kid. He doesn’t deserve to die... none of my students do. But that doesn’t matter to the Council. I was called to their headquarters shortly after the mission.
“Osiris is only a minor threat, Agent Louis.” said the Council.
“With all due respect,” I said, “you didn’t see how powerful he is. Osiris will eliminate every last person on this planet!”
“Not if he’s dead.”
“What?” I asked. “You can’t seriously be thinking of killing Barry Dickenson?”
“Can’t you see the bigger picture?” said the Council. “Every single member of the Mystic Brats are bound by the Lunar Necklace. If one of them is poisoned by a Basilisk Arrow...”
“...Then we all are,” I said.
“You are the only exception, Agent Louis,” said the Council. “Since you are a Dragon Master, your powers will allow you and you alone to survive. As for the students... they must perish.”
“What about Nara Roman,” I said. “If she dies — the Lady of the Lake will kill us all!”
“She is a threat that can be handled in a year,” said the Council, “but she will be dealt with!”
“And Jason Gardner?” I said. “He saved countless lives when the Order attacked the original academy! He may be the only one who can find Eddie Stern.”
“There are other ways,” said the Council.
“The baby...”
“His brother will be born with the greatest potential for magic than anyone in a century,” said the Council. “He will prove to be a greater asset than you. Even if all the Mystic Brats die, your life alone will still keep the child and its mother alive. The child will lead us to Agent Stern in good time.”
“You can’t sacrifice my students!” I shouted.
“You are dismissed, Agent Louis.”
I teleported back to the Academy in disgust. There was no way I would let my students... my family... die. I took out my phone and dialed the number of my closest friend. “Travis, we need to talk.”
I met Travis inside a secret Academy bunker called the Vault. It contains some of the world’s deadliest mystical artifacts. A power dampening field keeps them from calling out to the students with powerful enough magical abilities. I needed it off.
“What — you can’t be serious?” said a startled Travis.
“You are the headmaster, Travis, so I know that you can deactivate it,” I said.
“Do you have any idea what the Council would do to me?” asked Travis.
“The Council wants Julie Brooks, Jason Gardner, and Nara Roman dead along with Barry Dickenson! There is only one person and one spell that can save them. I need my full powers to achieve it, and the only way that is possible is if I find my Amarus Orb.”
“I...”
“Travis, you’ve been my closest friend since the night we first fought together,” I said. “You have practically raised Julie Brooks since she was a child! She has always thought of you as her father. If any of that has ever meant anything to you... you will help me save them tonight!”
“I can keep it down for five minutes,” said Travis.
“Good,” I said. “I just need you to promise me one last thing...”
As soon as Travis lowered the dampening field — I heard the Call. It sounded like a heartbeat, pulsing throughout the vault. It didn’t take me long to find a chest the size of my hand. Likewise, it felt as hot as a small, burning sun. Inside was the Amarus Orb. I knew this was the time... the moment I had waited years for. I grasped the orb as it burst into a thousand flames around my body. The flames danced painfully on my skin. Memory after memory flooded back to me. It felt like I was reliving eighteen years of my life in just a few seconds, and then... I was reborn, I was no longer just Kirk Louis, I am... Jason Gardner from ten years into the future. Damien Drake is my brother. And the reason I had come back was to kill my grandfather, Eddie Stern, before he wiped out all life on earth.
