Domenic’s voice was soft and soothing, gently easing Lindsey’s worn-out nerves.

Just then, the doctor behind them chimed in, “You’re lucky things turned out this way, considering the circumstances.

It’s good she was rescued just in time.

You’re a determined daughter, her life’s safe thanks to you.

Domenic felt a dull ache in his chest at those words.

What if he had insisted Lindsey wait for the firefighters? Would he have been responsible for her mother’s death?

The thought sent another sharp pain through Domenic’s head.

Without Sumner’s timely help, she and her mom might not have made it out of the fire.

“Linds, where have you been?” Sumner assisted Lindsey to sit by the bed, his gaze fixed on Domenic with irritation.

“She’s just come to and isn’t fully back to herself yet.

How could you think of taking her out?”

Lindsey reached for Sumner’s arm and explained, “Sumner, don’t blame him.

I chose to go see my mom.

“You… you saw your mom?” Sumner was taken aback.

He had been aware of this sad news for some time but hadn’t shared it with Lindsey, fearing it would upset her.
