Chapter 1702
Ben rubbed his tired eyes after reviewing the draft for a while. When he looked back at Jamie, a faint smile curved his lips. "The draft looks good-just a few minor issues." Jamie immediately perked up, eager to learn, like a diligent student.
Playing the role of her temporary teacher, Ben shared everything he knew without holding back.
The afternoon flew by.
Feeling satisfied, Jamie grabbed the draft with fresh notes and rushed off to make revisions. She became so immersed in her work that she didn't even notice how much time had passed until evening.
Ben, having finished his own tasks, looked over and saw Jamie still glued to her computer. With a sigh, he rubbed his forehead and walked over to pull her up from her chair.
Jamie yelped as her upper body suddenly left the ground. "Ben, what are you doing? I'm not done yet!"
Ben pointed to his watch. "Take a look at the time."
Jamie glanced at the clock, then jumped up in alarm, nearly bumping into him. "Charlie!"
But as soon as she panicked, she smacked her forehead, remembering that she had already asked the nanny to pick him up.
Ben noticed her flustered expression and didn't even need to ask. He chuckled, his brows lifting with a touch of exasperation. "Even if you don't have to pick up Charlie, you should clock out when it's time to go home. I'm not paying overtime for staying late." With that, he pulled her out of the chair, firm but gentle.
As they left the office, Jamie glanced back at her nearly completed draft with a twinge of reluctance. It was so close to being finished!
But Ben wasn't open to negotiation.
During rush hour, the drive home was slow, with traffic clogging the streets. Jamie's frustration had mostly faded. She wasn't obsessively attached to working. She simply wanted to finish the project as soon as possible.
As she gazed out the car window at the gridlocked roads, she couldn't help but notice Ben's slightly furrowed brows, his mood seemingly a bit restless.
Curious, she asked, "You seem eager to get home today. Is something going on?"
Ben paused briefly, his expression neutral. "I just want to see Charlie sooner. I've been so busy these past few days that I haven't had much time with him."
Hearing this, Jamie's earlier
suspicions dissipated. She thought
back to how Charlie had quietly complained the night before about how busy both his parents were. A pang of guilt washed over her.
Lowering her eyes, Jamie felt the same urgency to get home to their little boy.
What she didn't notice was the subtle sigh of relief Ben let out beside her. He had almost let the surprise slip.
Half an hour later, they arrived home.
Jamie unlocked the door, but when she pressed the doorbell, there was no response from inside. After waiting a while, she began to worry. Could no one be home? Growing anxious, she quickly pushed the door open.
The next second, a confetti popper exploded, showering her with streamers and faux snow, covering her hair in colorful strands.
Jamie froze in place, her worried expression comically stuck on her face.
"Happy birthday, Mommy!" Charlie shouted as he jumped out from behind the door.

Someone switched on the living room lights, flooding the room with brightness. Jamie blinked at the sudden glare and, once her eyes adjusted, stared in shock at the
scene before her.

The entire living room had been transformed. Pink balloons floated from the ceiling, a table full of steaming dishes sat in the center, and a large cake took pride of place.
Nina stood nearby with Orion,
smiling as she rested a hand on Charlie's shoulder. "These two little ones wanted to surprise you for your birthday. This was all their idea, so don't blame us for keeping it a secret!"
Still processing everything, Jamie turned to look behind her and found a bouquet of flowers held out to her by Ben.
