Chapter 28

Natalie’s eyes shot open. “What a crazy coincidencel” she scoffed, pushing herself to her feet. Tm actually here to quit today. I’ve had it with this circus. It makes me want to hurl, and 1 can’t stand another second of it.”

The office fell pin–drop quiet. Brian looked shell–shocked.

Natalie’s voice sliced through the silence, freezing cold. “I hope you all thrive under Jennifer’s command,” she said. She fixed Brian with a look and enunciated each word, “Stop bugging me, will you?”

With those parting words, Natalie swung around and marched out, leaving a heavy hush hanging in the air.

It took Brian a few seconds to snap out of it, and then he bolted after Natalie. Jennifer clenched her jaw and followed suit.

The office buzzed with confusion

Natalie was already stepping into the elevator when Brian caught up Jennifer tried to squeeze in too but missed the mark. The doors shut on her frustrated face.

In the elevator, Brian grabbed Natalie’s wrist. “What are you playing at?” he demanded.

“I meant what I said, Natalie retorted coolly

Brian laughed bitterly. “You think you’re too good for Sherman Group, huh! You think you can just walk away!”

“We’ll see, Natalie replied, unfazed.

Brian looked into Natalie’s eyes, finding an unseating detachment. Gone was the warmth he remembered from their past.

He felt a rush of panic. “You can’t quit, Nat,” he pressed.

“You heard me. I’m done feeling sick over this, she declared.

“Is this about Jennifer! I told you, you’re the only one for me. If you’d just—”

“I don’t want to,” Natalie interrupted Brian.

He snorted, “So, you want to cut ties completely!”

Naulic didn’t say anything,

Brian’s expression darkened. “Dream on! You’ll be tangled up with me forever

Natalie sneered, “Really?” In her mind, Jennifer, Sherman Group, and their whole family drama would stick with Brian forever–not her. Brian pressed his lips tightly. Natalie pulled her hand back hard.

The elevator dinged, and Natalie stormed to her desk in the Design Department to grab her things.

Brian just looked at her angrily.

It was a quick pack–up; all her personal items fit in one bag. Just as she was about to stash her mug, Brian snatched it and hurled it to the floor, warping it.

“Nice touch. It’s a gift from you, remember? Natalie quipped, utterly unfazed. It was the first gift he’d given her when she joined the company. Panic–uricken, Brian crouched to pick it up, but Natalie chucked it straight into the trash. “I don’t want your trash,” she spat.

Natalie thought, Just like you. No matter how important you were to me, 1 don’t want you anymore.”

She handed him her resignation letter, as if he was nothing but a stranger now.

Brian’s eyes flashed with rage as he grabbed Natalie’s shoulders, pinning her against the wall. “You really think I can’t touch you?”

Natalie let out a sarcastic laugh. “What’s your game, Mr. Sherman! Just a heads–up, Jennifer will be here any minute, and you’ve gotta keep your -cool. Act like you’re in love, whether it’s real or not. If you break her heart, your big plan to woo the Linney family is toast

Brian’s grip on her shoulders tightened visibly, the veins on his hand standing out, but finally, he checked his anger and stepped back.

Right on cue, Jennifer clicked toward them in her high heels. “Natalie, are you really going to resign? Is it because of me

You wish,” Natalie shot back.

Jennifer went quiet, turning a pleading gaze to Brian.

He just glared at Natalie, his voice low and intense. Leave if you must, but know this–you walk out that door, and there’s no coming back.” With a final, hard look, Brian turned and left.

The moment he was gone. Jennifer’s sweet façade vanished, replaced by a chilly sneer. “What did you tell Brian?”

“Tm out unless you’re gone, Natalie replied.

Jennifer became 100 livid to speak.

As Natalie went back to packing, Jennifer’s eyes followed her every move. She snapped, “Don’t you dare take anything worth a dime. It all belongs to Sherman Group. To Brian and ine

Then her eyes lit up as she spotted some design drawings in Natalie’s bag. “And these design drawings…” she said, sounding triumphant.

“These are my unreleased works. No way am I leaving them behind,” she said flatly,

Jennifer’s face twisted with rage, but Natalie didn’t linger. She grabbed her things and walked out,
