Chapter 23: When I Die or When She Kills Me
Jeffrey nodded to indicate he understood.
"Alright, I will immediately inform Miss Miller. With Miss Garcia, Miss Miller can play her role perfectly as your wife and she no longer needs to donate blood to you monthly. But..."
Jeffrey paused slightly before mustering enough courage to ask, "Mr. Harris, do you really intend to buy over Miss Garcia's life? Besides, if Miss Miller were to learn of this, I am afraid there will be troubles ahead.
Lawrence knitted his brows hard.
He stood in front of the elevator and watched his own blurred and somehow unfamiliar reflection on the steel door, and he blurted out after suddenly lifting his mouth, "I'm just playing around. Why so serious?" "If Charlotte wants freedom, she will get it when I die or when she kills me."
Jeffrey couldn't find any words to continue the conversation.
Charlotte continued to stand by the window until she saw with her own eyes Lawrence's departure before turning back and returning to the living room.
As soon as she sat down, her phone which was on the table suddenly rang.
Seeing "Evelyn" was being displayed on the screen, Charlotte felt her face becoming emotionless. She promptly answered the call.
"Charlotte here."
Evelyn's voice came through on the receiver.
"Well, you are a lucky cat! The family who is the benefactor of your blood-donating has fetched me a news that they have found a more suitable blood donor. They don't need you anymore." Charlotte was stunned for a moment.
"They don't... need me?" She widened her eyes in disbelief as she sought to confirm this fact, "Is that for real?"
If she didn't need to get her blood taken anymore, did that mean she was going to recapture a newfound freedom? Then, her father and younger brother...
Before she could process this thoroughly, Evelyn interrupted her while sounding very anxious, "I know what you are thinking. Don't even dream of that! Without this massive amount of income, the Garcia family is my last resort here. I won't return to you your father and brother. You need to do what you should do!"
After that, the line went into busy tone.
Charlotte felt her heart sinking into a deep abyss.
In just one minute, she felt like she had fallen from heaven into hell.
However, it had been five years.
She no longer wanted to live like this. She didn't want to see people related to her suffer anything.
Therefore...
Charlotte shot up from the sofa and swooped down to pick up the bank card left behind by Lawrence. She cradled the card as if it was the most precious thing ever.
She had six million yuan now, which was enough.
She rummaged around and found her phone while shutting her eyes to reminisce about the phone number she had seen displayed on a huge television screen in the commercial street. With a shaking hand, she dialled that number.
It rang for some time before it was answered.
"Hello, who is this?" It was a stranger's voice.
Charlotte clutched the phone tightly as she held her breath. Then, she asked carefully, "Hello. Are you the detective who's responsible for finding missing person?"
That person immediately chuckled.
"That's me. Why, are you looking for someone, miss?"
"Yes. I need to find someone."
It had been five years, and Charlotte regarded this moment as the culmination of her hopes. When she thought about the possibility of reuniting with her father and brother, her voice inadvertently cracked. "I want to look for my family."
That person asked, "Then you should know what it takes for me to start my search, no? The starting price is five million yuan, and I won't do anything if there's a cent less..."
"I will pay you that amount. In return, I want you to tell me about their whereabouts."
The man paused before continuing, "Transfer three million yuan to a designated account. Come to the second floor of the Gilt Bronze Café, I will wait for you to come here to sign the contract."☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
