Heavenly Creatures

Chapter CHAPTER 5: Incorporeal

My existential dread had been right, of course. I was often right about people. Call it a blessing or a curse.

Sun carried me—or maybe it was my body—to a recliner and laid me down. Then, he looked up to where I was and smiled sheepishly.

“Sorry,” he said.

How could he see me?!

“I’m not who I seem,” Sun said. There was a beat. “But you already knew that, didn’t you?”

What did he mean by that?

“I saw you at the bridge.”

But… I got away before you looked up!

“I don’t see with my eyes,” Sun scoffed. “As you can see.”

Eyes. For some reason, I could sense Sun’s thoughts with my non-physical body. And he seemed to get caught up in the word ‘eyes.’

What about eyes?

“Your eyes,” Sun said. “Why are they closed?”

If I could have rolled my eyes, I would have.

Well, genius, I’m lying there. I fainted.

“No,” Sun said. “That’s not what I mean. I mean, the real reason I wanted to partner with you is, I need help.”

Intriguing. What did he need help with?

“I’m stuck here, in the in-between.”

The “in-between”?

“On Earth,” Sun said.

Oh. Was Sun an alien?

Sun laughed. “No, I’m from heaven.”

Crazier and crazier by the minute.

“But then again, dragons know all about heaven, don’t they?”

Okay, what was this about dragons again?

“Dragons are from heaven. Or they’re all about ascending to heaven.”

And therefore…?

“You’re a dragon,” Sun said, tone exasperated.

I—or my incorporeal spirit—laughed for a full two minutes.

“Come on,” Sun said. “The old man and his cronies are keeping me down here, making me go to this school, for what? I’m sure they wanted me to meet you, a dragon.”

Har, har. Wait, what?

“I was pretty surprised to see you. Which reminds me to ask, what’s your story? Now that you know mine.”

I was beginning to get an ethereal headache. The funny thing was, I had found all this semi-normal until I started feeling a weird coldness shooting throughout my body, form, whatever.

“Let’s get you back into your body,” Sun said. “It’s not good to be in the astral plane for too long. Things might possess your corporeal form.”

Wait, what?

“Here we go,” Sun said. “Easy does it.”
