Chapter 38 - The Romanov's
Just as I was about to fall asleep last night, Kaden had asked me to come with him to New York for the weekend. Since I had no important assignments, I happily agreed to accompany him.
And now, we had arrived at the airport in the early hours of the morning and immediately checked in. The wait wasn’t long and soon, we were boarding the plane. As Kaden and I sat down in our seats, I was thankful that we weren’t seated with anybody else and had our own window seat.
“Your brother lives in New York, right?” Kaden asks about an hour into the flight.
“Yes, he works in upper east side Manhattan as a mechanical engineer.” I explain, resting my head on his shoulder as I watch us fly past the clouds. “Nick is mostly busy though, he graduated top of the class and was immediately snatched up by one of the top companies.”
“Wow, so the smart gene runs in the family huh?” He whistles lowly, chuckling when I scoff.
“You won’t think Nick is smart when you meet him. He’s like a child stuck in an adult’s body.” I smile, shaking my head as I remember memories of the crazy things Nick had done.
“I’m meeting him?”
I pull away, sitting upright. “You don’t want to?”
“You sure he won’t pull out a shotgun the minute he sees me?” He smirks, brushing his lips against my knuckles.
“Don’t worry, he will do no such thing.” I smile, watching him relax. “The shotgun is with my Dad.”
I bite my lip to stifle my laughter when his head whips around and he stares at me with wide eyes. I smile sweetly, cuddling closer before focusing my attention on the small television screen playing a comedy movie we were both watching.
“Moon Goddess help me.” I hear him whisper to himself before he relaxes slightly.
We touch down at the airport in New York, collecting our bags and walking out of arrivals in no time. A man stood holding a white board with Kaden’s name on it in big letters. I point in his direction before we walk over, the man notifying us that he is a pack member who will be driving us back to King Romanov’s place.
After following him into the parking lot, Kaden helps him put our luggage in the boot before joining me in the back, draping his arm across my shoulders and pulling me close. I sigh in content, pecking his jaw before the driver got in and reversed out of the parking space.
Halfway through the ride, Kaden tells the driver to stop. He tells me that he’ll be back in a few minutes and I nod, waiting for him in the car as he enters a toy store. Ten minutes later, he walks out with two large bags, making my eyes widen. After he places them in the boot, he joins me again and we drive off.
“I’m a god parent to the Romanov twins.” He explains, a grin on his lips as he settles in his seat.
“I can tell that you love to spoil them.” I laugh lightly, referring to the large bags filled to the brim with toys.
He nods, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Their parents are going to kill me.”
“I never asked how you know the Romanovs.” I state, placing my hand over his that is curled around my thigh.
“King Vulcan Romanov’s mate is my best friend, after Rico. Aurora and I met in school when she transferred over. Vulcan took some time to grow used to me but after some incidents, he finally trusted me enough to look out for his pups.” He rolls his eyes playfully, a small smile on his lips as he recalls the memories.
“Why did everyone seem so afraid when you mentioned his name last night?” I ask, cuddling up to him.
“Because Vulcan is a hybrid, he has both a vampire and wolf within him. He’s feared because he can destroy someone within a second. People can’t stand to be in the same room as him for long because of how powerful and dangerous he is. Their wolves can’t handle it.” He murmurs, playing with my hair.
Before I could ask anything else, we turn onto a dirt road leading us deep into a forest. Eventually, we arrive at a clearing and I am amazed to see that there are large buildings, a diner, a medical clinic and a warehouse built all within reasonable distance of each other. It was like a mini town!
Thinking that we were going to stop here, I grew confused when the driver continued. We park outside on the driveway of a beautiful mansion and my jaw drops at how luxurious it is. Kaden chuckles at my reaction before opening the door and helping me out of the car.
We grab our luggage and thank the driver before I follow Kaden up the walkway to the front doors. I grow nervous with each step I take and he seems to sense it because he grabs my hand after ringing the bell, telling me it’s going to be okay.
The doors open and I look down to see a young girl with light brown hair and stunning green eyes. Her eyes widen at the sight of Kaden before she takes a deep breath.
“Uncle Kaden!” She screams loudly before making grabby hands at him.
He laughs loudly before picking her up, pressing a kiss to her cheek. “Hey princess, missed me?”
“Yes! Did you bring me presents?” She asks sweetly, her hands on his cheeks.
“I better hope not.” A voice interrupts, making me stare in awe at the young woman before us.
Aurora is simply stunning in real life with her jet-black hair, grey eyes and fair complexion. If I hadn’t met Kaden and known that he had no siblings, I would have assumed they were twins. She grins widely before stepping forward to hug Kaden. He chuckles and comments on how he couldn’t even wrap his arms around her properly because of her baby bump. Smacking his arm with a glare, she turns to me and a kind smile graces her lips.
