Chapter 27
Dawn came quickly and when I woke up I made sure to wake up Brontes with me. I informed him what was happening while eating breakfast and he insisted on coming along. I wasn’t going to argue with him anyway.
When we made it onto the field, my warriors stood before me, ready for orders. Their hands were behind their backs and they looked straight ahead. I moved to stand in front of them--Brontes and Alecto to my left; Isis and my father to my right.
“I am not going to tell you that this is going to be easy. This will be hard.” I looked at every one of them carefully. They were my brothers and my sisters. They were my family. “We are going into two hunter camps that have weaponry that we do not have and is lethal on us.”
They stood tall and listened carefully to what I had to say-not a single sound was made but my voice and the sound of Mother Nature around us.
“I wish that I did not have to bring you into danger like I am doing now. I wish things were different. However, we can’t avoid the threat that is coming for us - fast. I want every single one of you to know that you are important to me. I expect you to fight for everything we live for. I expect you to come out of this alive and well. You are my brothers and my sisters. I can’t imagine seeing any one of you hurt.”
Their composure faltered a little and a sense of melancholy fell upon us. One of the pack warriors that I knew was in my Black Eagles unit stepped up.
“We will not fail you, Alpha. You are our sister and our leader. In this fight, we will come out victorious for you and our family.” He spoke, his voice wavering with emotion. My heart swelled with pride and tears brimmed in my eyes.
“That means a lot to me. I want you all to prepare. If it was any other normal battle I would say do not wear your armor but with hunters it is unpredictable. I need you to wear your armor, every single one of you.” I said quietly.
They all nodded and my father, Isis, and Alecto began splitting the group up and into formation. Brontes came up to me and wrapped his arms around me. I wanted to speak with him too. Last night’s conversation with Mathias forced me to question what really happened during the time Brontes was held prisoner.
We walked farther away from the group until I was sure we were out of earshot and then I turned to face him, with my arms crossed.
“Brontes, you are going to have to be frank with me. What happened during the time you were captured?” I asked.
His features darkened and he turned away from me. My hand shot out to stop him from doing so. I placed my hand on his cheek and I turned him to face me.
“What ever happened, it is in the past. It won’t change how I feel for you.” He looked at me and pain flashed through his eyes. I could feel the turmoil inside of him and I wanted to soothe all that he feared. My mate might be big and burly but he right now he looked like a broken man.
“When I first shifted and my body started changing, the female hunters started noticing. One of them in particular, Victoria, she took a liking to me. She did the unimaginable. I didn’t want to, Calliope. You have to understand I tried resisting but she woul-” It was that moment that I wanted to tear Victoria’s throat out. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, standing on my tip toes. He wrapped his arms around me.
“Thank you for telling me, Brontes.”

When dusk came, my father led one unit with Isis and I led the other unit with Brontes and Alecto. We made our way to the point where we were going to split. I turned to everyone.
“Be safe and may the Moon Goddess watch over us.” I spoke to everyone. They all murmured the same and after hugging my father, Isis, and Alecto, we broke apart and began moving.
Our armor was hard metal chest plates that covered our front, back, arms, and our sides. I know that it was a little ancient but this armor were made from our ancestors and lineage. For as long as werewolves were alive, hunters were there right along with us. These were made to protect us and have always done so.
When we reached the camp, the sun had already set completely and darkness stood with us as we looked upon the camp. The camp was not large but it wasn’t small either. Many tents surrounded the middle of the fireplace and three homes were built around it. A few snipers stood on top of the small houses on watch. I waved my hand and the Black Eagles unit began climbing trees quietly but efficiently and in a matter of minutes they had a clear view of the camp.
Ready. The captain of the unit spoke through the link. My trackers pulled out their daggers as they prepared to enter the camp.
Go ahead and shoot. I ordered. It didn’t take long to take out the four snipers standing on top of the home. It was an advantage to us when the snipers did not wear night vision goggles and relied on their senses because werewolf senses were ten times better than theirs.
I waved for us to enter camp immediately after. The plan was to take down the hunters in the tents first before entering the home when a loud whistle was heard through the silent night. I turned immediately to see a young hunter staring at us with surprise and fear. One of my trackers jumped on him and slit his throat but it was too late.
It was too fucking late because that whistle woke everyone up. Lights began turning on and loud voices were ordering around. I turned to Brontes who looked at me with determination. No fear. He moved in and kissed me hard on the lips.
Together. He linked.
