Chapter 47

Chapter 47: Humbled Sister

*Riley*

Looking at Ava now, I saw nothing of the sister who was riding my boyfriend and looking at me smugly. This Ava looked small, not just in her physical size but her demeanor also. She crossed her arms as she stared at me. Her expression was hard to read, but it could be because it looked so foreign to me. She wore no makeup, her brows had grown out from their thin curves that always made her look p**d and her lips weren’t painted the brightest shade of red.

Glancing down at her clothes, it sight was even less impressive. The old A

could have worn a wool bag and somehow made it look like the highest of fashion, but now her clothes hung from her skin and bones. I think she noticed me looking and quickly finished her cigarette. I hadn’t realized she had gone back to smoking.

She crossed her arms over her thinning body and faced.

“Why did you come back?” she hissed. I just stared at her for a minute in awe. Her tone would have sent shivers down my whole body before, and now she sounded lost.

I didn’t answer, seeing as my presence here could easily be answered by the death of our father, which she didn’t seem to be torn up about.

“Ava, what happened?” I asked. She knew what I was talking about. She sucked her teeth and then waved her hand up and down the length of me.

“You. You happened,” she wailed, her eyes blood red with rage and pain. She quickly wipes the single tear from her face and continues. “You left the Evermane pack and out of spite for your ‘poor treatment’, we were left fending for ourselves,” she vented, the tone I had grown up with slightly returning.

I couldn’t help but catch her phrase of ‘poor treatment’, that seemed like an understatement but I kept quiet, she looked like she had more to

say.

“Our finances went out the window. Daddy tried to help Noah, but looking at him only made him mad. He was the alpha because his father was killed for not producing you. After all, you ran away!” She yelled, her emotions peaking.

She had left out the reason I ran, but unknown to her, I had come to terms with what happened, funny how love heals.

“I don’t understand how my leaving with the Lycan King caused this. No one here even liked me; I wouldn’t be missed by anyone but Liam.” I pointed out. She frowned at me, her lips quivering as she gathered her thoughts. I hadn’t come here for a confrontation, but I wouldn’t take the full blame. How easily she forgot what was done to me here.

“And Noah wants nothing to do with me,” she snarled. “I tried to be his

Luna, I did, but he didn’t want me. At first, I thought it was all the stress he was under. He lost his father, then quickly after he became Alpha, and with his title and the issues surrounding you, he lost the support of the king, but it was none of those, it was because he lost. you, Riley. My mate hurts because he hurt you,” her bravado was gone. She dropped to her knees her s s taking over. Caving in on herself she continued her testament.

“Father basically called me useless for being unable to help the new Alpha and though I wasn’t his pride and joy growing up, he always seemed fond of me. Losing favor with him was the tipping of the scales. My world was crashing down around me,” she looked up at me, tears streaming down her face. She grabbed her chest, where her heart.

was.

“I asked Noah to reject me, but though he wanted nothing to do with me, he also couldn’t be bothered to release me. When he sees me, he sees me taunting you, hurting you and now Riley, I hurt, I hurt constantly,” she started shaking, hitting her chest repeatedly as her sobbing returned.

I felt my body lean towards her. With her head bowed, overcome with emotions I feel sorry for her. So much that I wanted to comfort her, but I hesitated. She and I weren’t close once we discovered I had no wolf. It seemed like that fact drove us apart and she saw herself as my better rather than my sister. I’m sure the shock of the Lycan King picking met to be his Luna was a blow she hadn’t prepared for.

Still, I had scars too, and it was only now that I was able to heal from them. I didn’t want to hold a grudge against my sister. She and Liam were my family and though I now had Nicolas, if I didn’t have to, I don’

t want to leave them behind. I had never felt at home in Evermane, but

seeing all the death brought on by the hunters and perhaps even now being the Luna. I couldn’t dismiss them, and that included my sister. I was just about to comfort her when she reached up and grabbed my hand.

“Are you here to take him back? Are you here for my Noah? Please don’t take him. though he has yet to reject me, I am still his mate, and I still feel him. Refuse him. for me.” she wailed.

I fought from rolling my eyes. Though I felt sorry for her, she still thinks highly of herself or her mate to think I would ever take him. back. It was only because we had just lost our father that I had been willing to talk with her. Take him back?

I pulled my hand from hers, the touch awkward seeing as we never touched before. I stared down at my elder sister and knew I could not be as cruel to her as she was to me. I had to put that in the past.

Noah broke my heart, not just because he took a mate, but with my sister. It was a blow that left me breathless and if Nicolas had never found me, would it be me crying on the ground, half of who I was? Seeing how he has left my sister, refusing to reject her, I could confidently say I would never take him back.
