Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Claire’s POV
“Can I talk to you for a moment?” he asked, his face haggard, like he hadn’t slept in days.
Then I excused myself from Jackson, who was still staring at me intently. I grabbed Lucas’s hand and led him to a corner in the hospital. With arms crossed, I asked, “What do you want from me? Did you sign the divorce papers?” He shook his head slowly, a flicker of regret crossing his face. “No, I can’t.”
“Then why are you here?” I asked, my voice as cold as the Canadian winter.
“Because I’m worried,” he said. “You never answered my calls or texts, and there’s been no news from you. You had me going crazy!”
“There’s no need for you to worry about me anymore, Lucas. We’re over. Why can’t you understand that?” I asked softly, but my words seemed to have no effect.
He began pleading, “Claire, please, just give me a second chance. I’ll treat you better this time. I’ll do everything to make you happy, absolutely everything, I promise! Just give me a second chance to prove it to you!”
I shook my head. “There’s no point, Lucas…”
He gripped my hand tightly, his eyes searching mine. “Claire, I know I messed up. I know that. But why won’t you give
me a second chance?”
I pushed his hand away, my voice thick with emotion. “The divorce is happening, and there’s nothing you can do about it, Lucas.” As I turned to leave, he followed close behind like a lost puppy.
“Claire, I rented a house nearby so I can see you-”
I stopped and looked back at him, frustration lacing my voice. “Lucas, why can’t you understand?!”
He sighed, a heavy weight settling on his shoulders. “Because I can’t let you go.”
I froze in place while staring at him. I couldn’t understand why he was trying to stop the divorce. In fact, he should be happy because he now had the chance to be with his mistress.
“You need to think about the divorce, Lucas. It’s a serious matter, and you can’t ask me to stop it. I can’t stay in this relationship anymore and I hope… you would respect my choice.
But he started pleading again, his voice growing louder and echoing in the hallway. Everyone in the hospital could hear him, creating a scene.
I scoffed in disbelief. Why did he have no shame anymore? I stepped back and shook my head. “Don’t do this, Lucas! Or I will call security!”
“No, I won’t stop pleading until you give me a second chance! I’m still your husband. Let’s fix this. We can still be a happy family. That’s what you want, right?” he asked, his voice desperate now.
“Lucas! Don’t cause a scene!” I urged him.
Everyone started to notice, even Marisa, my colleague. She looked confused and gestured for me to call security. I bit my lower lip and shook my head. Maybe it would only worsen the situation.
“Lucas, stop it,” I pleaded.
He keeled all of a sudden, “Please, please, please! I can’t let go… Don’t leave me.”
I tried to help him get up, but he was stubborn and wouldn’t let go of me.
“You’re only embarrassing yourself, Lucas.”
He shook his head, tears welling up in his eyes. “I don’t care.”
Anger flared in my chest. He wasn’t taking a hint. To shatter his delusions, I said the harsh truth, “Lucas… I don’t love you anymore, ok?!”
He stood up, shock written on his face as he stared at me. “What? What did you just say?” I looked up and met his eyes, “I don‘ t love you anymore.”
