Chapter 11

“The hell Daleyza?” Ace glared at me.
“It was a reflex.” I shrugged.
“Reflex? You almost burst my head because of a reflex?”
“Why did you bang the door open, like that? I thought we were under attack.” I really was startled when the door suddenly banged open.
“Really?” he replied sarcastically as he rolled his eyes. “Anyway, something has come up I’ve to go back.”
“Now? But we…”
“No. I’m going. You and Aiden are staying here.”
“Why? And for how long?”
“For as long as you need.” I frown hearing that.
“What?”
“You’re staying here till you’re ready to go back.”
“So now you’re going to decide what’s good for me or not?” I say defensively. Inhaling deeply he rubbed his hand over his face.
“Daleyza I really don’t have the energy to get into this with you right now.” With that he grabbed a few of his things and left the room. I huffed and followed him
“You can’t leave like this.” I yell and he turns around sharply.
“You think I want to?” that left me speechless. “Go take a shower and have dinner with my mom and Aiden.” For a moment he seemed vulnerable. It didn’t last long as he put his serious façade back up, but it was there. Slowly he retreaded down the stairs leaving me staring at his back till he turned and vanished from my sight. I couldn’t move.
I snapped out of my thoughts when Aiden tugged my hand.
“Mama, I’m hungry.” He pouted cutely.
“Hmm. Let’s get some dinner.” He nodded. We walked down the stairs and went into the kitchen. Ace was talking with his mom and stopped as we walked in. he turned around and his eyes landed on Aiden.
“Hey buddy. I have to go away for a few days. Okay?”
“You’re leaving me?” Aiden whispered and inched closer to me.
“It’s only for a few days I promise.” Aiden looked warily toward him. Ace sighed as he stood up and made his way out of the house.
“Dinner is ready.” Ida’s voice brought my attention back to the present. I took Aiden’s hand while walking into the kitchen. He reluctantly followed. I put his plate down in front of him, but he crossed his arms and refused.
“Aiden…” I look sternly toward him. “Eat your food.”
“But mama…”
“Monkey, you not eating will not make your papa return. So quickly finish your food.”
He stared into my eyes for a moment. Knowing he wasn’t going to win he gave in and started eating. Smiling I ruffled his hair as I reached over and grabbed a plate of my own. Dinner was unusually quiet. Ida tried making small talk, but it didn’t get far. We were heading up stairs after dinner when Ida asked if she could put Aiden to bed. I nodded and she took his hand leading him to his room. I went to my room to freshen up and checked on Aiden afterwards. Ida was singing him a lullaby, her sweet voice even captivated me. She looked at him with such a loving gaze. Turning around I walked back downstairs and sat down on the patio.
“It gets really cold out here at night.” I hear Ida’s voice as a warm blanket is placed on my shoulders.
“It’s fine. But thanks.” I smile and she sits down beside me. We sat beside each other in silence for a long time. Neither of us felt the need to speak up.
“How are you feeling?” she finally spoke up. I didn’t even know what to say to that.
“I’m okay.” I shrug.
“No, you’re not.”
“Listen I don’t need you to analyze and figure out what’s wrong with me, okay? I’m fine. And I can take care of myself.” I snapped. I could feel her gaze on me without even looking. Standing up I walked inside without even giving her a chance to say something.
Storming up to the room I slept in last night I slam the door shut. I washed my face and stared at my reflection for a while. When did I start looking so… fragile? I could barely recognize myself.
Shaking the thoughts away I wipe my face and walk over to the bed. Staring at the ceiling I wait till my mind gives up and I can get some sleep. Seeing it was already 2 a.m. I hoped it would be sooner rather than later. Sighing I turn to my side.
My eyes flickered open to see the sun shining through the curtains. I noticed the door cracking open and aiden walking in. he jumped on the bed and a let him for a moment before pulling him in a hug.
“Good morning mama.”
“Good morning monkey.” He started giggling as I tickled his side.
“Stop iiittt.” He screeched. I finally stopped and he caught his breath.
“Come on let’s get you showered.” I picked him up and head to the bathroom. After giving him a bath during which he managed to completely drench me, I put him in clean clothes. I took a shower myself. When I returned to my room Aiden was jumping on the bed.
We went downstairs and Ida was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. When she heard Aiden she picked him up and enveloped him in a hug.
“Good morning Daleyza.” She smiled brightly.
“Morning.”
“Here pick out whatever you like.” She handed me a plate as she pointed to the counter with various breakfast items. How early did she get up to prepare it all? Ida herself put a plate together for Aiden as she asked what he wanted. And knowing that monkey he would eat waffles with ice cream.
We walked to the back and had our breakfast while enjoying the sun. After Aiden finished his food he ran off to play with some of the animals not far from where they were seated. For some reason he kept running after one baby lamb. It was a funny sight.
The days here passed really slowly. Especially considering I didn’t have much to do. That is until I learned a truth that had me questioning everything I knew.
