Blood red love

Vidar watched Charli furrow her brows and look at him.

“What I am?” she asked. “I am human, Vidar.” A slight shiver ran down his spine as she spoke his name. It always did.
“You are, and you are not,” he said. She snorted.
“Could v
you be any more vague?”
“Sorry. I’ll explain. Now we come to the third kind of vampire, the most sacred of them all. In the world, there are special humans. Humans who are born human, that stay human and have no special abilities except for one. If they choose to, they can fundamentally alter themselves to become any of the subspecies that are cousins of the human species. Vampires, demons, angels, werewolves, and some other species all fall under this category. This kind of human is called a maiden, no matter what gender they are,” he told her. She nodded to show she was listening. “A long time ago, when a maiden appeared, there would be outright war between all species and all fractions within them. Everyone wanted to be the ones who possessed the
maiden.”
“Why? I mean, it’s a cool thing to be able to do, but why are they so coveted?” Charlie asked.
“A number of reasons. New blood into a species is one. None of the magical creatures reproduce at a fast rate. Children are often few and far apart. We can’t mix with each other or with humans, so the family lines get close sometimes. Someone with new genetics is always welcome. Then it’s a question of pride. We are not good at sharing, not between species or between groups. Everyone wants to win the prize for the sake of winning. Lastly, when the maiden makes a choice and turns herself into a magical species, they often get a gift. A special ability that will give that fraction a head start,” he explained. “But a few hundred years back, it changed. Humans was no longer as oblivious as before, and large wars were to be avoided if possible. It was decided that the group who discovered a maiden were the ones to guide them into our world. They would be free to make their own decision. Now it is an honour and a privilege to find a maiden and introduce them to the magical world. We will protect them, even from ourselves, if necessary,” he said. Charlie’s eyes grew bigger.
“Are you telling me..?”

“That you are a maiden? Yes. We all knew the moment you came into the room that Thuruthy night. You are under our protection and our guidance,” he told her.
“So I have to choose?”
“No, Charlie. Everything is up to you. If you want to walk away from all of this., forget this conversation ever happened. It is your right to do so. I will drive you to your brother’s and you will never see us again. But we will protect you and make sure that our world never crosses your path again.” Vidar said. He hoped she didn’t want to take that road. He would break if he needed to watch her from afar. But he would do it
“And if I want to be a part of all of this, but still remain human?”
“Then you will remain human. The transformation isn’t like choosing what to wear in the morning. It needs to come from deep within your soul, a need so great it will sweep all other thoughts away. That is the only way for you to transform. If you have hesitations or a part of you don’t want to transform, you won’t” She modded and looked down at her bands. She bitt her lip and Vidar could see she was thinking about something.
“There is more, isn’t there? Something that exists between us?” Wider smiled at her and brushed his fingertips over her arm and took her hand im his.
“There are. But we can talk about that tomorrow, or next week, if you med time to take in all the things I have told you. You have taken it better than I would ever have expected. But it’s okay to take it in steps,” he said. She looked at their join hands as she played with his fingers.
“No,” she told him, looking up. “I want to know,” Widar mordidiel
“Most magical creatures have a way to find a partner that is their genetic match. Or true love. if you prefer the more romantic version.. The demons have soll spark, werewolves have mates and vampires have imprints. In a way ours are more flexible than most sitems. sometime, if two vampires spend a long time together and have a clone commeriam, it can trigger an imprint. Sometimes, even if it’s rare, there are imenimpatim.““”
“Like a mother goose and a baby goose?” Chardie anbed.

“Yes, but could we please use another example that doesn’t include a child–parent bond?” he
asked. She smiled and nodded.
“As a maiden, you have the possibility to make a connection with any species. For some reason, we don’t fully understand, maidens are also more receptive towards imprinting. That’s why we have strict rules about one vampire spending too much time with a maiden who hasn’t made their choice,” he explained.
“We started to imprint,” she said. It wasn’t a question.
“Yes, and no. It was instant. I was lost the moment I saw you and pulled you into my lap,” he told her. “But I knew I had no right to you. You needed to be free to make any choice you want to make. I tried to back away from you, pretend you didn’t exist. But every time I tried, you popped up, and I found myself unable to keep my promises.” He paused and looked at her. She was looking back at him but he had a hard time interpreting her expression. “I
promise you, Charlie. I will never force your hand. You are free to choose your life. As long as I’m alive, I will protect your right to decide your own life,” he vowed.
“And if I choose to walk away?” she asked.
“I will honour that choice,” he promised. She nodded. He still didn’t know if it had been what she wanted to hear. “How about I get some ice cream and then I’ll show you the guest room?”
“That sound nice,” she said. He lifted her hand and placed a gentle kiss on it. Vidar was happy she didn’t flinch or pull away. He got the cookies and cream ice cream and they sat on the couch eating in silence. When they were done, he placed both their bowls on the table and then he helped her up and showed her the guest room..
“You have your own bathroom. It should be stocked and have clean towels. Please use what you need. Do you want to borrow a shirt to sleep in?” he asked.
“Thank you, I would appreciate it,” she told him.
“One moment,” he said, and he got an old, well used t–shirt that he knew was soft. He walked back to her. “There you go. My room is right next to yours. If you need anything, just come over,” he told her. She nodded and took the t–shirt.

“You’re not going to ask me to join you?” she asked.
“No, lilla lo. Not tonight. Tonight, you need to rest and think. When I take you to bed, there won’t be any time f
that,” he promised, and he kissed her. It wasn’t like their first kiss, which had been fuelled by passion. This was a calm, gentle kiss. Vidar took his time exploring her mouth. He wanted to do more, he wanted to carry her to his bed, where she belonged. But he had already crossed a line by kissing her. He drew back and kissed her on the forehead. “Sweet dreams, Charlie.”
“You too, Vidar. Thank you for looking out for me,” she told him and disappeared into the guest room. Vidar stayed outside the door and listened to her starting the shower, but when he heard the first garment drop to the floor, he walked away. He had tested his self constraint enough for one day. He got ready for bed, sent an email to the others telling them he had told Charlie and how she had taken it. As he drifted off to sleep, he enjoyed the sound of Charlie’s heartbeats.
He woke up a while later by a soft knock on his bedroom door. He sat up in bed, happy he had left his boxers on, and called to her to enter. Charlie came into his room wearing his t–shirt. She looked like a dream come true.
“Is something wrong?” he asked. She stopped in the middle of the room, as if she had second. thoughts.
“I can’t sleep,” she confessed.
“To many thoughts in your mind?” She nodded. “Come here,” he told her, lifting the corner of the cover. She looked at him and then at the raised cover and then she scurried over and almost jumped into his bed. He held back a chuckle as he laid back down and pulled her into his arms. He felt her make herself comfortable and snuggle in closer to him. “Better?” he asked.
“Much. Thank you,” she said.
“Don’t thank me. I’m being selfish,” he told her and kissed the top of her head before he wrapped his arms around her to make sure she was safe.
