Chapter Chapter Twenty Nine
We finally arrived back to the antique shop. Luckily for us, no one was coming after us. Joe stopped the van in front of the shop and turned around to look at everyone.
“Okay, I’m gonna get rid of the Van, they’re probably looking for it as we speak. Sam, Krista get Linda. Ben and Kyle, you guys get Noah. Dave will take a look at them.” He explained to us.
Once we got the wounded up Linda and Noah out of the van, the three of us made our way to the door, which swung open revealing Dave, a shocked expression on his face. He looked around the streets before motioning for us to get inside. Locking the door behind us, we all made our way downstairs.
On the floor there were two mattresses, one each side of the wall.
“Lay them down, I’m gonna check on Noah first.” Dave said as Kyle and Ben set him down on the mattress.
Krista and I did the same with Linda on the other side of the room.
“I have to get the bullets out, if there isn’t an exit wound.” He said as he looked on the other side of Noah’s leg. No exit wound. We were all standing around watching when Dave looked up at me and Krista.
“You girls know how to clean cuts?” He asked. I shook my head No and Krista yes. “You two take care of Linda, the boys and I got Noah, okay?” He said looking between the two of us.
We nodded yes as Krista grabbed my arm, she picked up the first aid kit from the table and the two of us made our way over to Linda.
Krista then proceeded to clean the cuts on Linda’s face. She grabbed an ice pack and handed it to me.
“Just place it over the swelling on her eye.” She explained to me. I gave her a nod and did what she said. A second later a scream erupted in the room. My head snapped over to the direction. It was Noah. Dave had one of his hands digging inside his leg, trying his best to get the bullet out.
“Hold him down!” He barked out at the other two as Kyle held down his shoulders and Ben held down his legs. I could see the way Noah was struggling, his arms and legs kicking around to break free, the painful screams from the pressure in his leg. I blinked a few times and quickly wiped a tear with my free hand.
“Sam, he’s gonna be okay. Just focus on Linda right now.”
I sniffled and gave a nod. The door swung open, revealing a distressed Joe.
“You have to hurry up. Now!” He yelled out.
Joe lead us out to another car, it was a moving truck. I swear I don’t know how or when this man is able to do what he does in such a short amount of time. While I sat up front in the passengers seat, the others sat in the back. Dave taking care of Noah, and Krista with Linda. Before we got them out, Joe and I packed up everything in the truck, making sure to not leave anything behind. My guess now, is that we were being looked for. So we had to ditch whatever clothing we had and get new ones.
I have no idea how long we’ve been driving for, but it was getting late. I could see the sun setting in the horizon, the sky was a mixture of pink and orange. Joe made a sharp left turn into an abandoned road. I raised an eyebrow and looked at him.
“We’re going somewhere safe.” He explained.
“what’d you do with the Van?”
“I gave it to a friend of mine, to the junkyard. I made sure he took it apart and destroyed every piece. In return I got this truck.”
“Right, well what happened? Why the rush?”
“I was listening in on the radio. My friend stole it. They mentioned the attack at the White House, on the president and that they’re looking for a group in ski masks, janitor outfits and the Van we were in, which I ditched as quick as I could even before listening on the radio.”
“Makes sense.” I replied as I turned my attention out the window. We now ended up in the middle of the forest. I hadn’t realized how big the capital actually was, since it was closed off by walls.
“They’re not gonna find us in here? Wouldn’t this be the first place they looked?” I asked with a raised eyebrow as Joe continued to drive along the dirt road. We finally ended up in front of an abandoned house, something similar to what Noah took me too, when it was just the two of us. My thoughts were interrupted by a bang on the trucks wall.
“Hey Joe! Are we here yet??” Ben called out from the other side. Before Joe could answer, everything started shaking. I gripped onto my seat as I looked around wondering what the hell was happening. Suddenly the truck felt like it was being lowered into the ground.
I watched as the outside disappeared from us and we were under ground. It was completely pitch black, and I couldn’t see a thing. A second later, the area lit up and Joe drove off the platform we were on. I looked out the window to see a few people brushing on some dirt and leaves on top of the platform before it rose back up.
My gaze shifted to the front and I noticed the dirt walls, with cement ground. An older gentleman was waving at Joe, signaling him to continue moving. Right in front of us, there were metal double doors and they swung inwards.
I looked through the side view mirror and watched as the doors closed behind us. Glancing at the front once more, my eyes widened at the sight. It was the largest bunker I have ever seen. The floors were made of concrete along with the walls.
Up against both sides of the walls there were bunk beds for days. It looked like it fit hundreds of people, but there weren’t many people down here at the moment.
Joe was the first one to step out of the truck and I soon followed after.
A man of similar build to Joe, who had slicked back black hair and light brown eyes with fair skin walked up to him and shook his hand.
“Good to see you Joe.”
“You too Alec.” He replied. The man turned to me and gave me a warm welcoming smile.
“You must be Sam.” He said as he held his hand out for me to take. I gladly took it and shook his head.
“Joe's mentioned you, welcome to the rebellion.”
He gestured to the large room around us.
“Thanks, I was also with Jill and the others in our hometown.”
“Yes, he did mention that.”
“I didn’t know the rebellion was this big.” I looked around the room. There were some people here, looking at papers on tables, while others were relaxing on their beds.
“I’ll explain it more later. Now, let’s get Noah and Linda. I heard Noah’s badly hurt.”
“He was shot in the leg, no exit wound, Dave’s been working on him trying to get it out but he’s been losing too much blood.” Joe explained as the two of them made their way around to the back of the truck.
He opened the doors which revealed a passed out Noah. Kyle and Ben then carried him out and Dave followed behind them.
“I got one out,” he explained holding a bullet wound in front of us with his bloody hands.
“Get him to the medic section, I’ll have doctors work on getting the other bullet out. And Linda?” Alec asked as I helped Krista carry Linda out the truck.
“She’s in and out of consciousness.” Krista explained. Alec gave her a nod.
We all followed Alec towards the other side of the room. There were white curtains around beds. A few coughs echoed in the room.
A much older gentleman with graying hair and bright blue eyes in a doctors coat stepped out from one of the closed curtains and took his blue latex gloves off.
“Everyone this is Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, who practices general surgery.” Alec explained as Dr. Gordon gave us a smile and nod.
“He’s the only surgeon here?” Ben questioned and we all looked at him.
“There’s a few people here who help him out, nurses and whatnot, he’s the best we got in saving Noah though.”
One of the nurses walked over. “You can bring her over here.” She gestured to me and Krista as we followed her to an empty bed and set Linda down on it.
“Right this way.” Dr. Gordon spoke up as he gestured to one of the empty beds next to Linda. Kyle and Ben then carried Noah over to the bed and gently laid him down.
“Alright, why don’t you all wash up, change, this is gonna take a few hours.” Alec explained. He waved over to someone and I turned around to see an older woman, bright purple hair, with a nose piercing. She was wearing all black clothing and combat boots.
“Everyone this is Carla, she’ll show you to the washrooms. She’s also my second in command in this operation.”
“Cool.” Kyle spoke out loud and we all gave a chuckle.
“Alright follow me.” She said with a smile as Krista, Ben, Kyle and I followed after her. I turned around to see Dr. Gordon close the curtains around Noah. My gaze shifted to Dave, Joe and Alec who were in mid conversation. They all had a saddened look on their faces. Alec just nodded and they all gave each other a hug.
Henry. I thought to myself as I turned back around and followed the others through another metal door.