“It’s so lovely to finally meet you in person, Luna!” She greets before pulling me into a hug.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” I murmur shyly, stepping back to Kaden’s side when she pulls away.
Before any of us can say anything, a young boy with identical features to the girl ran out. He yells Kaden’s name in joy before glaring at his twin, whining about how he wants to be picked up. Kaden smirks and crouches down, picking the boy up in his arms and holding both twins who can’t get over how strong he is. I think my heart just melted at the sight of Kaden with kids.
“Ivan, where’s your father?” Aurora asks, a frown on her lips as she looks back into the house.
Ivan shrugs carelessly before directing his stare to me. “Pretty girl.”
I laugh, mentally cooing over how cute he is. He has black hair just like his mother but green eyes like his sister. He stretches his arms out, wanting me to hold him and I grin, trying to take him from Kaden’s arms.
Kaden’s smile drops before he glowers at the child, leaning close to whisper in his ear. “Back off pup, she’s mine.”
“Kaden!” I scold, shaking my head at him whilst Ivan sticks his tongue out at his uncle before I take him.
I bounce the little boy in my arms, chuckling when he squeals loudly and claps his hands. He is so cute, all I want to do is cuddle him. Aurora invites us in and I follow Kaden, both of us holding the twins. Her cloudy grey eyes seem to twinkle at our intertwined hands and she shoots a knowing look to Kaden. I marvel at the exquisite interior of the home, not a speck of dirt to be seen. Everything is in immaculate condition and I can notice a feminine touch to the place.
Just as we have set our luggage by the door and taken a seat on one of the couches, a gruff voice yells out Aurora’s name making her roll her eyes. Kaden chuckles as she calls out to her mate, telling him where she is before taking a seat on the couch opposite us.
“How’s Romanov?” Kaden asks, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Aurora huffs and crosses her arms over her round belly. “Being an overprotective ass.”
“You’re carrying our pup Aurora. I believe I have a right to be overprotective.” A deep voice cut in, making us look to the side to see a tall man emerging out of a hallway behind the grand staircase.
Vulcan Romanov has dark brown hair with forest green eyes, a muscular build that intimidates me with sharp features. It seems like all supernatural creatures are flawless and carved to perfection by God above. His green eyes are a perfect match with the twins and Ayla looks exactly like him.
Ivan starts wiggling and I set him down on the floor, watching as he runs over to his father who picks him up with a large smile. Vulcan kisses his son’s cheek, making his way over to the couch. His eyes meet mine and flash in recognition.
“Your mate?” He asks Kaden, draping his arm across Aurora’s shoulders who instantly leans back into his touch.
Kaden grins, pulling me closer to his side. “Luna Winters.”
Vulcan chuckles, nodding his head at me in greeting. “It’s nice to meet you in person, Luna.”
“You too.” I smile, a sense of calm washing over me which makes me look over to Kaden with gratefulness.
“How’s Berlin?” Vulcan asks Kaden and I feel his body tense up against mine.
Kaden sighs and looks to me, making me grab his hand and give it a motivational squeeze. “Not so good.”
“What happened?” Aurora asked, her eyes narrowed with a protective glint.
“The council are summoning me to court. A lot of the packs that my father targeted when he was alive found rogues camping out at the borders of their territory.” Kaden explains, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Okay...but why would the council be summoning you to court for that? Those rogues could be sent by anybody.” Vulcan frowns, his eyes taking on a calculative look.
“There’s been twenty-three murders in the packs that my father tried to take down when he was still alive. Those Alphas think that I’m finishing what he started. The rogues that camped out by their territories all said that I had sent them.” Kaden growls in frustration, inhaling my scent deeply to calm him down. “That’s why I’ve come here to ask for your help. I don’t know what to do and how to handle the Council. Thomas is away otherwise I would have asked him.”
“Let’s talk more in my study.” Vulcan stands with a serious expression before turning to his mate. “Take care of yourself and Luna okay?”
She nods and I look away as they share a quick kiss before he walks off. Kaden turns to me and presses a gentle kiss to my temple, murmuring for me to be safe and stay with Aurora before he follows the Alpha into his study. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding in which makes Aurora chuckle lightly. She shakes her head before standing, gesturing for me to follow her into the kitchen.
“Don’t mind Vulcan, he may look scary but he’s like a teddy bear.” She smiles softly at her children, keeping her eyes on them through the large kitchen window as they play on the carpet in the sitting room.
