Chapter 4
FROM BEHIND THE VEIL
Finally.
After many mistakes, I finally found something that make Wes happy. He says he has superpowers, but really it’s my powers that help him with his trials. He’s so proud he can fight better. This warms my heart.
It's a tiny trick, but he’s not miserable. I do have to use it sparingly though. If I use it too much, a bit of my bad luck gets mixed up in there and Wes has some minor accidents. It's ok. I just need to practice more.
Since I’ve found what he likes, I’ve been able to really see what makes him Wes. I’ve been learning from him. He’s seems to have forgotten I’m here now. It’s good for me, but not, at the same time. I liked that he felt me around him. I know it’s bad for my bubble and if I had his courage, I wouldn’t care, but I don’t that kind of courage.
When he doesn’t know I’m there, I’ve been able to learn his language. His strange writings make sense now. I’m also learning what things are in his world. When he’s calm, I understand his feelings better.
I’ve helped him in his fighting a lot. We battled lycans and vampires. Wolves that can disappear in black smoke and wolves made of ice! There’s so much to this world, that I hate to leave it. Even for a moment in time, but I have to see my tree.
My powers weaken with each passing moon cycle. I must recharge them under the moons blue power. I’ve been leaving, but haven’t recharged them properly for sometime. I just hope he’s not mad.
In order for me to recharge properly, I must leave this place for seven nights. It pains me, but Wes is among friends and he’ll be ok until I come back.
On the night before I have to be in the forest, I have to make sure Wes is in a calm place.
“I know my gifts to you have been worrisome. I really thought you’d like my surprises. I’m sorry. I’ll do better.” I lean my head on the edge of his bed. “I just want to make you happy.” I whisper.
My skin shimmers and the light from it dances on his skin. “You have no idea how special you are.”
I gaze at his face as I share my song with him. I rest my head on my arms as I sing.
My voice is like a breeze and the reeds whistle on my words. I sway slightly as I reach out my finger to his nose. I don’t touch it, but my sparkles do. They cover the tip like dust that disappears.
As I sing, I sit up and close my eyes. I hold my long, soft green hair and sway more as my song fills his room. I turn to his face. My face fills with adoration for him and I do. I adore him so much.
His room fills with my light and my music. I put all the love of my forest into it and hope it calms his dreams.
I fix my light green dressings as I slowly move to the song that fills my heart.
I wave my hand across the air slowly above me and a blanket of sparkles coats him. I see a small smile pull at his lips. I return his smile as I rest my head on the edge of the bed. My fingers float around his face. I use my powers to move his hair out of his eyes.
I just wish I could touch him. Just once. I’ve watched him for so long. I’ve gotten so close to him. I just want a tiny touch.
I reach out the tip of my finger to his nose. I swallow as I close the gap.
Just before the skin of my finger touched him, a blue, tiny lightning bolt shocked me. I yelped and pulled my hand back. Wes shoots up, wide awake and looking around wildly.
“Oh no!” I disappear and reappear in the woods.
I raise my finger to my eyes. “What was that?” I look to Falcon Ridge with wonderment on my face.
Whatever it was, it pierced the veil. He felt it too. I could see it in his eyes. It’s odd. What kind of magic could pierce my veil like that?
I look up to the moon and its pale blue color. I can’t worry about that now. I need to find my tree.
****
I searched for a day and night.
As the world turns a deep blue, I find my grand Oak tree. Older than time itself. It was given to me at the time of my birth. We all got something. This tree is mine. He’s old, wise and sensitive.
I stand at his roots. My face humbled and my hands clasped at my thighs.
“Please don’t be mad. I know I’ve been gone a long time.” I raise my head to his tall top covered in thick branches and leaves.
The night air rustled his leaves. The blue light of the moon makes the tree shine.
“What I’m doing is important. He’s in my charge. I promise, I’m not abandoning you. As long as I keep up with moon cycles, everything will be fine.” I walk to his trunk and wrap my arms around what I can reach.
“Please understand. He needs me too.” I whisper.
I look up and I see the blue light fill the treetop. It runs through the veins of the leaves to the branches. Down the branches through the thick veins in the bark.
The light gathers around me and I see my skin start to glow.
“Thank you.” I breathe. I close my eyes as the power is absorbed. The light surrounds me and pulses with my heart beat. It matches the heart beat of my great oak.
I feel myself recharge and I think of Wes. I feel him inside me.
I hug my tree more and absorb the last of the power. I open my eyes and watch the blue light travel back up to the leaves. The light flashes in their veins then dies down. My eyes glow blue, then turn back to green.
I feel content now. I’ll ground myself for five more days, center my power and then go back to Wes.
“Thea!”
The sound of my name barked had me yelp and spin around. I pin myself to the trunk and my eyes go wide.
My skin shivers and I swallow.
“Nala.” I whisper.
