Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Aden
I lean my shoulder against the bars of my cell, arms crossed over my chest.
My lip raises in contempt as I shake my head, wondering if I made the right decision. Intentionally getting caught so I could get in here, just for the chance to talk to the warden.
Given who I am, it's ridiculous and insulting that I had to stoop to this level.
It's only been one night, but that's one night too long.
Two blue-uniformed guards walk down the row towards me.
"Kenwood? Warden wants to see you."
About f*cking time.
After securing my wrists in silver handcuffs before opening my cell door, they take me to the warden's office.
I sit down on a chair in front of Warden Dutton's desk, wordless, waiting for the guards to leave.
"So," Dutton says once they are gone and closing the file he was looking at. "I'm surprised you had the balls to come to my territory for a negotiation, Kenwood. It's brave." My wolf bristles, and I bite my tongue.
He knows nothing about "territory."
His territory is behind
these
neť
safely protected from
everyone and everything within steel and concrete.
Plus, it's easy to be the king when you have a captive audience. Literally. But clapping back at him won't get me what I need.
The public doesn't know it, but Warden Dutton not only runs this prison, but leverages his control over it to claim a significant stake in the workings of the city's underworld. He is as dirty as the rest of them.
And if other bosses go against him? He locks them up. Regardless of if they're human, shifter, or vampire. Regardless of how powerful and rich they are.
It's quite a trump card in a world where one of the only things that stops a gangster is a stay in prison.
Except for a few of us. We're
untouchable and he knows it. He's well aware of the fact that I'm only. here because I chose to be here. He thinks he might have leverage on me, but if he ever crossed me, I'd shred him in a heartbeat. There'd be nothing left of him for anyone to identify.
The image of that pleases me. Immensely.
"I'll be out soon enough," I respond, leaning back in my chair. "I'm here to talk about Colsen."
Dutton raises an eyebrow. "What about him?"
"If he's not taken care of, he's going to bring all of us down."
