He left the room and walked back to his own, calling down to Anna to make sure she brought some new clothes and
makeup when she woke Ava in the morning.
Ava was awakened by a light knock on the door. She was confused for a moment; she didn’t recognise the sheets, or the bed, or the room. Last night came back to her as a freight train mercilessly ploughing through her sleepy mind. There was a second knock on the door. Ava sat up and called for them to enter, making sure the cover was up around her waist. She had been sleeping in her tank top and panties since she didn’t have any of her nightclothes. The older woman from the night before walked into the room with a smile on her face.
“Good morning, miss Ava,” she said.
“Good morning, Anna,” Ava replied. At least she thought that was the woman’s name. The smile she got back had her thinking she had been right.
“I have some new clothes with me and some make–up,” Anna told her and put the bundle she had in her arm on the
dresser.

“Thank you,” Ava said.
“Not at all. Let me have a look,” Anna said, walking up to Ava and turning her head to look at Ava’s cheek. Anna made a tutting noise. “Barbarians, laying hands on a woman. Master Velky will have made them pay for this,” she said. “You take a shower and get ready. Breakfast is served in an hour, and the master would like you to join him.”
“Okay.” Ava nodded. She didn’t know what else to say. Ava remained in bed until Anna had left the room. Anna seemed like a good person. Maybe she had been forced to work for the Velky family, just like Ava. But Ava still wasn’t comfortable enough to relax around anyone in this house yet. When she was alone, she quickly got up and hurried over to the door. She had been too tired and dazed last night, but now she saw the lock on the door and with a sigh of relief, she locked it. The bathroom was ridiculously big and had a shower and a bathtub standing on gilded feet. The double sink took up almost an entire wall with a big mirror that clearly let Ava see the state of her face. Her right cheek was still swollen, and a bright red bruise had appeared. Her lip wasn’t as swollen as it had been last night, but it was still sore. Ava sighed and undressed to take a shower. She felt vulnerable and wondered if she should look for cameras. But then she realised the thing that waited for her when Zane decided to enforce the contract would be far more intimate than what he could see on a hidden camera. This was her life now, and she just had to deal with it. She stood under the hot water spray and put together a list of things she needed to do. Top of the list was trying to find out what had happened to her phone and if her uncle and aunt were okay. She wished she could hide in the shower all day. That way, she didn’t have to face her new reality. But she suspected if she did, Zane would come and get her. She sighed and stepped out of the shower and dried off. As she let her long hair dry, she brushed her teeth and looked at the make–up Anna had brought her. Ava did her best to cover up her bruised cheek and hide the traces of not getting enough sleep. She was quite satisfied with the result when she was done. Ava looked at the clothes that had been provided to her. It was a pair of plain jeans and a pink shirt. There were plain cotton panties and a bra that wouldn’t fit her. Ava didn’t care; she could use her own bra. As she got dressed, she noticed the shirt was a little too small. It fit, but there were some gaps between the buttons. She looked in the mirror, and saw it wasn’t that noticeable. She looked at the sweater from last night. Ava could use it, but she would rather not. Everything she associated with last night felt tainted. When she was done, she decided she would head downstairs. Ava didn’t know what time it was, as she didn’t have her phone or a clock. Walking down the stairs, she tried

to remember the way to the kitchen. She took a left at the bottom of the stairs, and she felt good about her decision when she felt the enticing smell of a cooked breakfast.
“Angel.” The call came from her right, and Ava turned her head to see Zane sitting at a large dining table, alone. Right,
in a house like this you didn’t wat in the kitchen, she thought.

