Chapter 12 – Oakley

Chapter 12 – Oakley

Mary literally squeals. “We’re roomies!”

Holding my ears until she’s done squealing. I respond, “Yeah. Maybe tone it down a few octaves though?”

Mary giggles, “Sorry. I’m just really excited. I really like you guys and Oakley actually got Jer ry to open up. He’s so in his shell all the time. I just…I think that we’re going to be such good friends!” She pulls both me and Cassie into a hug, something that I’m not used to at all.

I’ve never really had friends since I got my wolf two years ago. They all shunned me when they realized how weak I was. I didn’t realize how much I missed it. The camaraderie. The easy hugs and touching that happens when you have girl friends or friends at all.

asks.

When we pull back from each other, we’re looking around for the fourth member of our room, but we can’t find Lisa.

“Is this Lisa chick the one that I fought earlier?” I ask as we head back to the courtyard to grab our luggage.

“Oh, no! Goddess, I hope not. She was a real bit ch. What was her deal with coming after you like that in tryouts?” Cassie

I

I just shrug. “No idea. I’ve never set eyes on the girl until today. I was just as surprised as you were, but I also wasn’t going

to back down. She was lucky that Ray stopped her. Had she kept coming, she would have seen what my wolf and I can do.” Ok,

that might have been talking a big game a bit. I haven’t really gotten to take my new wolf out for a test drive yet. But I

already feel the change in my senses, strength, and reflexes. It’s just a feeling I get, but I was supposed to be a luna until my

alpha mate turned out to be an as shole. I’m meant to be strong as f uck and I think I could take her.

“Wait, what happened?” Mary asks, confused.

“While we were at the sword station, I was fighting Lisa. She got pis sed that I disarmed her and tried to continue fighting me. Ray, the assistant trainer, had to pull her off of me.” I relay.

“What’s her problem, then?” Je rry asks, sneaking up behind us.

“Dude, what’s your problem? Why the hell would you sneak up on us like that?” Mary screams, turning around and smacking

her brother on the arm and across the back of his head.

“Hey! Not my fault you were too into the conversation to pay attention! Oakley heard me, didn’t you, Oaks?” Je rry says, indignant with his sister’s treatment of him.

“For one, yes, I heard you. For two, don’t call me that.” I make sure to look him in the eye, raising an eyebrow to make sure

he gets it.

*Fine,” he says, hands up as if surrendering. “Not, Oaks. How about Ley?”

“How about Oakley?” I say, giving him a tight smile. I hate nicknames. Some people, like Cassie, have natural nicknames. Sam for Samantha. Nikki for Nicole. They are sweet, shortened versions of their names that make you feel closer to the person. But there are people like me, who do not have nice, sweet sounding nicknames. You either call me a tree or sound like you’re trying to get into my pants. Nope. Nicknames are not for me.

Je rry looks at me, a smile tugging on his l*ps. “Oh, I’ll find a nickname that you’ll like. I’m going to make it my little pet

project.”

“Oh, sh it. You’re in trouble now. Anything that becomes his pet project is an obsession until he meets his objective. You might as well just give up now, Mary says and she truly seems like she’s trying to warn me.

“Sounds like it’s a problem for him. He said that it had to be a nickname that I like. Problem for him is that I hate any nickname anyone has ever come up with for me. To the point that I refused to speak to my brother for a whole week when he tried to nickname me Oakie. An entire week. And he was my favorite person. My best friend.” I walk up to Jer ry, looking him straight in the eye and giving him a smile, though I’m still addressing Mary. “Though I very much like Jer ry, I barely know him. Just think of the things that I’d do to him.”

With those last words, I bop J erry on the nose and turn away. Cassie is giggling at Je rry’s face, a mix of awe and determination.

We grab our bags and walk back towards the castle. Turns out that Je rry’s room is right across the hall from ours. He carried his and Mary’s luggage and even attempted to take mine, too, though I refused.

“Well, what the hell am I? Chopped liver?” Cassie indignantly asks.

He looks Cassie up and down, a leer showing on his face. “A da mn se xy piece of chopped liver. One that can easily care for herself and would definitely be pis sed if I insinuated that she was weak by taking her bag”

With that, he walks on ahead of us.

Cassie smiles broadly: “I think that I’m a bit flattered…and turned on.”

I laugh loudly, thinking that the two of them would make a good match. It’s a shame that they aren’t mates. They would have figured it out the second that we opened the door in the parking lot this morning.

We finally make it to our bedroom only to find my sword fighting friend Lisa is our roommate. Oh goody!

“Ugh! You? Really? What on the Goddess’s green earth have I done to deserve this?” she whines.

“You?!” Cassie says incredulously “You’re the one that attacked her, not the other way around.”

“She f ucked me up in front of the trainers! She nearly made me lose my spot! This is my destiny and I nearly lost it because

of that blonde bit ch!” Lisa is up and moving across the room, her face a mask of fury

Cassie drops her suitcase on the empty bed beside her and then gets right up in Lisa’s face. “What the f uck is your problem? Several people were disarmed during that and they made it through. The same thing happened with you. You didn’t nearly lose your spot because of her, but you might have if that assistant trainer hadn’t pulled you off. Sounds like you caused

the problem.”

I’m quite surprised, not just of Lisa’s accusation, but of Cassie’s protectiveness of me. And she seems extremely pis sed.

“Hey Cassie?” I wedge myself between her and Lisa. “I got this.” To Lisa, I say, “You got a problem with me, you come to me. You don’t mess with my friends, you don’t b itch and moan about your bad luck. You come to me, got it?”

“Oh, I got it.” With that, Lisa pulls back, attempting to punch me in the face.

And that’s when my wolf takes over. I had no idea that I could move that fast, having never had were speed before. But suddenly, I’m behind her, her fist in my hand and me holding her arm behind her back. I think I’m as shocked as everyone else, but I don’t let it make me move my position. She wants to take a swing at me, there will be consequences.

“I don’t know what problem you have with me, Lisa. Honestly, I don’t care. What I do care about is that you back the f uck off and leave me alone.” I spin her round and push her towards her bed. “And I have the feeling, with that temper of yours, you won’t be here for long.”

With that, I grab my suitcase, toss it on the bed fa rthest from Lisa and stalk out the door.
