The first thought that raced through her was to wonder where Zane had had his gun hidden, she hadn’t seen it’s outline on his dark grey suit. The next one was if someone was about to call the police. She let her eyes sweep over the restaurant. No one seemed to take notice of the eight men pointing weapons at each other. Zane had told Ava not to get up from her seat, so she stayed glued to it, gripping the glass in her hand tightly.
She did her best to become invisible. It wasn’t the first time Ava had been in a situation where a gun had been pointed at her. The first time had been during a night shift at the E.R. A drug addict had stormed inside and waved a gun around trying to get drugs.
The second time it had been a husband who had beaten his wife so badly she had to be rushed to the E.R. He had come after her to make sure she wasn’t going to talk.
Third, and last time had been the night before. All the previous times, Ava had been scared beyond belief. This time, she tried to make herself small. But the amount of fear was not as powerful as before. Had she finally become numb to violence? Had last night caused her to put all fear to the side or was she still in shock?
“Put your guns down,” Zane growled at Victor and his men. Victor made a jerky nod with his head, and they all put their guns away. Zane and Jax also put theirs away and sat down at the table again. They must have stood up as they drew their guns, Ava thought. Ryder and Tom still had their guns out, but they lowered them. “Have a nice evening, Victor, and give my best to your boss,” Zane said, dismissing the four men for the second time.
“The same to you, Mr Velky,” Victor said. It only took them minutes to exit the restaurant. When they did, Ryder and Tom put away their guns and Ava felt herself relax. Jax moved to a seat opposite her and Zane. He had a smile on his face. A waitress appeared at the table. Jax ordered a steak, medium, without having been offered a menu.
“I’ll have the Steak au Poivre and the lady will have the seared lamb,” Zane said. He hadn’t looked at a menu either or asked Ava what she would like. Ava thought she should be upset about it, or at least object and ask to see a menu. But lamb sounded fantastic, and she didn’t want to make a scene. Zane and Jax talked in low voices about the deal and their theories about why Mr Johnson wanted to open a new business in parts of the town that they controlled.
“Was it your idea, Ava, with the fentanyl?” Jax suddenly asked. Ava tensed up at being dragged into the conversation, but Zane kept circling her shoulder with his thumb. She took it as a sign that he didn’t mind her joining in.
“Yes, we have had a lot of deaths in the E.R due to it,” she nodded.
“You’re a doctor?” he asked, sounding surprised.
“A nurse,” she corrected him.
“That’s impressive,” the blond man smiled. Ava saw Ryder and Tom had relaxed and taken a seat at a table near them. Even though they were sitting down, their eyes kept checking the restaurant.

The food arrived, and Ava was almost drooling over her plate. It smelled amazing and looked beautiful. Ava ha 02:30 eaten in a restaurant like this before. She took her time to savour every blte. As they had finished their main courses, Zane again leaned into Ava.
“Do you want dessert? They have some chocolate and cherry cake that is famous,” he told her. Ava imagined the cake would be amazing, judging by the food. It sounded wonderful. But then Ava could hear her aunt telling her she needed to watch what she ate. Men only like thin and attractive women, she’d told Ava. Ava had indulged enough for today. First a hamburger and now a full meal.
“No thank you,” she whispered back. What if Zane lost the strange Interest he had in her. What if he ignored her without dismissing her, she would be all alone in that mansion while he paraded women to his bedroom. She didn’t think she could handle the humiliation. Zane frowned and looked at her but nodded. He paid the bill and held Ava’s chair for her to get up. Ava felt slightly more comfortable in her dress. The constant worry that the string in the back would come undone had stopped. What took longer to get used to was the feeling of Zane’s hand on her naked back as he guided her out of the restaurant. She should fear his touch, she should at least feel uncomfortable about it. But if Ava was honest, she liked it. Or at least, it made her body react in a way which was new to her. Ava didn’t know what to do with that, so she put it to the side. Together with all the other things that she needed to think about when she had some time alone. They arrived at the club just as it was opening and letting the first people inside. For the first time, Ava got to see it from the front. The facade was bright white with dark wooden details. There were no windows, but a large neon sign said ‘Zenit’. Despite it being early, the line of people outside was long. They all stared as the black SUV stopped in front of the entrance. Ava could see them stare at Zane as he got out, especially the women. The thought of being the centre of their attention, just by being around Zane, made Ava’s skin crawl. But as Zane stretched out his hand to her, she took it and tried to make a gracious exit despite the short skirt. She could feel the eyes that followed the two of them as they made their way into the club. The doormen stepped aside and let them in with a quick nod to Zane and Jax, who had materialised at Zane’s side. Zane escorted her to one end of the bar and helped her up on one of the stools.
