Chapter 3.
He is staring at me very hard in a very intimidating way. He made no sudden movements. I suddenly start to experience a strange urge to lower my head down in dutiful submission. Instead in one brief instant, I step in closer to him fiercely resisting. I don’t recognize this man, yet he knew me? For a long time, we both stayed silent. His expression now in wonder and more of an admiration, “I guess your mother hadn’t found the time to inform you who I am?”
Confused about what he means by that “No. I guess she hasn’t.”
I’m aware that my tone sounds curt, but I just can’t seem to brush off this voice that’s telling me to stand firm. We are equal. Strange because this man can be closer to my dad’s age or even older. Mr.Heights is undeniably handsome, shining amber golden eyes, tall and buffed like my father. I was taught to always respect elders.
Consequently, you can only imagine to my surprise as to why my inner voice, though somewhat firmly suggesting that we are nothing but equal here. In my peripheral vision, I could see Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Adams seem to not know just how to act to this encounter.
After a considerable time, he breaks the silence. Bursting into laughter that pours from his throat in rich, mellow peals with a flash of his pearly teeth through a long beard. He extends his right hand out for a handshake.
“There’s no doubt that you are your mother’s daughter. A Moons for sure.”
“Moons.” Mrs.Stones and Mrs. Adams barked.
“Ahhh but you don’t grasp the name that you carry do you?” I thought maybe I’m imagining this but his eyes glow golden for a split second after shaking my hand.
Ultimately, he gently opens the door and left the office. Mrs.Adams gives me an insincere smile, “ Ms. Moons please come and sit down. Mrs. Stones that will be all. Much appreciated.”
“Ānanda.”
“Pardon?”
“aːˈnənd̪” slowly pronouncing my last name.
“Uh. um….. er Right, Ms. Ānanda” Lost for her words she took my file that Mrs. Stones left on her desk and sat down. For a long space, we were silent as she goes over my file. She seems impressed with what she recites through “From what I anticipate here you are a promising student; test scores are beyond satisfaction and you are exceedingly active on extra circular activities.”
“Tell me...” she said while her slender lip forms a partial smile.
“Azah, who do you wish to become?”
Well, shit. fuck sake! “I genuinely don’t have the answer to that just yet Mrs. Adams.”
She leans forward and crosses her dainty hands together. “Fair enough. I called in for a student to show you around the school; she has similar classes as you. Also, Ms. Ānanda it’s a rare pleasure to finally have met you.”Mrs. Adam stands up from her chair and graciously gives me a similar bow that Mrs.Stones gave to Mr.Height.
This place is unusual, I left her office and waited attentively for the student that will guide me throughout the day. Quietly praying that they aren’t snobbish and annoying.
A girl came forward and she is drop-dead gorgeous. Round face with smouldering doe-brown eyes, with a coarse afro that is full, and thick. Her skin is copper-brown like windfall autumn leaves with a queenly figure. She introduces herself in a bubbly and engaging manner “ Hi my name is Aïssatou.”I’m beginning to like her“My name is Azah.”
“I like the name, let me check your schedule.”
I handed her my schedule, and we have 1st, 2nd, and 4th periods together. Aïssatou is easy to get along with, we clicked in an instant. At random she would ask about my interest in music, hobby, and shows I like watching. We had many things in common.
“We have about 10 minutes left before 1st-period class,” Aïssatou said looking at her phone while leading to the common space called Lune circle.
The lune circle is like a massive common space practically covering the third floor. In the centre, there is a large circular curved sectional sofa. The area is surrounded by huge glass windows, showing the overview of the beautiful front school. With dark green walls with multiple lounge chairs and desks. The ample space was grand and inviting. To no surprise, the building occupies five floors.
“No one goes to the 5th floor though, unless you have a class there.” Aïssatou shrugged while sitting down.
“Why?”
“Um… There are different types of classes that the 5th floor has.”
“Don’t you have a class there for your 6th period?” I asked curiously. I noticed how she would shift uncomfortably, quivering her lips while she spoke “It’s really nothing.”
“Oh.” I just met her today so I didn’t want to pressure her into answering something she wasn’t comfortable in telling me. The bell rang, and Aïssatou and I walk to our 1st-period class. I didn’t realize how anxious I was to start the day here till I enter the class. The class went by fast, only one teacher Mrs. Sammuels had me stand up in class and introduce myself.
Apparently, the whole school has the same lunch period. The cafeteria is vast in size, with many chattering amongst one another. The food is divided into sections between strictly vegan, vegetarian and meat lovers. A blue swirl border around the plates and the silverware were elegantly wrapped in a cloth. Aïssatou came from behind me and locked arms with me after waving to two girls, “ Let’s go!”
