Chapter Desperate Attempts
At the Blackwood pack, many pack members had gathered in the Packhouse waiting for their Alpha, Beta, and Luna.
There were mixed emotions all around. They were happy that their Alpha and Beta were back safe and none of the pack members had died in the war, but they were sad that their Luna had to sacrifice her wolf for that.
When Chris and Liam came back, the pack members were relieved to see them.
" Sorry for my earlier behavior, Alpha,” Dalton said apologetically.
" I understand and whatever you said is true,” Chris said sadly.
Dalton was surprised at Chris’s reaction. ” Luna...? How is she?” he asked, looking concerned.
" She is physically fine.”
" Why didn’t she come with you?” Maria asked Chris and Liam.
" Do you think she would come after what happened?” Liam replied.
" I expected better from you two,” Maria said in disappointment and left to her room, sobbing silently.
Chris and Liam couldn’t say anything and just stood there looking crestfallen.
Dalton decided to change the topic to lighten their mood. ” After Luna trapped Samara, many rogues tried to run away, fearing their lives. We have managed to kill most of them, but few got away.”
" What about the vampire?”
" He vanished the moment Samara was gone. He is a shapeshifter, so it’s challenging to get hold of him. Only Luna had managed to do it,” Dalton said, feeling proud of his Luna.
Chris and Liam looked confused, and Dalton explained what had happened earlier with Daniel.
One by one, the pack members explained all that transpired after Liam and Chris went missing.
Chris and Liam were shocked to see the changes in the Pack in the span of one week. The Pack members were in awe of Adele and were all praises for her.
Both Chris and Liam were proud of Adele, and after hearing what she had done for the Pack, they felt even more regretful of their actions.
" All the warriors are safe as the Luna wanted,” Dalton said proudly. ” I wish I could tell her that.”
" You can meet her at the Silverlake Pack,” Chris said.
" How is Trevor now?” Liam asked.
" He is resting in the hospital, and most of his injuries are healed.”
" How did he get injured?”
" Trevor was trying to get hold of Archer, and they fought,” Dalton said with disgust.
Chris was dumbfounded. ” Archer? He’s alive?”
" Yes, that traitor of a werewolf was assisting Samara from the start,” Dalton said, gritting his teeth.
Chris clenched his fist in anger. His whole demeanor suddenly changed. ” Where is he?” he growled.
" We couldn’t catch him as his pack members took him away. Trevor did a number on him, and Archer was seriously injured. I am sure he is still weak as he didn’t even have the healing potion.”
" Healing potion?” Liam asked, puzzled.
" Yes, the Luna had asked her friend Sera to make a healing potion for us. Thank’s to that, Trevor and our other warriors are all healed now,” Dalton said proudly.
" We were wrong about everyone,” Chris snarled, angry at himself. ” Every damn thing.”
" Get hold of that bastard,” Liam roared.
" I have already sent a team,” Dalton smirked.
The next day, Archer was caught in one of Samara’s hiding locations. Chris was so furious that he didn’t want to give him an easy death. He ordered Archer to be locked up in the torture room, and just like his father, Chris tortured him on a daily basis.
On the other hand, every other day, Chris and Liam went to the Silverlake pack to meet their babies and, of course, to try to convince Adele to get back. Adele didn’t even give an inch. She tried her best to avoid them, and even if, by chance, they met, she behaved as if they were invisible.
Chris and Liam thought their Karma was biting back harder. There was a time when they treated Adele as invisible, and now it was her turn.
Meanwhile, Adele’s condition was getting worse day by day. Physically she had gotten weak because she was not a werewolf anymore, and on top of that, mentally, Samara tortured her every day. Apart from the pain throughout the day, even her nights were filled with nightmares. Samara showed her different nightmares wherein she killed her, Alexa, Chris, Liam, kids, and her entire family and Pack. Adele would have gone insane by now if her determination to get Alexa back was not so strong.
