Chapter 27 Would You Like to Drink It Yourself, or Should I Feed You
"Mmm..." Christopher heard faint moaning sounds next to him. Sleeping beside him was Diane, and those sounds belonged to her.
He got up and eyed Diane carefully with a frown. Her face was so pale that it was almost translucent; as she curled herself into a ball, she seemed to be suffering intense pain with her eyes tightly shut. "What's the matter?" he asked while putting his large hand on her shoulder, but the small size of it caused the furrows in his brow to deepen. Before she could answer him, he asked again, "What's wrong with you? What is ailing you?"
Diane had her back to Christopher at first, and it wasn't until she heard him asking her twice in a row that she opened her eyes and answered feebly, "I'm fine. It's not a big deal."
"How could you say that it's not something serious when you're in so much pain?" Does this woman have any sense of self-preservation at all? Is she not going to call it a big deal until she dies from the pain? thought Christopher to himself. He threw back the covers annoyedly, got out of bed, and stretched out his hands.
When she realized that he was going to pick her up, Diane hastily stopped him. "No, you don't have to do that. I'm really fine. I... I'm just menstruating." She felt somewhat embarrassed to tell a man this kind of thing.
Christopher's outstretched hands froze for a moment, and so did his face. After being stunned for a while, he replied, "That won't do either. If you're not going to the hospital, I'll have Erin come over." Diane had no idea who Erin was, but she could only let Christopher do as he pleased. At the moment, she was trembling all over with pain-she was in no mood to say anything.
Meanwhile, Christopher put his words into action and picked up his cell phone from the bedside table before he made a call. He sat on the edge of the bed after that, feeling helpless as he stared at the lady who had curled herself up into a ball. However, he grew impatient after looking at her for less than five minutes, so he picked up his phone and pestered Erin to hurry up. He then repeated the process of putting down the phone, taking a look at Diane, and picking up the phone again. By the time Erin arrived, he had made at least five phone calls to hurry her up.
Erin was Christopher's family doctor. Despite her young age, she was a specialist who had returned from overseas. Since Christopher didn't like going to the hospital, he specially hired her so that he could see a doctor at home whenever he fell ill with minor ailments.
Since she had received five phone calls from Christopher on the way to his house, Erin thought that the sky was going to fall down. As soon as she entered the house, she asked anxiously, "What happened, Mr. Wayne? What's the matter with you?"
Christopher darted a look at the bed with deep furrows in his brow. "It's her."
Erin shifted her gaze to the bed in a surprised manner. Finally, she discovered a dainty woman huddling up in the large bed in the bedroom.
"She's got a tummy ache. Could you see if there's any way to relieve her pain?" asked Christopher.
Erin nodded repeatedly. "Uh, sure, Mr. Wayne. Would you like to leave the room first?" She spoke first without thinking much of it, for she feared that it would be bad for a man to be present while she was examining Diane. After all, she had no idea what was wrong with her.
Christopher took a look at Diane. Then, he turned around and left without any objection. He paced back and forth a few rounds outside the door before Erin finally came out. "How is she?"
Erin was startled for a moment by the anxiousness in Christopher's voice. She had been his doctor for quite some time, but she had never seen him in such a state of agitation. "Her problem is nothing serious, but she needs a good deal of nourishment. This lady recently had a miscarriage, and she hasn't recovered fully from it. This is probably related to the severe pain she's suffering from." She learned of these experiences from Diane herself while examining her. On the other hand, Christopher's face darkened when he heard the word 'miscarriage'. After a moment of silence, he then asked, "How should she be nourished?"
"It'll be best if she can drink some sort of herbal concoction-I will have them prepared and sent over soon. For the time being, you may give her some painkillers if her pain is severe; I happen to have some in my medical kit. Brewing some brown sugar ginger tea is also good for relieving the pain. It's normal for women to suffer this kind of pain, but in most cases, these pains can't be treated properly, so it takes time for the patient to recover."
Christopher nodded. After asking a few more questions, he instructed Erin to bring the medicine and told the housemaid to prepare some brown sugar ginger tea.
By the time he finished busying himself, Erin had already left the house. When the housemaid brought the brown sugar ginger tea upstairs, he took it from her. "You may go downstairs."
On the other hand, Diane sat up when she saw Christopher coming in. After she had taken some painkillers, she felt less uncomfortable than before.
"Drink this." Christopher came up to Diane and held out the mug in front of her.
Naturally, Diane didn't know what he had brought for her. After taking the mug from him, she lowered her head and took a look at the mug's contents. She frowned and said, "There's ginger in this." "It's brown sugar ginger tea. Erin said you should drink this." Christopher's tone was as cold and forbidding as his figure looked while he stood beside the bed. He had never looked after anyone before, especially women. It was kind enough for him to bring this tea in and hand it to her right now, yet she responded to this with a look of disgust. "Hurry up and drink it. The tea will be less effective if it's cool," he urged.
As she held the piping hot mug in both hands, Diane looked up at him. "I don't eat ginger, and I can't stand this taste."
Christopher was rendered speechless by this as he threw her an angry glance. After staring at her for a long time as if she was an alien, he suddenly sat down and snatched the mug away from her hands. Before Diane could figure out what he was trying to do, she saw him holding up the mug of tea and promptly drinking a large mouthful of it. "That's " Before she could say that the tea was for period pains, Christopher had already put down the mug. Instantly, he raised his hand, grabbed the back of her head, and turned her face toward him. "Mmm..." Her eyes widened when his lips pressed against hers. Her tender lips parted slightly, to which he responded by forcing the sweet liquid into her mouth. As she choked, she began to cough when he let go of her.
"Would you like me to drink it yourself, or should I feed you?"
"I... I'll drink it myself."
Diane was terrified that he'd do it again, so she didn't even dare to procrastinate a second. As she stared at him fearfully, she took the mug and obediently drank the tea. While she drank the tea and put up with the taste of ginger that she hated, she kept staring at Christopher. Her eyes were wide open with a look as timid as that of a chicken-hearted kid.
Feeling both annoyed and amused, Christopher glared at her for a while before he rebuked, "What a pain you are. Hurry up and finish it before you have a good rest. I'll help you get leave from Mr. Waddington I need to go to the company and have no time to look after you, though. Don't act spoiled in front of me since it's useless."
Diane was rendered speechless. When did I act spoiled in front of you? I just want you to leave as soon as possible, okay? she thought to herself. However, she didn't want to be greeted with more of Christopher's remarks, so she merely nodded without complaining about his complacency to his face. "I got it. Just go."
Thus, Christopher turned around and left with the same chilly and impatient look in his eyes. As she held the ginger tea in her hands, Diane tasted a pleasant sweetness on her tongue. She took another sip of the tea, held it in her mouth, looked at the door, and watched as he left.
This time, Diane was tormented by period pains for two days; it wasn't until the third day that the pain was alleviated to the point where she didn't need to take painkillers. She did not go to work for two days, but Christopher returned home for the first time during those two days. Not only that, he even returned home quite early at around mid-afternoon.
Since they had more opportunities to see each other, they naturally came into more contact. As that happened, Diane accidentally learned some matters that she shouldn't have known.
That day, Christopher went to take a shower first after dinner. Since Diane was bored stiff, she searched for a Korean drama and watched it on her tablet, during which she heard his cell phone ringing on the bedside table.
Even though Diane had no intention of peeping into someone else's privacy, she instinctively picked the phone up and took a look at it. However, that look was all it took to freeze her blood.
