Chapter 560
Even though Chloe and Jacob's relationship had grown distant, he'd been her dad for twenty years. In moments like this, Chloe couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
At around one in the afternoon, Director Zhao showed up. He was super polite to Connor and then handed things over to Dr. Fink. The operating room and all the pre-surgery arrangements were already set up.
The surgery lasted two hours and went off without a hitch. Leah finally felt a massive wave of relief wash over her. Turning to Chloe, with tears in her eyes, she said, "Chloe, thank you."
Chloe's response was a bit detached, "As long as everything's okay." But Leah noticed the genuine concern in Chloe's eyes when Jacob was wheeled into the operating room.
Chloe might seem distant, but deep down, her kindness hadn't just disappeared after two decades. Leah confessed, "Chloe, I'm sorry. These past three years, I've messed up so much. I never thought Lisa would do such awful things." Leah truly regretted everything. She missed the good old days when the three of them were a happy family. But those days were gone for good.
Chloe replied calmly, "What Lisa did-drugging me-wasn't your doing. I won't blame you for her actions." Leah felt a flicker of happiness, but Chloe's distant tone and expression quickly dimmed it.
Since Chloe had accepted Ann, she'd changed a lot. Leah cautiously asked, "Chloe, do you still see me as your mom?"
"I acknowledge you, and I'll take care of you as you age. But that's where it ends. Just like how I made sure Dad was okay today. That's all I've got to give."
Chloe's feelings towards Leah were
a tangled mess. Deep down, every child loves their mother. But when Lisa came back, and the woman who had once treasured her suddenly turned cold, it was terrifying. Chloe couldn't wrap her
vel
head around it, and it became a
deep-seated issue for her.
But Chloe had moved past it. Human emotions are tricky. Leah's love was genuine, as was her anger and disdain, and now, her regret was real too. Especially after what Lisa had accused her of yesterday. Chloe had finally found peace. Still, she couldn't forget how Leah had once told her to disappear or how she'd thrown her out into the storm. Nor could she forget the hurt from the past three years.
Chloe didn't harbor hatred or
resentment anymore; it was like a wound that had healed over, no
longer painful. But even though i et
didn't t kurt, it was still a scar, never fully smooth. She didn't want to stir up drama or pretend everything was fine.
So, she decided to leave things as they were.
Leah felt the sting, but she knew she'd have to face the consequences of her choices. Three years ago, she picked Lisa and left Chloe behind. This was her karma.
After the surgery, Chloe didn't stick around the hospital for long. Connor had a crucial meeting to attend, and Chloe planned to tag along to the CN Tower. But just as they reached the parking lot, Chloe's phone rang.
It was Gordon, Lucas's dad. He'd
heard about Jacob being in the hospital. After checking in, he said, "Chloe, could you visit your
godmother tonight? She's been soet
upset lately, refusing to eat or drink. It's like she's wasting away. I keep telling her that her grandchildren will find their own way and not to fret, but no matter how I try, she won't touch a thing. You're her favorite; maybe you can talk some sense into her."
Chloe was puzzled, "Why isn't she eating?"
Gordon let out a long sigh, "Lucas has brought Linda home and announced they're planning a big wedding."
