He Is Not Alone

Chapter 6

The following Monday morning Special Agent John Washington is assigned to look into Will Smythe. He is given the information they have and contacts the police chiefs.

Agent John Washington is a tall black man about 6 feet tall and 250 lbs. His hair is short and keeps his beard trimmed. To see him on the street you would think he is a big teddy bear. His friends find him to be humble and a great guy to have around. His enemies find him to be more like a bloodhound.

“Chief Johnson, this is Special Agent Washington, from the Philadelphia office of the FBI. How are you this morning?”

“Fine, Agent Washington. What can I do for you this fine day?”

“Chief, I have been assigned to look into an individual that your department came across last week. A Will Smythe, he was evolved with an attempted robbery by a young gang member. It seems he was able to disarm the guy and make him sit down until your officers arrived. Then at the police station, one of your lieutenants wanted to keep him in custody. Can you explain what happened and why he was going to be arrested?”

“Well, there isn’t a lot more to tell you that you don’t already know. Mr. Smythe has not been in any trouble. He lost his wife a while back in a terrible car accident and he was in a coma for a few months. This incident is the first time we have had any interaction with him. Not even a parking ticket. It seemed that he put on a demonstration at the station showing my officers how he was able to convince the young man to put down the gun. He actually demonstrated it using one of my officers. The young man was made to take out his gun, unload it, sit down and whistle a song. Then at the station, it seems that there was some concern for his ability and how we could prevent him from using it against us. My lieutenant, sergeant, and one other officer wherein the hallway and Mr. Smythe were in the interrogation room with several other officers. Mr. Smythe then relayed what they were talking about until he ‘heard’ that they were going to hold him. It seems at that point, he lawyered up. The lieutenant wasn’t going to let him call a lawyer as he wasn’t under arrest. He was going to be held in protective custody until the morning. Mr. Smythe had other ideas apparently and changed the lieutenant mind about the lawyer. His lawyer showed up about 30 minutes after the phone call and we had to let him go.”

“Any idea how Mr. Smythe was able to perform these tricks?”

“Oh, they were no tricks. He has the ability to read minds and place thoughts or actions into the minds of those he is around. He has proven it several times with different people.”

“Thanks, Chief. If I find anything that you folks need to know, I call you. Goodbye.”

Agent Washington had a difficult time believing the chief. But onto the next call.

“Detective Benson, this is Agent Washington from the Philadelphia office of the FBI. How are you today?”

“Fine, Agent Washington, what’s up?”

“I am investigating Mr. William Smythe. You had some interaction with him a while back, dealing with a murder investigation. Can you tell me what that was all about?”

“Will was involved with a bomb plot at 30th Street Station. He helped stop it. During the investigation, he demonstrated the ability to read minds. He also offered to help us whenever we needed it. When this murder case came up, the suspects weren’t talking and had a high-priced lawyer that wouldn’t let them talk to us. We called in Will, to see if he could get anything for us to work on. Turns out that the young kid saw it all, but the lawyer wouldn’t let him talk. Will stated that the kid knew and wanted to talk, but the lawyer wouldn’t let him. I walked back to the interrogation room and the lawyer immediately told us the kid wanted to talk. We took the statement along with other information and let them go. Turns out that Mr. Smythe had “told” the lawyer to let the kid talk. They weren’t in the room with each other, no phone or contact in any way. But somehow he did it.”

“Are you sure Mr. Smythe changed the lawyers mind?”

“Will has been 100 percent upfront with us. He has done everything he can to show us what he can do. I have no doubt that he can and does read minds and changes them. In fact, I talked to our chief about what we can do to make sure he is on our side and not against us in any way. His capabilities cannot be used against us or for the crime. We would never be able to stop him or bring him to justice. His death is our only defense.”

“That is a pretty bold statement.”

“You haven’t met him yet. Be prepared and don’t try and hide anything from him.”

“Thanks.”

Agent Washington was intrigued and concerned. He would have to meet Mr. Smythe for himself and no time like the present.

The weekend is over. Things aren’t going well with Daisy. She is full of questions and anger. We spent the weekend sightseeing in the city. Every time I started a conversation, her thoughts would turn to “why he won’t tell me what happened to land him in jail”. Finally, Sunday afternoon, I told her that I can read minds and change people’s thoughts. She blew up, accusing me of invasion of privacy. Telling me I had no right to read people’s minds, let alone change them. She wanted to know if I used my powers on her. Even after telling her that I didn’t, she refused to listen. She made it pretty clear that I am not supposed to see her or Misty anymore. She would find another sitter for the dog.

I have to say that I am glad. It was so hard not to read her mind. I wanted to make sure she was happy and in the end, it still didn’t work out. So today starts another chapter in my life.

Butch and I head out to the park for someone on one time.

“Come on Butch, let’s go for a walk!” Butch is so excited to have me back. I must admit that I was spending too much time away from him. We head to the dog park.

“Go ahead Butch, runoff, and play. It has been a while since you have had time to play here.”

“What’s that matter boy, why don’t you go play?” Butch is on alert! Butch is sitting next to me looking at a fellow a couple of benches down reading a paper. I notice that Butch isn’t comfortable with the man.

As I look at the fellow, I begin to sense his thoughts. He is trying to test me. “Mr. Smythe, please come talk to me.”

This is the first time someone has actually tried to make contact with me. He knows or at least suspects that I can read minds and is testing me. Fine, two can play this game.

”Put down the paper and remove your tie.” I think. He does just that, the paper falls to the ground and he takes off his tie, but his expression is of confusion. He doesn’t understand why he just did that, time to see what he wants.

“Hello, my name is Will Smythe; you wanted to talk to me?”

“So, it is true, you can read minds!”

“Yes, but you already suspected that. Who are you? OH, FBI! What do you want with me?”

“Please, don’t be alarmed. You are not under arrest or anything.”

“I am pretty sure you couldn’t arrest me if you wanted to. What do you want from me? How did you find out about me?”

“Your name came up in several recent reports from the local police departments. Your abilities are interesting and we wanted to find out more about you and them. So, this little test was to see if they were in fact true.”

“Did I pass?”

“I must say that I was very skeptical of your abilities. This is the first time I have ever met someone like you. I am not sure what else to say. Why did I remove my tie?”

“Butch sensed that you were in some way interested in me. He was very concerned about you. When I sensed that he was uncomfortable and saw why I told you to put down the paper and remove your tie. The combination of the two was the signal to come talk to you. I knew I could control the situation if I needed to. So, what do you want with me?”

“I would like to know what exactly you can do and would you be willing to work with us for the good of the Country?”

“Honestly, I am not sure exactly what I am capable of yet. It seems that over time I can do more and more. It started out by being able to understand animals. Then I was able to tell them what I wanted them to do. Then I found out that I could understand people. Lately, I can have those that I target, do simple things. I haven’t tried anything complicated or that would go against their will or hurt them in any way. How could I help the FBI?”

“Well, you helped the police departments a couple of times and the FBI isn’t much different in our needs. Perhaps we can help you develop your capabilities and you could help us find terrorists and others who want to do us harm. Would you consider that?”

“Well, I woke up this morning and said that this was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Guess this is a start.”

“Great! I have no idea yet how this is going to work. I have to talk to my boss and I am sure Washington will get involved. Let me get started on my end. I will call you when I have more information. Is that okay?”

“Sure.”

“Thanks, Mr. Smythe for being so understanding. Your capabilities can be a great help to this Country.”

“Call me Will and you’re welcome, I guess.”
