Chapter 45
Knox
“I have a feeling we would have been better off staying mad at each other.” Cameron sighed as we watched our mate storm off.
“She’ll be alright, she’s just being stubborn.” I said.
“That she certainly is.” Cameron chuckled.
“Honestly, though, she’s right about one thing. We never really talked. I just want to make sure we’re on the same page.” I said to Cam.
“Don’t start getting all mushy on me now, werewolf.” Cameron smirked,
“We had a good thing going.”
“My wolf, Alistair, he can sense that you’re Navy’s mate. He’s the reason I was able to calm down.” I explained.
“I grew up with the idea of sharing my mate, so it’s nothing new for me. Sure, I didn’t think I’d be sharing her with a werewolf, but it happens.” Cameron shrugged.
“So, we’re good then?”
“Yeah, we’re good.” He agreed.
“You shouldn’t be living outside the pack territory in a run down motel. Come stay here. You can have any house you want or you can stay in the packhouse.” I offered.
“I don’t know…” Cameron paused.
“I know it’ll make Navy happy to have you here, and it’ll make it easier for us all to work through everything. We do have a new dynamic to figure out.” I chuckled.
“You make a good point. Navy says that she lives with you.” Cameron said.
“She does. It’s unorthodox, but you could stay in the Luna quarters for now. It’s right across from our quarters so we would all be close.” I suggested.
“I’ll want to check with Navy first, to make sure it’s okay with her.” Cameron said.
“Of course.” I agreed.
“You think she’ll come around?” I asked, voicing my deepest fear.
“I know she will. She’s always been like this. She overthinks everything and is stubborn as hell. It needs to be her idea, she can’t be talked into anything.” Cameron chuckled.
He did have an advantage over me, he’s known Navy the longest. Then again, in the time I’ve spent with her she’s probably been the most raw and unguarded she’s ever been. We’ve both seen different sides of our mate and I think that’s one of the reasons our bond will end up being so strong.
“I know, that’s why I try to make sure everything is her choice. She always gets a say.” I said.
“I noticed. I’m sorry that I accused you of being controlling. What I said when I first came here wasn’t fair, I didn’t even know you or anything about your situation with Navy.” Cameron sighed.
“It’s alright, man. I hated you, too. You were just some guy trying to steal my mate. It’s all good, we have the same goals now.” I said, clapping Cameron on the back.
“I just want Navy to be happy and loved. I know that you’re capable of doing that for her. If I thought for one second that me being here wasn’t best, I would leave.” Cameron admitted.
“You have her best interests in mind, I can see that. We just have to wait for her to see that this will all work out just fine. We’ll have to take it easy with our little mate.” I said, growing warm as I thought about my love.
“She’s little to you, not to me.” Cameron laughed. He was only half a foot or so taller than Navy.
“Are all sirens so short?” I asked.
“Pretty much.”
“Maybe we should do a schedule or something?” I said thoughtfully.
“A schedule?”
“Yeah, you know, like organizing our time with her so we don’t overwhelm her. I think us together is what’s upsetting her.” I shrugged.
“Oh yeah, she’s going to love that.” Cameron snorted.
“Obviously we don’t act like it’s a schedule. I work during the day, anyway. Usually Navy is alone or with the girls. You could spend that time with her then she can be with me in the evenings and overnight. At least for now.” I said.
“That’s not a bad plan. Then, we go do stuff together over the weekends.” Cameron added.
“You know what the weekend is?” I raised an eyebrow at him, thinking back to when Navy first came here and didn’t know the days of the week.
“Uhm, yeah?” He looked at me weirdly and then started laughing,
“Navy acted like she didn’t know what the week and weekend days were, didn’t she?”
“Yes.” I said.
“She was screwing with you. We have that in our realm, too. We just don’t have a sense of time, really, other than night and day.” Cameron was still laughing at me.
“She never said anything, she really had me going.” I grumbled.
“She’s trickier than she looks.” Cameron smirked.
“I’m noticing that. A cheekier side has started to come out in her the more comfortable she is around here.”
“Oh yeah, Navy is a huge jokester. Mostly she’s just really sarcastic and cynical. I was always more into the practical jokes.” Cameron said.
“I’m not much of a joke guy.” I mumbled.
“No kidding.” Cameron laughed.
“She’s wiggling a softer side out of me.” I said defensively,
“Come on, I’ll give you a tour of the packhouse while we wait for our mate.” I changed the subject, standing up from the table and motioning for Cameron to follow me.
I showed Cameron around the packhouse and he spoke kindly with some of the members. Most of them had already heard the rumors about Navy having another mate, curdsey of my parents and Meredith. They were curious about him, skeptical of his presence. I made sure to introduce him as our friend and he was great at socializing.
Eventually, we made it to the top floor. I was careful to avoid Navy’s scent everywhere we went. When we sensed that she was close to us, we moved on. We wanted to give her the space that she needed. I showed Cameron our room first and then took him over to the Luna’s quarters.
“I’m pretty confident that you’re the first mate of the Luna to live here.” I laughed as we walked through the apartment.
“I’d imagine so.” Cameron said, looking around.
“Navy lived here for a while?” He asked.
“She did. Can I ask you something about the mate bond?” I asked.
“Sure.” Cameron shrugged.
“How do siren’s sense their mates? Navy said that she could smell me but I’ve been watching you, you never act like you can smell her.” I said.
“She can smell you? Hm, that’s not normal for sirens. Must be because you’re a werewolf. Sirens hear a song.” Cameron said thoughtfully.
“Navy did tell me about the mating call. She sang me my song one of the first days we met.” I said.
“So, for sirens, we don’t actually have to sing to hear each other. Did she tell you that only female sirens sing?” He asked and I nodded.
“Yeah, so I don’t have a call, but it’s like a silent one comes from me and Navy can hear it. Same for her. Whenever she’s close, her song gets louder.” He explained.
“That’s the same for me and her scent. That’s how I always know where she is.” I said.
“I guess the species aren’t that different.” Cameron shrugged.
“I guess not.”
We both stood in the apartment in silence, thinking about how we were all so different yet the same. Here I was, a werewolf, in a mate bond with not one, but two sirens who I thought were myth up until a few months ago. It was crazy how life turned out sometimes.