Adele had turned the moonstone into a locket and wore it across her neck to serve as a reminder of what had to be done. Everyone suggested Adele hide the moonstone for the next three years, but she refused to part from Alexa. In Adele’s opinion, if Samara had the ability to harm the people outside the moonstone, then what would she do to Alexa, who was trapped with her inside? Since Alexa was alone, Adele couldn’t bear to abandon her, so even if she had to endure the pain, she would do it for her. Every day she spoke to Alexa through the stone and told her everything about the kids and whatever happened there. She encouraged Alexa to wait for her and stay strong. Adele often got a nasty response from Samara, but Alexa never answered her back. The only time Adele didn’t wear the locket was when she was with her kids because she didn’t want to risk them getting harmed by Samara.
A year passed by. It was the twin’s first birthday, and they had a small party at the Silverlake pack.
Chris couldn’t take his eyes off Adele as she was looking breathtaking in her sea-green-colored gown. She was wearing the same dress when Chris saw her for the first time at Axel’s wedding.
Chris and Liam had tried many things to earn Adele’s forgiveness for the past year. They apologized every other day, flirted with her, and tried to get her flowers and gifts, but nothing seemed to work out.
Chris had changed entirely. He had abandoned the teachings his Dad had ingrained in his mind. He was no more an arrogant Alpha and was always respectful towards women. Even his pack members’ mentality against women had changed. The women in Blackwood Pack were now allowed to train with the men, and a few even became warriors.
Liam, who was always silent and kept to himself, wouldn’t miss a chance to speak to his mate though Adele only replied curtly, mostly with single-word answers.
While Adele was playing with her twins, her mates approached her.
" Shall we go on a date tomorrow?” Liam asked in anticipation.
“No,” Adele said, keeping a blank face.
" Okay, I will ask next week,” Liam replied with a shrug.
" When will you stop asking?” Adele questioned, getting annoyed. For the past year, every week, Liam had been asking her on a date, and every time Adele said no.
" Until you agree to come,” Liam said casually.
" Have you no shame?”
" No.”
" Then shall we go shopping tomorrow?” Chris interrupted.
Adele scowled and said, ” Come on, we need to cut the cake.”
Adele seemed happy after a long time when she saw her babies smiling and running around. The twins had a special connection, and all their firsts seemed to happen simultaneously. They had their first tooth together; they felt hungry together; they said their first word ‘mama’ at the same time, and even started walking together when they were 11 months old.
The cake cutting ceremony was done, and Ian, Iris, and Darren were dancing on the Happy Birthday song with the other pack kids. Watching the kids play, even the elders felt happy.
When the twins were tired, Adele fed them and put them to sleep. She went back to her room and picked up her locket. She missed Alexa a lot and couldn’t stop the tears flowing from her eyes. She spoke to her, describing how she celebrated her pup’s first birthday.
Adele suddenly screamed when she felt pain in her head. Chris and Liam heard her and rushed into her room. Chris rubbed on Adele’s back while Liam held her hand in an attempt to ease her ache. Adele dug her nails on Liam’s arm while trying to control her breathing.
" Leave me alone; I can take care of myself,” she spat after she felt a bit better.
" But...you are in pain.”
“I am used to it now.”
" For heaven’s sake Adele, please hand over the moonstone,” Chris almost begged.
" No... Even if you ask me a thousand times more, my answer is no,” Adele said, gritting her teeth.
" But...”
“Leave...” Adele sneered.
" We don’t want to see you in misery,” Liam said helplessly.
" Please leave. I need to rest,” Adele whispered as she had no strength to argue anymore.
Chris and Liam were distraught and left without arguing anymore. When they returned home, they were in a foul mood.
" F**k!!! Chris exclaimed. ” I can’t see her in like this. How will she endure it for two more years?”
Liam was still not over the agonized expression on Adele’s face. ” Can’t we do anything to stop her pain?”
" There’s one way.” Lex, Liam’s wolf, spoke to him for the first time after that dreadful incident.
" What?” Liam gasped in shock.
" There’s one way we can ease our mate’s pain.”
