Chapter 803
Eve peeked into the gift box and spotted a few scones nestled inside. They looked exactly like the ones she used to munch on as a kid. Back then, she couldn't help but envy Diana, who had not just a Chinese chef, but a Western chef and even a dedicated pastry chef at her beck and call. Eve picked up a scone and took a bite. "How's it taste?" Diana asked, her eyes curious. Eve gave a nod of approval, "Absolutely delicious."
Meanwhile, Pax made his way over to Chloe and Connor. "Hey, Uncle, Sis... Aunt," he greeted them warmly. Connor glanced at Pax, gave his shoulder a friendly pat, and said, "Looking sharp today!"
"Thanks," Pax replied, a small smile tugging at his lips. Connor could tell Pax had something on his mind for Chloe. He took the hint, "It's getting a bit chilly out here; I'll head inside."
With Connor gone, it was just Chloe and Pax in the hallway. Chloe broke the silence, "I won't bother with congratulations, Pax, but I need you to understand-sacrificing your happiness for your uncle and me isn't necessary at all."
Pax's eyes flickered momentarily. Chloe sighed, "I know what's been happening. Your mom has been using threats against me and your uncle to get you to bend to her will. Pax, why would you be so naive? You know she won't stop because of your sacrifices; she'll only push further."
Pax knew this all too well. "Chloe, I chose this. It's not just for you. She would've made me do these things regardless. She's my mom, and there's nothing I can do."
Chloe understood Pax's tough spot. He was in a worse position than she was-sometimes she felt he was even worse off than Connor. Connor had faced oppression and hardship from a young age and saw the world's dark side early on. He had already seen through Claire's façade.
But Pax was different. He'd lived in the light, only to be suddenly thrown into darkness. His world had been upended, leaving ruins in its wake. The cheerful boy he once was had vanished, replaced by a youth overshadowed by gloom.
Chloe spoke softly, "Your uncle once said, this is just a phase. Everything will pass, like walking through a tunnel. No matter how long the darkness lasts, there will always be a moment when you see the light again."
Connor had mentioned that no one could help Pax right now. This was a journey he had to undertake alone. After feeling disappointment, even despair, and having his spirit broken, he'd eventually rebuild. One day, he'd fortify his world against all the
cruelty. But this step-no one could take it for him.
Pax nodded, "Chloe, can I hug you one last time? Chloe opened her arms wide, welcoming him. Pax stepped forward and wrapped her n an embrace. His eyes were red with emotion. Even though people were watching, the scene was touching in away that defied explanation. There was nothing improper about it.
Pax took a deep breath and after a few seconds, he let go of Chloe. "Oh, my apologies," a voice chimed in from the side. Suddenly, a splash of champagne drenched Pax. Chloe and Pax turned to see Diana, holding a glass of champagne and nearly losing her balance. Luckily Pax was quick and caught her arm, but not before the champagne had soaked him.