“Was it that obvious?” I ask quietly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
“Yes, but he’s used to it. Alphas are naturally intimidating anyways. Coffee?” She asks, making me nod eagerly.
I offer to help which she declines, mumbling about how she is still capable of doing ordinary tasks whilst pregnant. Soon, she brings over two mugs of steaming coffee and we walk back into the sitting room.
“So, how did you two meet?” She asks, her hand resting protectively on her swollen belly.
I smile softly at the memories, shaking my head. “At a hospital. I’m on placement there and Kaden came in one night injured so I treated him. We kept bumping into each other and eventually he asked me out on a date.”
“By that dreamy smile on your lips I assume he treats you like a queen?” Her eyes twinkle, a teasing smirk on her lips that makes me blush furiously.
“He does. Sometimes I feel like I don’t deserve it all. He’s too good to me.” I nod, grinning at Ayla when she holds up her toy to me.
“Take care of him for me.” Aurora speaks in a quiet tone, her eyes glazed as she recalls something. “Kaden deserves nothing but happiness in his life now, don’t ever hurt him. Always stay by his side, promise me?”
“I promise.” I murmur, feeling my chest tighten in pain as I remember his troubled past.
It is ten at night when Kaden finally comes back to the guest room we are staying in. I am sitting in the middle of the bed with my legs crossed, a book in my hands with my hair spilling down my shoulders. He stops rubbing his eyes and stares at me, making me frown in confusion. I look around to see nothing out of the ordinary.
“What?”
He shakes his head, a tired smile on his lips as he walks closer but his eyes turn stormy when he doesn’t take them off me. Instead of going to change in the bathroom like I thought he would, he heads straight for me making me tense in anticipation.
Abruptly, he pulls me close and leans down, smashing his lips to mine in a heated kiss. I whimper from surprise before melting into his touch, wrapping my arms around his neck. Losing my balance, I fall back onto the bed with him following, ending up on top of me. We pay no mind and continue kissing, his hands slipping underneath my top and caressing my sides.
A guttural groan escapes him when he discovers that I have no bra on, his hand cupping my breast and kneading it. I moan breathlessly, tugging on the ends of his hair causing his chest to vibrate with a growl. My lungs fill with air again when he pulls away, leaving me panting quietly. He places a gentle kiss to my mark, chuckling softly when my body jolts in response.
He smiles and gets off the bed, walking away into the bathroom. My phone makes a sound and I open it, smiling when I see that my brother has texted me. As soon as he heard that I was in New York, he wanted to meet Kaden and I for dinner. Mostly Kaden because I knew he was curious to meet who I’m dating.
I grin with excitement as I type back a reply to my Nick. The sound of a door opening catches my attention and I look over to see Kaden leaning against the door of the bathroom, a gentle smile on his lips with a look of adoration in his bright blue eyes. My eyes roam over his naked torso, naughty thoughts running free in my mind. I can’t help it, he’s only in black boxers and looks way too distracting for his own good.
“What’s got you in a happy mood, little mate?” He walks over and picks me up, making me squeal as he places me on his lap.
“Nick wants to have dinner with us tomorrow night!” I cheer, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“Oh,” He’s suddenly nervous, pulling his bottom lip between his pearly white teeth. “What time?”
“Around eight if that’s okay with you?” I sigh before cupping his face in my hands, my thumb caressing his cheek. “Hey, don’t be nervous. It’s just my brother.”
“Exactly.” Kaden deadpans, smirking when I smack his chest with a huff.
His eyes suddenly darken making my heart flutter. Leaning closer, his breath fans across my skin and my eyes shut in response. His lips trail across my heated skin, barely hovering over my mark before he leaves an open-mouthed kiss on it, a loud moan escaping my lips.
“What are you going to wear?” He asks in a dangerously seductive tone causing my thighs to clench.
“It’s a surprise.” I reply breathlessly, my nails digging into his back as he nibbles on my mark.
“Goddess, I want you Luna.” He growls huskily, making my eyes snap open.
“We’re in somebody’s house!” I whisper-shout, pushing him away when he tries to lay me down on the bed. “Plus, you have an early meeting with Vulcan tomorrow so you need to get some sleep.”
“So?” He arches a brow, hands slipping under my shirt and roaming my skin. “I’ll be quick.”
“You’re never quick.” I roll my eyes, watching a roguish smirk grace his lips.
“Fine, but I want my dessert tomorrow.” He presses his lips to mine in a quick kiss before pulling the covers on top of us.
I’m glad when he turns off the lamps because now he can’t see the raging blush on my cheeks. I sigh softly, cuddling up to him. Kaden sure knows how to drive me crazy sometimes.