Aïssatou begins introducing me to them while I sit down next to one of the girls. The two girls were identical twins, though identical you could tell them apart by their choice of styling. Both have a diamond shape face with a peach and cream skin tone, sea-green eyes and strawberry blond hair. Sara’s hair is short bob curls and she is a bit curvier than her twin Sophia. While Sophia’s hair is at hip length and bone straight. However, she’s an inch or two taller than her sister Sara and has more of an athletic body. It didn’t feel awkward being around them; they include me in their conversation and filled me into the latest school’s gist.
“OMG Aïssatou, are you going to the Blue Moon?” Sara asked.
“Do you even have to ask, I wouldn’t miss it!”
Curious to know I questioned “Blue Moon?”
The girls looked at each other before Sara answered. “It is like this event for umm… all students and other students from around the country. If that makes sense?”
“Not helpful Sara. Azah. Look to make it easier for you to understand. Think of it like Olympics, where packs… uhh I mean schools from across the country compete against each other.” Sophia informed.
“Sophia. You forgot about the ball. OH AZAH! It’s like the best thing ever. So romantic and if your lucky you can meet your maat… umm I mean the love of your life.” Sara said with a high-pitched voice.
Aïssatou starts to giggle, she probably saw my face in horror when Sara worded “love of your life.”She lost me there.
“Cool, got it.” So it almost sounds like a prom just more schools will be involved.
“I’m designing and making the girl’s dresses, Azah let me do yours too,” Sara suggested.
“I actually love that, thanks, Sara.”
“You won’t be disappointed” she winked.
A guy approaches our table and sits next to me.
“Hi, Michael” Sophia blushed in pink while greeting him. Wishing that I could switch seats so she can be closer to him.
“Hello, beauties.” Flashing a playboy smile that came with killer dimples on both sides. I would’ve instantly had a crush on him if I wasn’t already aware that Sophia had a crush on him. Honestly, I can’t blame her too, he is FINNNEE. I mean the GQ front cover FIINNE.
How fine? He has a beautiful bronze-tone body, the light blue polo shirt hugging his chest and biceps. Neat rows of braids along his scalp tied up into a man bun with a side fade cut. Averting my eyes quickly before I start drooling. Christ! Almost everyone I see here is hella attractive.
“New here uh, what’s your name?” He asked.
“Yeah. I’m Azah.”
“Azah” The sound of his voice as he perfectly pronounces my name was intoxicating. I need to focus because what I’m not about to do is be in a love triangle or whatever you may call it. Michael is a very laid-back kind of guy. As the girls were talking, we began talking about basketball and previous games.
The conversation progressed in joking about memes and tweets we saw online. Our loud waves of laughter echoed not minding who sees or hears us. He is weird and corny, and I am weird and corny, so he got my jokes and got his. We were practically in tears placing hands on our stomachs from the ache of laughing too frequently. Everything was just all jokes. This moment reminded me of my brother and me.
“What’s so funny?” Sophia narrowed her lips. Feeling bad because I knew what this looked like to someone else. I only just met Michael and all of a sudden we are best buddies. I just hope Sophia isn’t the jealous type to allow something like this to come between us.
“Ahh, Man! Ayyo, this girl is funny funny.”
“Like where have you been?”
To not make shit any more awkward I answered “ We were talking Katt Williams iconic phrases.”
“Oh. Don’t know him.”Sophia blushed looking disappointed.
“COME ON Sophs! You honestly don’t know Katt Williams. Oh, babez we gotta watch his kits sometimes.”
“Yeah Sophia, he’s too funny. Watch it with Michael soon. ” Thankful that Sophia isn’t in a foul mood anymore. Now more invest in our conversation. Michael asks the usual get-to-know someone questions. I briefed him about my and dad’s decision on moving here during my last year and how I’m still trying to adjust and cope with their decision.
“What did you say your last name was?” Michael asks, his face now more serious.
“Ānanda” Curious as to why my last name matters.
“That’s your mom’s or dad’s?”
“We were given our dad’s last name, my mom kept hers. She’s Eos Moons.”
Everyone around the table fell into silence. All eyes were on me. Jaws dropped, and mouths opened. However, Michael retains no expression upon his face and stares with his bliss-blue eyes. Leaning forward he gave me a scrutiny look, noticing his central heterochromia eyes shade gold around the border of his pupil. Feeling uncomfortable as his gaze went down to my neck. Is he starting at my neck?
“I’m sorry I must’ve heard that wrong, what?” Sara said in shock.
I’m confounded by the reaction and their sudden interest in my family’s last name “Which part?”
“The part where you mention about your mom,” Sara answered.
Michael decisively breaks his silence and gazes at me “ Eos Moons? Interesting.”
That is all he had to say. They were all acting weird around me. Uncomfortable with the situation I monitored the time and decided to excuse myself first before the bell rang for 4th-period.
“Wait we can go together.” Aïssatou voiced while coming back to her senses.
“Naw it’s cool I’ll just meet you there I have to go to the washroom.” I lied. I could tell Michael saw right through my deliberate lie as he smiled sympathetically and continued on eating in awed silence.
