Chapter 1186
Joe knew that Yvonne's words earlier were mostly to stop him from bothering her, but Nigel wanted to take advantage of the situation.
Seeing Yvonne look down without a word, Nigel refused to give up and asked again, "If marrying me would get rid of Joe for good, would you do it?"
Yvonne lifted her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "That wouldn't be fair to you."
Nigel let out a bitter laugh. "Fairness doesn't matter to me. I can see you don't feel that way about him. Since that's the case, I like you, and if being your shield is what it takes, so be it." Yvonne choked up, unable to find the right words. And just like that, they agreed to a marriage, a decision that should have been made with more caution.
The next morning, when Yvonne told Nina about it, Nina was shocked. She stared at Yvonne in disbelief for a long time before Yvonne gave a bitter smile, and Nina began to understand. Nina took Yvonne's hand and gently urged, "Before this goes public, you should explain things to him. You can't go through with this marriage."
Yvonne shook her head. "I've thought about it all night and I've made peace with it. Nina, I don't have much time left, right? So why not get married once before I leave this world?" Nina didn't know how to respond to that. All she felt was a deep ache in her heart for Yvonne.
Joe was the first to hear the news of Yvonne and Nigel's wedding, set for the following Sunday. On that day, he turned away all visitors and locked himself in his hospital room, staring at the ceiling for an entire day.
From then on, Joe stopped seeking Yvonne out. However, behind the scenes, he arranged for her art exhibit to be fully reorganized and even gave the investors a generous payment as a thank-you.
Meanwhile, the bride-to-be was
enjoying herself, spending her days shopping with Nina, buying things and having them delivered straight to her new home. The new house, a villa, was a gift from Nigel, located just one street away from Nina's
place.
Life seemed to be going exactly as Yvonne had hoped. She was growing more and more fond of this new routine. If only her health could be restored, she felt like she would have nothing else to wish for. Whenever such thoughts crossed her mind, she immediately cut them off. She was afraid that the universe would take away the blessing of her upcoming wedding.
As night fell, and with the wedding set for tomorrow, Yvonne stumbled out of a bar, slightly tipsy. She noticed a familiar car and walked over to it.
Tapping on the window, Yvonne called out, "Take me home, hurry up."
Inside the car, Joe heard her voice and rolled down the window. Seeing Yvonne, his eyes instantly lit up.
He opened the door, and once she was inside, he leaned toward her. "Well, well, a lady throwing herself at me. This isn't good, you know. But
hey, I'm in a bad mood tonight, so I'll
let you have your way just this once."
QUMS
Yvonne laughed and gave him her home address. "Let me tell you something. I'm getting married tomorrow. Do you know how amazing it feels to have someone to rely on? That sense of security is indescribable."
Joe chuckled bitterly. "What a
coincidence. The woman I love is getting married tomorrow too. Let me tell you, fate has a twisted sense of humor. It says we're half-siblings, which means I could never confess my love to her. Can you imagine loving someone but not being able to be with them? Watching them be with someone else. It's torture."
"Yeah, torture. When it hurts, drink," Yvonne slurred, completely unaware that the man beside her was Joe.
And Joe, equally clueless, kept the conversation going. Their words drifted from one topic to another.
Before they knew it, their eyes met, and their lips collided in a kiss.
