Chapter 1705
Jamie cast a sidelong glance at Lila, her cold expression saying it all.
Even if she weren't working as a secretary at Lucas Corporation, she was still a college graduate. If she couldn't even handle creating a PowerPoint, she might as well give up entirely. Lila paused, momentarily caught off guard. "Am I not allowed to question things?" she retorted defensively.
Jamie let out a dry laugh, ignoring the jab as she set up the projector. The PowerPoint Lila had demanded appeared crisp and professional on the screen.
Jamie turned to her with a composed smile. "Miss Lila, do you have any more concerns now?"
When it came to working with Lila, Jamie had already anticipated all the challenges Lila might throw her way. She had prepared meticulously for every possible scenario.
On top of that, during their encounter at Chroma Club, Ben had held back from taking further action against Lila solely because of Jamie.
Lila understood this now. She also realized that Jamie wasn't just aiming to complete the project-she was using this collaboration to prove herself.
It was at this moment that Lila fully grasped Jamie's thoroughness and ability to think ahead. Jamie wasn't just capable-she was exceptional.
For the first time, Lila found herself conceding defeat.
And in that moment, she finally understood why Ben had chosen Jamie.
"I'll sign the project," Lila said finally, her tone more subdued. "And I won't make things difficult for you again."
Jamie smiled graciously. "It's always better to have a friend than an enemy. You're an incredibly capable person too, Miss Carson."
Lila, however, felt undeserving of Jamie's praise. After a brief pause, she lowered her head in a 90-degree bow and said, "Jamie, I owe you an apology for how I've behaved." This gesture stunned everyone in the room. Lila was a well-known figure in the industry, and no one would have expected her to humble herself like this.
Jamie wasn't just Ben's wife, propped up by his influence. During her time at Lucas Corporation, she had proven her own capabilities and earned the respect of her colleagues. This was Jamie's hard-fought moment, and she knew it. From now on, she could hold her head high.
Later, Jamie presented the signed collaboration to Ben. Her smile was radiant with pride, and Ben couldn't hide his own delight. "I knew it. My wife is the best." Jamie playfully rolled her eyes. "Yet you were so eager to make me a full-time housewife."
Ben pulled her into his arms. "Alright, alright. If you want to be a career woman, then a career woman it is. I'll support you all the way. So, what do you feel like eating tonight?"

Ben was clearly hoping for a quiet evening alone with her.
But Jamie had other plans. She preferred to head home, where Charlie was waiting.
Over the past four years, Jamie had lived frugally and worked various jobs. Her experience working in restaurant kitchens had taught her that they weren't always the cleanest. "Let's go home," she said. "I've given my day to work. My evenings belong to my child."
"Alright," Ben agreed, a soft smile on his face. "Whatever my wife says."
They arrived home right on time. Ben's mother had nearly recovered and, despite having a nanny, preferred to cook meals herself.
When they walked in, Mrs. Lucas looked mildly annoyed. "Didn't I tell you both not to worry? With me here, you don't need to rush home every evening."
It was obvious they had hurried back for Charlie's sake.
Mrs. Lucas was his grandmother,
after all-how could she ever harm him? And her efforts to change had not gone unnoticed by Jamie, who saw how much joy she found in looking after her grandson
These days, Mrs. Lucas even hoped Jamie and Ben would have more children to fill the house with noise and laughter.
Jamie understood what she meant
and quickly stepped forward, taking her arm. "Mom, I know you mean well and only want the best for us. But Charlie is in a critical stage at school right now. How can his parents not be there for him?"
