Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Farren’s POV
When I got back home, I saw an invitation from the mailbox. It came from my father, who wanted nothing but to get a piece of my inheritance from Grandpa.
It’s not been that long since I found out that the person behind the stalking and the threats was my stepmother, Julie. Now, it’s my father’s turn again.
“They won’t stop, I see,” I uttered before throwing the letter in the trash bin.
I knew better than anyone that ignoring it was the best option. But….
[“If you want to collect your mother’s remains, come to the party.”]
Father’s offer was too good to ignore.
Biting my lower l*p, I looked back at the letter.
I really wanted to get my mother’s remains and belongings from the ba sta rd. But…
“No. I should not. They might do something during the party.”
Father made a promise that he would make me regret not giving him the inheritance.
“I shouldn’t go,” I thought to myself and tossed the invitation in the trash.
But the next morning, I discovered the invitation sitting on the center table.
“Why is it here?” I pondered, examining the crumpled paper.
“I picked it up again,” came a deep voice from behind.
My husband suddenly appeared without warning. When I turned around, I saw him standing tall with his hands in his pockets.
Dressed in a sleek black suit and with perfectly groomed hair, he emitted a professional
aura.
“Last night, I found it in the trash,” he explained.
Confusion washed over me, causing my face to scrunch up. Why would Alaric do that?
To be honest, he’s been acting strange lately. He seemed genuinely concerned when he noticed the wound on my hand, and now he’s retrieving something I discarded.
“If someone throws something in the bin, it means they no longer need it,” I explained.

“But I still need it,” Alaric defended.
I retorted, “If you need a piece of paper, I have plenty. Just let me know.”
“You know that’s not what I was referring to. Your family invited you to a party,” he replied.
I let out a sigh before saying, “I don’t have any family left. My Grandfather has already passed away.”
“So, who is James Daughter that I saw in the letter? Is he a made-up character?” he asked.
No matter how much I deny it, James Daughtler is still my grandfather removed him from the family register.

I bit my l*p in frustration as I glanced back at Alaric, who had a nonchalant expression on his face as he discussed my step-family.
I ran my fingers through my hair, pushing it upwards, and then blew air out before responding to him. “So, what did you want to tell me?” I asked.
“I haven’t had the chance to meet anyone from your family introduce me?” he questioned.
Isn’t it normal for you to
“It’s not really important. We’re going to get divorced in a year,” I replied nonchalantly.
He defended himself, saying, “But don’t forget that we’re pretending to be a loving couple in public. We’ve already been to my Grandfather’s house, so it’s only fair for me to meet your family, even if they’re your stepfamily. It could be a problem if people find out that I’ve never met them.”
“Well, he makes a convincing argument,’ I admitted inside my head.
Alaric was always concerned about his reputation, so it made sense that he would want to do this for his own benefit.
“Actually,” Alaric added, “it might help me dispel the false rumors about the famous model. People will think I’m a faithful husband who’s willing to accompany his wife to the party.”
At first, I had no intention of accepting the invitation. But then Alaric came into the picture and made me reconsider. I wondered if I could use this opportunity to retrieve my mother’s belongings, even though my stepfamily might try to plot against me. After some careful thought, I finally made up my mind.
“So, the party is tomorrow evening at 6pm. Are you free?” I asked, looking directly at
Alaric.

“I don’t have anything scheduled for tomorrow,” he replied, glancing at his watch. “I’ll meet you at Harmos Boutique and Salon at 4pm. My secretary will take you there, so you don’t need to bring your car.”
“What? All of a sudden?” I exclaimed.
Did he already plan which Salon and boutique to go to once I agreed to bring him along?
“Are you planning to attend the party in your office clothes?” he questioned.
I glanced down at my plain office attire. By the time I looked up, Alaric was already walking away,
As he walked away, he casually mentioned, “I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.”
Just as I was about to voice my disagreement, Alaric abruptly turned around.
His intense gaze silenced me instantly. His eyes held a mysterious depth. Following hist line of sight, I realized he was fixated on the bandage wrapped around my hand..
Without saying another word, he continued on his way, leaving me alone in the living.
room.
His departure brought a sudden stillness to the house.
In his absence, my attention shifted back to the crumpled and d*rty letter resting on the center table.
“Isn’t it ironic?” I mused aloud.
A man like Alaric is willing to discard his wife in the future, yet he would go out of his way to pick up a piece of trash for the sake of his reputation.
I couldn’t help but burst into laughter at the absurdity of it all.
I couldn’t help but shake my head at my husband’s strange behavior when my phone suddenly vibrated. I quickly grabbed it and glanced at the screen. To my surprise, it was a message from Jasmine’s brother, Max.
“I am free tonight,” he said.
“Oh, right. I need to return his car,” I muttered to myself.
I typed a reply, asking, “Okay. Where can I meet you?”
After hitting the send button, I was taken aback when Max responded within seconds.

“Wow, he’s quick with his replies,” I commented as I opened his message.
“There’s a café near your office. I’m in the mood for something sweet. Would it be alright if we met there instead?” he asked.
“Is he suggesting we have dessert at the café?”
I pondered, tilting my head, trying to decipher the significance behind his message. “He’s aware that I’m married, so maybe this isn’t so bad,” I mused. Plus, I owe him a great deal. With that in mind, I responded, “Alright then. Consider it my treat.”
If only I had known what lay ahead, I would never have agreed to meet my friend’s brother for a meal at the café.
