After the darkest night, still comes the dawn.
Written in 2016, and edited in 2020, Apostasy in now completed. The alternate endings are here, but Brenda’s ending had a purpose. There were so many times she just wanted to die and take her abuser with her. But she survived and he went to jail. The saddest part was her young son grew up to be just like his father and died in prison despite all her attempts to save him. She went on to become a counselor and victim rescuer. She was the kindest, toughest, and most heroic woman I have ever known. Risking her life to save people she barely knew in places where she could have been killed.
She knew I was going to write a survivor ending with her fantasy about his imprisonment and was okay with it, but sadly she passed away from cancer only a week before we published the last chapters.
I included Joel and Anulla being in love and happy, because J loved Bren from the moment she served him a cup of coffee to the moment a drunk driver took him from her. She always said he loved her enough in those five years to last a lifetime.
It has been my honor to put this story to print. It broke my heart and made me stronger. I hope that it touched you.
Abuse and grief are survivable.