“Wait here for me,” he told her and gestured at a bartender. As Zane walked away, the bartender came up to Ava.
“What can I get you?” she asked with a friendly smile. Ava had no idea what to order. She rarely drank alcohol. When she did, it was usually wine or beer. But that didn’t seem like the thing to order here.
“What do you recommend?” Ava asked. The bartender looked at her for a moment.
“I have something I think you might like. It’s not on the cocktail list yet,” she then said.
“Sounds exciting. I would love to try it,” Ava smiled. A couple of minutes later, the bartender put down a martini glass with a bright yellow liquid in it, topped by a slice of passion fruit. Ava took a sip and was pleasantly surprised at the hint of sourness, the tropical flavour and the bubbles that danced on her tongue. “This is superb. What is it?” Ava asked.
“Thank you. It doesn’t have a name yet. It’s passion fruit, vodka and champagne,” the bartender told her.
“Thank you for making it for me. You are talented.”
“It was my pleasure. If you need another one, or anything else, just let me know. I’m Veronica,” the bartender smiled.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Ava. I’ll let you get back to work,” Ava said. Veronica went back to serve the customers, and Ava 02 Pelt a little out of place. She turned around and watched the dance floors and booths where people sat and tried to have conversations despite the loud music. It wasn’t as busy as it had been the previous night, but as it was a Saturday, Ava thought it would change as the evening turned into night. Ava saw Zane and Jax talking to a man on the other side of the bar. She also saw the women that gathered nearby them, waiting for a lull in the conversation between the three men to make their move. Ava looked away. She knew she had no right to Zane. Ava didn’t want to have it either; she reminded herself. That didn’t mean she needed to watch when women threw themselves at him. She started looking at the people flowing into the club instead. She found it mesmerising to watch the dance floor with the growing amount of people that moved their bodies to the music.
Ave had almost finished her drink when a man walked up to the bar and stood beside her. He was good–looking, but not in the same league as lax and definitely not Zane. He ordered something from Veronica and then he turned toward Ava.
Hello, he said. He needed to lean in a little to be heard over the music.
Hi,” she said, gave him a smile and then turned her attention away from him. Hoping he would take the hint. He didn’t.
“I don’t think I have seen you here before,” he told her as he grabbed his beer. Ava shrugged. “I know it sounds like a pickup line, but I would definitely have noticed you. You are beautiful,” he told her.
Thank you,” Ava said without looking at him.
Do you want to dance?” he asked, holding out his hand.
“No, thank you. I’m here with someone.”
“Your husband or boyfriend?”
“No.” Ava shook her head and the soft curls bounced all around her.
“Well, then it’s okay to have a little fun with me,” he said, letting his eyes sweep over her body. Ava saw him linger at her breasts and legs.
“I’m sorry, I’m not interested,” Ava insisted. The man placed a hand on Ava’s naked knee.
“I can make you Interested,” he told her. Ava tensed up. She hated the way he looked at her and she detested the feel of his skin against hers. It was nothing like how Zane’s hand felt against her.
“I’m not interested,” she persisted and moved her leg to get away from his touch.
“Miss A, are you okay?” Ava looked behind the man and saw Ryder standing there with a look that would have terrified Ava if she wasn’t relatively certain he was there for her protection.

“No, my bodyguard,” Ava said and watched as the man’s expression went from cocky to worried. “I’m fine Ryder, but this gentleman seems to not be taking no for an answer,” she then told Ryder. Ryder raised an eyebrow, and the man raised both his hands before quickly walking away from the bar. “Thank you.” Ava smiled at Ryder.
