Immortals Of Byolla Bay

Chapter 31 – Kinsley

Wiping my eyes, I seen Maggie in front of me, “Come on, honey. Let’s stand up. We gotta go, now!” When did I fall on the ground?

Rikki was next to me in an instant and reached towards me warily like he was asking my if it was okay. When did he ever need permission to touch me? That’s when our drunken conversation came back to me. Oh no.

I was angry at him because I thought he wasn’t listening to me. But I still need to find Meshella. My irresponsibility by being inebriated probably just put everyone at risk because for some reason I just wanted to be a drama queen and now Drakkar is here in his evil beast form. I couldn’t see anything, but drunk party goers running and stumbling around trying to get away.

In the middle of all the chaos were Gene, Keri and Ty spread out, with a protective posture, looking vigilant. I grabbed Rikki, who looked relieved, and he scooped me up in his arms. “Alright, let’s get you home. I promise I will find Meshella as soon as I get you to safety.” There was a growl behind us and before I knew what was happening I was being thrown from Rikki’s arms into Maggie’s just as a giant black wolf-like creature with red and black dust swirling around him, jumped onto Rikki’s back, pinning him to the ground.

Rikki reached behind him and grabbed it’s paw, throwing it across the clearing. Rikki jumped to his feet, “Run Maggie!” As fast as the wind we took off. Maggie carried me as if I weighed nothing and dodged through the trees as if they were blades of grass.

“No! You can’t have her, dammit!” Maggie screamed as she skidded to a stop and quickly slung me around on her back. I looked up. Another wolf had blocked our path and was stalking towards us.

“Kinsley, listen to me. I need you to run. Get out of here, no matter what you see or hear, do NOT stop running. You must escape. Go. Now!”

Her voice was trembling when she spoke. How could she possibly take on this thing? I shook my head. I couldn’t leave her.

“I can take him, don’t worry. You have to go, though. Now get out of here. Now!”

Before I ran away, I looked back to see something that made me stumble. That wolf was looking at me. It looked just like the one that attacked Rikki, but it’s eyes were what caught my attention. They were sky blue. The same color as the ring Rikki gave me and also the exact color of my eyes.

Making myself look away, I took off running as fast as I could. The sounds of a scuffle echoed in my ears with each step I took. I soon realized I was running back towards the clearing because the growls were louder along with the screams of my classmates still trying to find their escape from the beasts. Being drunk and scared don’t mix in a situation like this apparently. Maybe I can find Rikki.

When I thought of Rikki, I remembered what I said to him before the wolves made themselves known. Oh no, for the love of all that’s holy please don’t let that be the last thing I ever get to say to him. There wasn’t an I love you, no I miss you. No. Just my stupid ass telling him to leave me alone.

I have got to find him. I need to tell him what he means to me. Rikki, where are you? The familiar pang of being away from him kicked inconveniently in as I burst into the clearing. The only people I seen were kids screaming and running still, with growling coming up quickly behind me.

“Run! This way!” I scream. Thankfully most followed me into the other edge of the clearing. I had to keep my wits about me because I knew I was getting close to the edge of the cliffs. The last two months of my life started flashing before me, like my brain knew something my body didn’t.

Even though I was running for my life at the moment, I couldn’t bring myself to regret meeting him that night. If I hadn’t have gone to Meshella’s birthday bonfire my life would have been normal, gone to college, got my heart broken a few times, graduated eventually and lived the rest of my life totally clueless that we share our world with creatures that are coincidentally chasing me right now. I was like all the rest only thinking the supernatural existed in fiction books you could check out from the library, astonishingly ignorant to the signs that humans were not the only species on the planet that were like us. It’s too late to dwell on the past even if I regretted meeting that 6 foot 3, blonde haired and green eyed man who haunts my dreams. I should be focusing on pushing past the burning pain in my legs and lungs and not slowing down, but I can’t help it. I’m only human. Ha Ha. That joke is only funny when he says it to me I guess.

I started lagging behind everyone else and I knew I was going to get caught. Running was never my strong suit. I was going to die before I could even see his breathtaking face again. No, I have to still try.

I slipped on an uneven patch of dirt by the cliff and it gave way. The last thing I remember is hearing snarling from somewhere above me, then my world went black. Please don’t let me die before I can tell him how sorry I am.
