Chapter 6
The driver noticed Chloe’s concerns and explained, “Mr. Joseph just returned to the country recently. There’s no other place for
him to stay other than the ancestral mansion so he temporarily purchased this house. If you mind it, I can talk to him.”
“No, no, I don’t mind!” She forgot that Joseph had been living abroad for many years. It was normal for him not to have a house
here. When she gave it a second thought, living under the same roof seemed like a good option to foster closer ties.
As soon as the driver left, Chloe picked up her suitcase and walked into the bedroom next to Joseph’s.
At half past five in the afternoon, she finished unpacking. She went to the living room and scanned the place. The villa was
minimally decorated, with only the essentials for living and there was a lot of sparse, empty space. As the driver had mentioned,
it looked like Joseph had just recently moved in.
Chloe’s eyes fell on the refrigerator. When she opened it, she found that it was fully stocked with fresh ingredients. Her eyes
brightened up and immediately started searching online for cooking tutorials. After all, as someone’s wife, she had an obligation
to serve her husband hot, fresh meals when he came home from work.
Half an hour later, Joseph got home.
Upon hearing the sound of someone entering the house, Chloe turned her head to catch a glimpse of the man changing his
shoes in the foyer. He had broad shoulders, long legs, and an impeccable physique that was accentuated by his suit.
Like everyone else, Chloe found it hard to resist beautiful things. She could not help but take a few more glances before
speaking up with a smile, “You go ahead and rest. I’ll call you when the food is ready.”
Joseph raised his head and looked at Chloe who was standing in the kitchen. There was a smile on her face and she was
wearing an apron. After a short while, he replied, “Okay.”
He thought Chloe knew how to cook, but little did he expect that this was Chloe’s first time trying her hand at cooking, so of
course, she messed up.
Chloe frowned as she looked at the burnt pork chop in front of her. She hesitated for a moment before taking a piece and putting
it in her mouth.
Her whole face wrinkled up. “It...it’s still edible. Just a little bitter.”
However, she was pretty certain that Joseph would not eat something like this. Even if he did, she could not embarrass herself
by serving it to him.
Chloe glanced at the time and knew that she would not have enough time to prepare anything else. Therefore, she decided to
order some takeout.
She ordered a bunch of dishes but before she could place the order, she received a phone call from Benjamin. As soon as she
picked up, his angry voice entered her ear. “Where are you right now?”
It was not the right time for her to tell her father about her marriage to Joseph yet. Her eyes darted around as she tried to find an
appropriate response.
“I-I’m with Em.”
Upon hearing her response, Benjamin’s anger began to rise. He almost could not resist the urge to scold her for lying but Karen
stopped him. “Calm down. Let’s focus on what’s important.”
“Mommy’s right, Daddy. We have to sign that order with Lionel Lynch this month...” Ava chimed in, her voice thick with worry.
“But he said he’ll only sign it with Coco...”
Benjamin looked at Karen and Ava. Both of them were dedicated to the company. In contrast, not only was Chloe disobedient
toward him, but she was also having an affair with an old man. In his opinion, she was a disgrace to his family.
Suppressing his anger, he ordered in a commanding tone, “Go to Cloudia Restaurant tomorrow at noon to sign the contract with
Mr. Lionel.
Chloe frowned. “Isn’t the project being handled by Tommy?”
“Tommy has resigned so you’ll be taking over now.”
“But I know nothing about the project,” Chloe argued, her face clouded with suspicion. “If Tommy has resigned, don’t you think
it’s better to send someone else from the project team to sign the contract with Mr. Lionel?”
Benjamin lost all his patience. “I don’t care! If I say you go, you go! If you refuse or mess it up, there will be no place in this home
for you any longer!”
With that, he hung up the phone. As Chloe continued to stare at her phone, Benjamin sent the project’s data and progress to her
email.
After browsing through it, she realized that they were at the final step of signing the contract as Benjamin said, and the profits
were substantial. If she took over, she could earn a lot in commission.
She did not want to go home but that did not mean that she did not want to make money.
When Chloe exited her email, she realized that she had forgotten to place the order and became flustered. What’s worse, she
saw Joseph emerge from the study.
He leaned against the door frame, calmly glancing in the direction of the stovetop, and asked, “Is the food ready?”
