Chapter 9
#Chapter 9: Best Friends
When I first saw Olivia standing at the bottom of the steps in her aunt’s old villa, once the shock of it all wore off, I couldn’t help but be utterly enamored by her
appearance.
Damn… She was still as beautiful as I remembered her. Even more, now, even with
her messy bedhead and dark circles under her eyes from sleeping. She oozed with life, much unlike the pale and demure Layla.
Even though my fiancee was beautiful, my heart trembled when I saw Olivia again.
Only, she was pregnant.
I could tell thanks to my Alpha abilities. I could sense the little life that was starting
to grow inside of her belly. She must have had a husband or a partner at home
waiting for her.
In an unexpected way, finding out that she was pregnant left me feeling
thunderstruck. Even though I was preparing for my own wedding and shouldn’t
have cared whether Olivia had found someone else or not, I couldn’t deny how I felt.
Ten years had passed and I thought that I would never see Olivia again, but now
she was right in front of me.
All of my old feelings rushed back as I looked into her hazel eyes and took in the
appearance of her tawny brown hair. It was a lot longer now and reached down to
the middle of her waist, much unlike its tomboyish cut when we were rambunctious
teens. She still had the look of a rebellious scamp about her, but she was more
womanly now.
Before, she was thin and lanky when I last saw her, and now she had filled out in all
of the right places with curves that drew my eye. She smelled like sea salt from the
ocean wind blowing in her hair.
I had to distance myself; I was a man who was supposed to be married in just a few
days, and she was pregnant with another man’s child.
But then again… If she had a family away from here, why was she here now, then?

Why was she fighting so hard for her aunt’s old villa without her husband even by her side? Oddly enough, for this very reason I found myself subconsciously wanting to chastise her and antagonize her as I internally speculated on who the father of
her baby was and why he wasn’t with her.
I couldn’t tell who I had more distaste for; her, for finding someone and getting pregnant with his baby, or her husband for not being by her side. And her clothes looked a bit haggard, too. It was a man’s job to take care of his woman. Why did she
look like she was wearing old work clothes?
Either way, I didn’t have time to speculate on it. I had a wedding to plan,
renovations to finish, and now… I had to fight against my childhood friend for ownership of the villa, because apparently we both had legal deeds to the house with our own names on it thanks to a greedy treasurer making mistakes.
I didn’t want to admit it, but the renovations I made in the
villa were actually
Olivia’s ideas from when we were kids. She always used to talk about how she wanted to change the wallpaper, tear up the ratty old carpeting, and create a beautiful patio in the back overlooking the ocean. I didn’t realize it at first when I bought the place and started making the renovations, but when I saw her again, I was instantly reminded of the things that she used to say… and I quickly realized that I had accidentally brought her dream to life.
When I first learned before the wedding that Layla was cheating on me with her
b*dyguard, my first gut reaction was nothing but anger.
For some reason, the only idea in my mind was to rush up to Olivia and take her hand. I used my power of Absolute Obedience on her and declared that she was my
one true love, my fated mate.
I made a lot of excuses after that. I told her that she was just the easiest target to help me get out of the situation, and that I had no feelings for her.
But it was a lie.
I would never tell her that I did actually have feelings for her; not when I knew that she was pregnant and had a man waiting for her at home.
But then again, when she suddenly declared that she had no family and nowhere to

go, I felt confused and couldn’t help but look down at her belly for a moment, which I knew contained the beginnings of a little life.
“Wait,” she said, holding up her hand in shock before I could say anything else, “you don’t seriously think I’m pregnant, do you? Or was that just another scheme of yours back there to garner sympathy from the wedding guests?”
I felt my eyebrows raise in surprise. Of course it wasn’t a scheme; I really did sense.
a pregnancy inside of her, and my abilities were never wrong.
“You didn’t know you were pregnant?” I asked, feeling incredulous.
Olivia just stared at me with her wide, hazel eyes. There was a combination of disbelief and anger written across her heart–shaped face. She was already furious. with me for what I did earlier at the wedding, and now it was even worse that I mentioned her pregnancy.
“What are you talking about?!” she said, raising her voice slightly. “I’m not pregnant,
Nathan!”
I shook my head and set my coffee down. My tie suddenly felt too tight around my
n*eck, and I loosened it as I started to slowly walk up to her.
As I did, I could see her eyes travel down to my n*eck, and the subconscious look
that she gave me and the way that she subtly licked her l*ps at that moment seemed
like anything but the way that a woman in a relationship with a baby in her belly
would dare to look at another man.
“Olivia,” I said, “I can tell. I’m an Alpha, remember? It’s one of my abilities to sense
all of the members of the pack, even the unborn. If you’re playing a joke on me, then
“You must be the one who’s playing a joke on me.” Her voice was harsh and her
words were short. There was a moment of shocked silence between us while I stared
at her with wide eyes and Olivia scowled, pushing her lower l*p out in a pout.
She looked undeniably cute when she did that, and it instantly reminded me of
what she was like when we were just kids. I felt myself staring at her l*ps.
involuntarily, just as I often used to do when we were kids and I started to fall for
her, and I had to remind myself to stop.