“Good morning,” she said, feeling oddly shy as she walked into the dining room.
“Good morning, did you get any sleep?” he asked as he stood and held out the chair next to his. A little taken aback and confused, this was not what she had been expecting. Ava sat down.
“Yes, thank you,” she said. Then she wondered what she had been expecting. That Zane would jump her like a sex–crazed pervert? Did she expect him to be rude and cruel? Nothing she had seen from him up to that point had showed anything like that. When she snapped back to reality, Zane seemed to study her. Ava’s mind seemed to stop working. She had no idea what to say or how to get the conversation started. Instead, she sat there, staring at her empty plate, wishing the food to arrive so she at least could distract herself by eating. Suddenly, she felt starving. She couldn’t remember when she had eaten last.
“I have a couple of meetings today that I won’t be needing you for. But I need to be at the club tonight, and I expect you to be ready to go with me by six,” Zane told her.
“Okay,” she said. “I need to go back home,” she then added.
“Why?” he asked.
“I need my phone. I think it’s at home. And I need to pack some clothes and things. And I need to make sure my uncle and aunt are okay,” she told him. He frowned again.
“Why would you care after they put you in this situation?” he asked. Ava would say he looked to be in a bad mood. But she didn’t know him well enough to make that judgement.
“They are my only family,” she said quietly.
“Is blood that important to you?” Ava shrugged. She didn’t expect him to understand.
“I can be the bigger person,” she said. He shook his head. Anna came walking in with a young woman. They were carrying plates of food that they put down on the table. Anna returned with coffee that she poured in a cup for Zane.
“Miss Ava, is coffee okay, or do you prefer tea?” Anna asked.
“Coffee is fine, thank you, Anna.” Ava smiled.
“Sugar, milk?”

“Both, thank you.” Zane made a huffing noise as Ava added the sugar and milk to her coffee. She looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t tell me you are one of those people who like things like vanilla latte or some other monstrosity that passes for coffee,” he said in a condescending voice.
“I do, as a matter of fact,” Ava said, feeling a blush creeping onto her cheeks. “I can drink it black. I usually do when I work. But I prefer to add something to it,” she confessed. Zane just shook his head and started eating. They ate in silence. Ava was far too busy enjoying the food to worry about the lack of conversation. It was a rare treat for her to sit down and eat something someone else had made if she didn’t go out to eat. And she barely ever did that. She reminded herself not to eat too much, especially in front of Zane.
“I will send someone by your house and pick up your phone and whatever else you need,” Zane suddenly said.
“You don’t need to do that. I can just grab a cab,” Ava said. The look Zane gave her told her he wasn’t asking. “Thank you, I will make a list,” she told him. He nodded. He then placed a white card on the table next to her plate. Ava looked at it, then she looked at Zane.
“You need to go shopping. You need better clothes if you are to be seen with me,” he told her.
“Better clothes?” she asked, feeling herself blush.
“Yes, less like a middle–aged mom and more like a sexy twenty–year–old,” he said, letting his gaze travel over her. Ava felt embarrassed. It wasn’t like she didn’t have nice clothes. She just didn’t use them when on her way to or from work. And maybe they weren’t that revealing, but she wasn’t comfortable with that kind of thing. “I have added your name to the card. You can use it for what you need. Hair, nails, whatever you women do,” he said dismissively. They sat in silence for a while. Ava had lost her appetite and just wanted to go hide. Zane was reading something on his phone.
“What should I say when people ask me why I’m here?” Ava finally asked.
Zane looked up at her.
“Say whatever you want,” he told Ava.
“Obviously I can’t say I’m your girlfriend. How about I tell them you hired me as a private nurse?” she pondered.
“Why is it fucking obvious you can’t be my girlfriend?” he asked.

huffed and took a step towards Ava and Gabriel.
“Easy there, big boy. You don’t have to worry about Ava’s virtue when it comes to me. If I start pawing at you, well then you have a reason to be worried,” Gabriel said, and the last part came out as a purr. Ava felt like giggling as she saw the big man look at Gabriel with big eyes and then turn a shade of pink.
“Don’t tease the boys,” Ava told her friend.
“Why not? He looks like a yummy treat,” Gabriel said, looking back at Ryder. “Ava, since when do you have bodyguards and money to shop in this place?” he then asked, looking at the boutique they were standing outside.
