Chapter 7 ~That Explains a Lot
Adrianna’s POV ~
I had gotten Daddy to the outside, laying him carefully on the ground. Checking his eyes.. his heart. His veins were showing through his skin. Dark purple.. which indicated they had injected him with elf DNA.
Evander walked out with two of his men.. arms ladened with the information I asked him to gather. He knelt beside me and asked “How is he?” I shrugged and said “He’s poisoned.. Elf DNA is toxic to a wolf. I am not sure how I survived it.. but I have to get Daddy home. I have to get him to the Lake. Please, Evander? It’s his only chance.”
He turned to Ronald and said “You! You and your men will stay here and see to the destruction of this facility.. my men will stay and observe. If you shirk your duty.. if you do not do as I ordered, you and your little troop of merry men will answer to me!”
Evander shifted into Argon.. and Basil, Evander’s warrior, secured my father to his back and I climbed up, behind him. Within the hour, he was landing in our clearing.. and Zander raced to greet us.
Helping me get Daddy down from Argon’s back.. we laid him in the grass. We removed his clothing, and Zander and I stripped to our underwear. We carried him into the Lake and I submerged his body.. dropping his head beneath the water for several seconds.
I chanted lowly “Mother Moon.. hear my plea.. This can’t be his eternity.. By your guidance and your grace.. allow me to gaze upon his face… Heal his body and his soul.. Once again, make him whole.”
As I finished, Zander chanted the same. I submerged Daddy’s head again.. holding several seconds.. then began again. We had performed the ritual three times, before the Lake began to glow.. and a Moonbeam shot from the heavens, directly into my father’s chest.
He gasped and as his eyes opened.. he smiled at my brother and me. He whispered “My precious girl! I knew you’d come!” I broke down in tears and held him to me tightly. My daddy is okay.. And that’s all that mattered, in that moment.
Evander glanced around and saw the entire pack had gathered in the dawn’s light. All of them had tears and all he could think is “Hypocrites!” He said “Disperse! My Luna has done what none of you attempted! Your Alpha is returned.. no thanks to you!”
Evander started to walk into the water to carry Abram to the infirmary.. and I said “Stop, babe! The Lake will burn you, if one of us is not touching you! Only our bloodline can walk into her, safely. It is the Goddess’s design. We are the keepers.”
Zander and I brought Abram out and Evander lifted him in his arms, while they dressed. We all walked to the infirmary together.. as we neared, I heard the dragons approaching. I smiled and said “Our people have returned.” Evander nodded, grinning at me.
Doc examined Daddy.. letting me know he would be okay.. I hugged Zander, as he wept softly, repeatedly telling me thank you. For as grown up as he acts, he is still my little brother.
Once I knew Daddy was settled.. Evander and I went to my room. I am getting used to having him near me. I’ve found it’s a feeling I quite enjoy. After a shower, we sat beside each other on my sofa. He said “You really are something! You killed those three men in less than ten seconds. I am impressed with your speed and dexterity.”
I smiled and said “The humans tried to weaponize me. They wanted me to be a killing machine for their military. What they don’t realize is the fairy side of that, doesn’t allow me to kill without provocation.”
He shook his head.. “It angers me beyond reason when I think of what you must have endured. Tell me about the Lake, my love.”
I grinned “Ah yes! The Lake. We are the Keepers of the Lake. Our bloodline was blessed three centuries ago.. although our family have been the Keepers for millennia. Shifters believed they could simply use the Lake’s water to heal.. they would come from all over. Stealing her waters.. bathing in Her depths.. some even believed it would keep them young. They polluted and contaminated Her shores.. the water itself. The Goddess decided she had had enough of greedy people taking advantage of her beneficence. She blessed only our bloodline to be able to touch Her waters.. and those we lead to the Lake for healing. Our dedication was rewarded.”
He pulled me into his lap.. kissing my forehead.. he said “That explains a lot!”
